Some people don't realise that there was" top flight" football before "the premiership" :-)

  • I hate and loathe celebrity gimme gimme culture with a vengeance, and the meedja, with its snivelling wannabees and accolytes from the FA / Sky consortia, have turned football into a big 4 business, and robbed us of a team for Ingerland. The bland self congratulatory and characterless MOTM, the inept Football League show and the Adrian Chiles really sicken me. So an escape from that world has its appeal. But there's also something really sad about a quiet Valley with so many empty seats. Throw in some indifferent performances together with crap refs and the Milwall style experiences, then the appeal ebbs away. I like winning, I like to see players battling and fighting for the ball, and its heartening that we're getting that now. We're in with a chance and that's exciting. But I passionately want to get promoted, I want a richer version of RM to buy us, I want to see the class players in action, to have a star come through our ranks and who then wants to stay with us. I don't want to feel wistful when I see Benty and Jonjo with another club, I want to be right there cheering them on. I've a sneaking feeling that I must be a hypocritical closet plastic and that p*****s me off most of all.
  • I love the fact that we are regarded by other teams & quite rightly as a Big Club for this league, they know we are in the wrong division, we know we are in the wrong division, now how the f*** do we get out of it?
  • I am enjoying some good competitive games, actually winning many of them, and the lighter traffic.
I dislike the Referees, and looking around at a half empty Stadium.
I am looking forward to actually hanging on to our exciting youngsters, and giving them a chance which hopefully Parky will do.

Way back in 1988 my brother and I were on the 21 bus on Lee High Road with none other than the great Carl Leaburn.

He was travelling to the training ground to catch the coach to play in a Division One match away at (I think) Southampton.

Whaddya reckon the chances are that sort of thing would happen these days in the "Premiership"?
  • i loved it when our players made their debuts for england whilst we were in the premiership.
  • [cite]Posted By: Carter[/cite]Carlisle by rights should be competing with Cambridge AFC Wimbledon et al in the non-league sects.

Not quite sure you're being fair to Carlisle here, Carts.

When I was a kid in the 60s, and all through the 70s and 80s, Carlisle were consistantly a far from struggling second-flight outfit. We played them regularly in the old Division II .......and they gave us many tough games, often beating us.

They even won promotion to the top flight in the mid 70s and after a fantastic start sat proudly on top of the league, the best team in the land (for a couple of weeks, lol). Then of course, they got found out and tumbled down the division as it all fell apart.

But then Charlton also did exactly that in season 1998-99.

Carlisle have been in the Football League since 1928, apart from those couple of seasons in the conference a few years ago. They've had some tough times in recent years, but to compare them with AFC Wimbledon strikes me as incredibly harsh and unfair, when you consider their history.
  • Only just seen this thread but got to laugh at Swisdoms comment: "They have a vocal hardcore set of fans and their new ground seems to be pretty hostile to visit".

Was he referring to Fenerbahce, Olympiakos or Red Star Belgrade? Nope, he was talking about Colchester. Possibly the quietest and least hostile ground i've been to in my life. And that was when they were murdering us 3-0. Imagine what the place is like when they're losing.
  • Colchester are the new Millwall ....?

  • I dislike this league with a passion!......
Playing third rate football, with third rate players!.

The only good thing about this is when the nightmare stops and we get the hell out of this league to where we belong, the Championship, beyond that is a dream at present.

Diasgree and agree with those about missing nothing from the prem. Apart from the first relegation season in the prem, and maybe the first two succesful ones I can honestly say I hated the shit football the premiership recquires under-resourced teams to play. I can only remember the 96/97 league one season, as being just atrocious, and at least we beat Palace that year with two Lee goals.

Even after Andy Reid left it was hilarious at seeing the worst ever Charlton team develop. Isn't that what's supporting about? Who wants an assinine deisre for Wenger to spend 100 million on a reliable spine to his team? I love watching Charlton, when players like Leaburn, Minto, Pitcher, Primus, Sturgess, Stuart, Newton, Rufus, Bowyer, Nicholls, Parker, Konchesky, and Defoe come through the ranks. So what if some don't make it or fuck off to the Whammies? Isn't getting what you deserve the whole point of footy? So around half the prem stay up by building a national debt close to that of the Congo. What a beautiful game. As long as we survive I'd rather us go on a ride that we deserve.

Having to watch JFH, Faye, El Kak, Traore, Rommedahl and Ambrose put in atrocious performances in the prem was no fun. They may have been a better team of 11 against Liverpool when we lost 3-0, than our 08/09 11's but Jesus they showed even less passion than the 08/09 vintage.

Yes I want to be in the champ. But I don't hate this league. I hate teams like Arsenal who's supporters seem to have no humility, and I goddamn hope we're not like that.
  • To be fair to wenger and arsenal they are probably one of the only prem clubs who don't spend over and what they can afford ....
They bring in a lot of youth talent and play some of the most attractive footy out there, I love watching them play
as opposed to charlton who I'm in love with but think we're an absolute joke and having to listen to our apologist fans warbling on as each and every new player who made a debut for us in the last 4 sorry years was the greatest thing since sliced bread when most were utter toilet and the reason we are where we are is cos we've had so much shit in our team and we've never maximised the ability of our players .... Until now I HOPE !

Frankly what other teams do I have no real interest in, until we have to play them...... Gossip aside, the antics of that lot in the prem, leaves a lot to be desired!

Bit harsh on Uncle Les. Shocking manager admittedly but a great coach and cared far more about the club most who have been on the payroll over the last few years. Certainly doesn't deserve to be in the same list as the likes of Dowie, Pardew, Thomas, JFH, Traore and Faye.

El Kak - as in El Karkouri? Bit harsh, great defender, certainly not a money grabber.
  • Of course the remarks were aimed at him as a manager...... Mr Largo.

El Karkouri and 'great defender' should never be mentioned in the same sentence, unless that sentence is "El Karkouri was not a 'great defender'". His positional sense was poor and he got a couple of red cards if I remember rightly.

However, he did score a few goals and his 35 yard free kick against Arsenal at The Valley was absolutely ridiculous. It was mental that he was even shooting from there. One of the few he got on target though- sometimes his efforts on goal went out for a throw.

He's coming back to Charlton in January by the way. It's a done deal. FACT etc. I read it on Ackworth's Twitter page.

What a frustrating player Dennis Rommedahl was. Surely not the worst though?
  • The crappiest players from our prem days are way ahead of our best players now ........
Just like our crappy manager dowie who wasn't given the generosity of more than 12 games to show his worth with the coaching set up that was given to him by wise old murray

  • What I like aboul League 1is that it always seems to matter and each game is nail biting time. Unlike my Wolves mate who spends his days fretting about 17th place - but that's it - at least it's exciting. Thrilling the last three games certainly were.

Plus you can always get seats.

And it's cheap. Article in WSC - Wolves one of most expensive clubs etc etc etc.

And tons of games in West Country where I live. Of course I'd like to go back up. But you can't always get what you want, you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you might just get......
  • Dabos said of El Karkouri :

''he did score a few goals and his 35 yard free kick against Arsenal at The Valley was absolutely ridiculous. It was mental that he was even shooting from there. One of the few he got on target though- sometimes his efforts on goal went out for a throw.''

Sorry, AFKA, we're going more off topic than ever here now - but I have to say I remember a goal he hit from a free kick that same season from even further out. I think it was against Birmingham City?

You can say it was ''mental'' that he was shooting from that distance. But he managed to embarass several keepers, didn't he?

OK, back on topic. Division three. It hasn't changed since my last post. It's still crap!
