Good & Bad Of Benno

edited November 2010 in General Charlton
I think that Paul Benson can be the most frustrating Addicks player to watch .

I personally don't think he been any good for us, even though he has scored a few goals. All of his goals apart from the "bullet" header at Carlise have been 5 yard tap Ins. Did he ever score any good ones at Daggers?

Also the think that really annoys me is that you never really see him in the game apart from getting his head on a ball. I think we need to invest in a striker that has good footwork, quick, strong and someone who scores here there and everywhere.

  • They all count mate, they dont all have to be 30 yard screamers. Give me 20 6 yard tap ins over 5 screamers any day
  • To be honest i think with Anyinsah partnering Benson is best for the both of them, Anyinsah with hes pace, strengh etc, and benson getting on the end of most balls. This will work fine im sure, and its starting to work well.
  • If only it was as easy as 'investing in someone who's quick strong and scores anywhere'. Can you name anyone. Benno is known for his poaching type goals from 5 yards but if that brings 20 goals in a season you won't fins many complaining. Also on Saturday you see he won most headers and put himself about working his socks off.

  • not sure how you can start this thread after saturday, I've been critical of him but he produced a proper centre forward performance in my opinion - all he needed to top it off was a goal.

carries on playing like that and I'll be happy
  • What Dizzle said.

You won't find someone quick, strong, skilful who scores goals but isn't good enough for anything more than League One.
  • What an absolutely ridiculous thread. Were you one of the people that said that all Darren Bent did was score goals?

So you think we should get Wayne Rooney? Tevez? Messi?, were a league 1 club, the only teams that can afford players like you have just described are top 5 in the premier league everyone else is just a gamble!! Benson has got better and better especailly playing alongside Anyinsah. I wasn't impressed with him when he first came, but as games have been coming thick and fast his all round play has been getting better.

Give the club 10million conza and Im sure they will

You are obviously having a laugh. So his other one at carlisle was a 5 yard tap in was it? And you're goinjg to tell me he didnt run The Sheff Wed defender ragged opening up all sorts of space for other players on Saturday?

The bloke had a blinder on saturday, and was everywhere. We have not got a pot to pee in at present, and you want a better striker than Benson.

Most of Killers goals were in the six yard box. Ever seen clips of Jimmy Greaves's goals?
  • Fair comments goals are goals i agree with that but I would like to see him get more of the possession and when he does produce a bit of quality.

    And missed Saturdays game sorry

I know what ya mean mate, but honestly if you would have seen him on saturday, i dont think you would have started this thread.
  • Some players might not have certain aspects of there game which pleases fans. Benno doesn't look physical but if he scores us the 20 goals a season we havnt seen in years and carrys on throwing himself about at defenders then we will have ourselfs a happy valley
  • Thought he was excellent on Saturday. Seemed to struggle to get involved in his first few games but was dropping deeper and getting a lot more of the ball on Saturday. Think Anyinsah will be a good partner for him as well.

Having said that, I'd certainly prefer to have someone who "has good footwork, quick, strong and someone who scores here there and everywhere." Presumably you have a few names in mind who meet that description, are available on low wages and with a transfer fee of no more than 200k and who are desperate to play third division football?
  • His first goal at Carlisle was no tap in, if I remember correctly he muscled between 2 defenders and shot left footed into the corner of the goal - no tap involved.
  • Oh dear,

I love the idea that five yard tap in goals aren't "good".

If a team has managed to move the ball around the pitch, passed the ball well enough and at the right times to stay on side while getting close enough to give a forward the time and space to score a tap in then that is "good" play.

Plus any Charlton goal is good goal in my book.
  • I do think that the system helps. On Saturday we had wide men and full backs getting balls in, Racon pulling the strings in the midfield and (most importantly for me) Benno partnered with a strong willing runner. I think in other games, when he's been up top alone or when he doesn't have someone quite so nippy and strong as Joe with him, he's had to win the ball then hold it up for so long that he's getting swarmed.

Totally agree that a goals a goal. Some of the most brilliant strikers of all time were primarily tap-in merchants. Paolo Rossi, Mario Kempes, Gerd Muller even Lineker did most of their best work in the 6 yard box.
  • and don't forget Jimmy Greaves
  • Ruud Van Nistlerooy scored probably over 100 goals for united from inside the 12 yard box at most, yet he is one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen

    Go figure

  • Benson is going to be a real asset for us. Odd thread to start.
  • You just cant please some people. I think he played excellent on saturday and is a very clever player. His runs off the ball create space for the rest of the team. Its threads and comments like this that puts unwanted pressure on players.
  • Clearly a badly timed and ill-considered starter which others have correctly disputed. He was excellent on Saturday, with Joe the ideal partner. Interesting that it was Benson who did a lot of the unglamorous donkey work, giving Elliot a real target that was so obviously (and disappointingly) missing with the taller, bulkier Abbott alongside. Thought Benson got dragged far too deep v Brighton when we want him up top threatening the goal. It's nice if we can add more to his game but the 250k was spent to ensure goals; while he has to fit into a gameplan anything else is a bonus really. Against Wednesday he really seemed to get the balance right and you really felt a goal wasn't far away, on top of all his hard work.

    ..........

No idea what he achieved at D&R, but don't knock a guy who can goal poach. As I've mentioned before, we worship Derek Hales, but I don't recall him curling that many in from 30 yards, indeed from that distance he was less a swan and more of aduckling and possibly the greatest goal scorer of them all (Gerd Muller) once said something to the effect that he never scored a great goal in his career. What matters to me is that Benson gets well into double figures this season and sets a fair few up for other players and scores the goals that matter - the ones such as the winner at Carlisle that gave us two points more than we looked liked getting.

It's worth noting that RVN only scored one goal for Man U from outside the penalty area. I'll let you guess who the unfortunate opponents were...

I think he is insinuating I like to ride knobs.

Like a jockey does a horse. He's so grown up, he should learn to handle his drink on a Saturday evening...
