[cite]Posted By: cafcdan18[/cite]May struggle to find another league club, does not look too good- being let go for lack of dedication.
Barnet are rock bottom of the league and if he's let go by them i can't see another league side wanting him. He'll probably end up at Welling or Dartford next season
I'm saddened and surprised by this . As well as our two games I reported on another thread that I saw Barnet against Accrington the day before we played Walsall.
In that game I felt Grant showed great commitment and leadership, he looked classy taking all of Barnet's left footed dead ball kicks . I told the bloke behind me that I was a Charlton fan and he said Grant had been dodgy at the start but was much improved since our matches in the Cup . After the Cup tie Parky said in League One / Two the key was consistancy . He said Grant had played against us as though it was a Cup final but questioned whether he could perform like that long term .Obviously his standards slipped again.
It's weird because I have played on a few golf days with him and he always seemed confident, relaxed and assured but in reality it seems he may have one or two inner demons!
For such a popular and decent Academy product to be released by us in the midst of a crisis in his particular position, followed by such a blunt release by a Football League basement club, suggests to me that there's off-the-pitch aspects weighing him down - looks like Grant's heart just isn't in the game.

McLeod was a very hard worker on the training ground, at least on Parky's watch anyway.
Just a dirty diving elbowing git who was hampered by that pesky paint allergy that caused him to lose his bearings whenever he got near those white painted lines of the penalty box... ;-)
I wonder what is going through Grant's mind ........ ?
He made his debut as a promising 18 year old in a Championship side chasing promotion, with expectations of a quick return to the Premiership.
Due to the injury situation, he kept his place at left back for several games, and whilst his inexperience showed at times, overall he did well enough. He was occasionally in and around the 1st team that season, even scored his first League goal.
Then came the upheaval with Pardew sacked, the team already on a downward spiral that was relegation bound.
He seemed comfortable enough in the Third Division - and then came that bad injury at Bristol Rovers when he was taken out in the 1st minute by that thug Blizzard.
That injury meant he missed the remainder of the season, and no chance to further establish himself in the 1st team with his contract up for renewal. Charlton then made him a much reduced contract offer, which Basey no doubt considered derisory. Other clubs showed interest; he went on a 3-week trial at Scottish Prem side Aberdeen and they offered him a contract - only to withdraw it as they couldn't move on other players to create the funds to pay for it. Or so they said.
He turned up back at The Valley, but too late; Parky had already covered the left back positions in the squad.
Gillingham let him train with them, but never seemed tempted to add him to the squad or perhaps they had already exhausted their player budget?
So he rocked up at Barnet, the basement club of the Football League, and immediately got injured.
Despite their good showing in the Cup against Charlton, they continued to struggle and the manager who signed him was sacked.
The new manager there has come in and scrutinised the squad, and no doubt had individual talks with each of his players.
Basey evidently hasn't come across well, and his attitude was questioned.
I can only conclude that 3 years ago Basey thought he had a decent chance of becoming a Prem player at Charlton.
And a year ago returning to the Championship with Charlton.
Or even a Scottish Prem future with Aberdeen last summer.
Barnet, looking odds on to be relegated to the Conference, just doesn't push his buttons.
Sounds to me like a very disappointed and disillusioned young man.
Here we go again, guys there is a old saying don/t believe everything you read,Grant only signed a short term contract with barnet to the end of january with a get out clause from janaury 3rd.Grant ,was offered a new 18 month contract on double his money, but he has had interest from higher division clubs which he feels he needs to explore, I think it a bit of sour grapes with barnet just because he has decided to explore other avenues.Nobody should ever doubt his detication he been upand down the northern line for 4 months from 7 in the morning to 5 at night.on wages most of you guys on here would/nt get out of bed for. Also in the 13 games he has played for them he has been their best player according to some barnet people i know.

I'm glad to read that.
He is definitely good enough for the football league and I wish him all the best even though he chose to ignore those of us clapping him off after the Barnet replay!

