The Brighton Effect

From the BBC

Gary Johnson 'assessing' Peterborough United options

Peterborough United manager Gary Johnson insists he is not considering quitting the club despite having doubts over his influence on the team.
After Saturday's 3-0 home defeat by Brighton the Posh boss told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "You have to look at yourself and say 'is it me?'.
"Because if it's me you're better off not being around."
The former Bristol City manager arrived at the club in the summer having been set the task of achieving immediate promotion back to the Championship by chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

And while the weekend's defeat puts Posh down to fifth in League One they are still only one point off an automatic promotion place and are the league's highest scorers with 29 goals in 14 games.

Next few fixtures in the league are Walsall away, us at home, Southampton away. Can't see them getting more than 4 points from those, if they go out of the cup too, he will be under a lot of pressure....

Then again, two games ago Parky was looking weak. Funny what 6 points can do!

3 at Walsall and one from us?
    You may well be right

29 goals already and the manager has doubts. Strange world

Us and Posh won't be the only decent teams in this league that get hammered by Brighton

Strange a year ago Brighton were languishing around 20th in the league.
Poyet has clearly made a difference, though they were still 21st a month after he took over so it clearly takes time

It was very obvious from the game at the Valley last year that they were going to be a different prospect. The challenge for them is going to be keeping him.

Didnt he recently sign a 4 year, including all his back room staff?
Will he become a name in every hat Curbs-type manager from now on?
He clearly has talent so as you say, quite a challenge for them to hold on to him

Brighton will come back to the pack when the weather changes and heavy grounds start to affect their passing game. Their own pitch wont help them either during the winter months. Opponents will also devise a better plan to nullify them in return fixtures second time around later in the season. Still early days - Leeds were clear this time last season and only scraped through on the last game.

I'd agree with the above. Even in the game against us I wondered what would have happened if we'd taken one of our chances and taken the lead. It's much easier to play a smart patient game when you're on good pitches, confident from winning games, and not chasing after falling a goal behind. Once those heavy pitches come along, and they take a couple of defeats then we'll really see Poyet's pedigree.

Don't like to wish ill on others but just seen that Kazenga Lua Lua is out for around 3 months which is a real blow for Brighton.

What are the funds like at Brighton following the building of their Falmer stadium?

They have 14 midfielders on their books already, but LL will be hard to replace

Not convinced that their squad has strength in depth ... will be interesting to see how they cope with injuries and winter pitches

"Fans need to trust the management, trust the chairman, trust director of football and see where we end up," he said.
But he also warned his players that a major improvement is needed over the coming weeks.
"Ultimately it's about the players out on the pitch because we know those players can play, but on occasions this season we have looked poor," he said.

    Hmm which team?

    Well its
''Peterborough United boss Gary Johnson insists he is still the man for the manager's job at London Road.'' (BBC)

Will this defeat see them galvanised, just like us post Brighton?

Swindon beat Plymouth 4-0 away and Colchester 2-1 at home since we played them. Maybe they've been galvanised

Interesting to note the Brighton were soundly beaten by Hartlepool at the weekend on a bobbly pitch against some long-ball football!

Fingers crossed they have a little slump now and we can take advantage

yup broken ankle. Still reckon they will drop off a bit. Definitely top 6 but sooner or later people are going to get stuck into their tippy-tappy football and it looks like it's happened already - not the biggest squad either. Still think Southampton and Huddersfield look strong and have good depth, Wednesday if they fight off this admin threat could be galvanised and kick on as well.