So, does this imply some 'economy with the truth' on the part of Paul Fairclough?
I know Paul very well from our Hertford and Stevenage days. He is an honest and fair man. Why would Barnet invent an excuse based on lack of dedication?
[cite]Posted By: Dave Rudd[/cite]Why would Barnet invent an excuse based on lack of dedication?
Just supposing ....... so apparently it now transpires that Barnet offered him 18 months on double his money after his temporary contract expired.
Maybe Grant thinks to himself, I should be able to do better than this - so says to his new manager, "Hang on, I just want to check out a few things first. I'll let you know shortly."
New manager says, "No, I only want players who'll die for the shirt even if we only pay peanuts.
I want you to sign right now or you're out the door."
So Grant walks away.
And in the heat of the moment, a frustrated manager gobs off to the media.
Perhaps.

Absolute tosh and I'd expect you to know better Liam. Parky intently disliked Mclown because of his poor attitude on and off the pitch. Millwall wanted to send him back to us because of his shockingly bad behaviour.
As soemone else said Barnet must be bad judges if they kept him and let go Basey.
Basey sadly also has himself to blame. He let one offer from a bigger club go to his head.

Not Fairclough's style. Barnet Chairman maybe. But even so, wouldn't the club just say "Basey has decided to explore other options"? Not denigrate him with (presumably) false accusations of lack of dedication etc?
i know grant very well.he tells me he only ever spoke to paul fairclough twice,The first time was on wednesday afternoon on when he asked grant for decision on the new contract offer.and asked him to let him know on thursday morning what his decison was, which grant duly did on the thursday morning explaining his reasons requarding the interest from higher division clubs which he wanted to explore,Fairclough then shook grant hand and wished him all the best.So yes he has been very economy with the truth.Has for him being a honest and fair, i let you decide.
In truth, the text doesn't read that badly. 'Lack of dedication' is not mentioned - and there is even a line which reads "That is not to criticise Grant."
There are mixed views at Barnet on this one. Personally, although I suspect we don't know the full story, I trust this is the right decision by our club. Basey has been our best defender (not hard)...going a bit downhill lately but that may be as a result of being dragged down by others. BUT I 100% trust Fairclough and the chairman. Even if it did only take him a week to use his favourite word of 'warriors'. Our club and it's fans have become very separated lately I think and Fairclough is the man to bring the fight and passion back to the club. This is obviously a decision he's decided to make...but I suspect (and bloody well hope) he has some replacements in line. The chairman has issued a statement (on our website) on how important it is that everyone is committed to the cause, players will be going and new one's brought in. If Basey's heart isn't in it then I quite simply do not want him here. If anything, these articles/actions are showing the clubs intent and quite frankly that's what we need at the moment. Then again there are others who argue they'd rather have that than some of the other rubbish we've got...but like I say hopefully we'll sign some others. The player he was brought in to replace who got injured (also a left sided CB) should be back soon...so maybe we're thinking of signing a right sided one? To be fair no one really knows.
P.S On McLeod...he knows where the goal is....others in the relegation dog fight would kill for him! P.P.S Parky to Barnet? :)

Or perhaps he doesn't want to be a pro in the Football League?

Maybe keen on turning pro at golf
He's just been let go by Barnet for 'a lack of dedication'.
But they've kept McLeod so I doubt Barnet see "dedication" in the same way as the rest of the human race.

Paul Mortimer had given up on a football career and was tempted back.
Steve Brown decided to stay in training while out of contract
Jon Fortune did the same.
The difference between these guys and Basey, is that Basey is only an average player.
At least he was when he was with us
I still think he could be useful cover at Centre back when Doc has one of his days. He quicker than Fortune and his dead ball delivery is missed

But like you, I don't really know - just trying to understand why.
Hence I was careful to say, "Just supposing", and "maybe" and "perhaps".
What a great story, thanks for posting it up and good luck to the lad, let's hope he gets his 30th against Huddersfield
A little bias is normal and expected.
I don't suppose Barnet's OS is any different.
So it may be just the way the reporter has written the article.
