It has amazed me the amount of knowledge and the amount of memories people have about Charlton. I have been going since 1960, and my old man has been going since 1932. We are hoping this season to have 4 generations at a game.
My memories are -
the smell of liniment around the pitch
trying to hop in at the Bartram entrance
the smell of the programme ( why I don't know )
trying to hop into the seats through the side gate
running on when Ray Treacy scored a spectacular volley
standing almost alone on the East terrace watching a Southport game
a goal against Oldham that never was
waiting for autographs in Floyd Road. Sometimes a player was walking down from the station !!!
Tocknell hitting a penalty over the stand
Lenny Glover and Mike Kenning and a young Billy Bonds
Harry Gregorys tight shorts
Eddie Firmani clean through and sitting on the ball before scoring ( vague memoory )
rain, mud and cold. Peanuts and tea.
Thrashing Swansea and Notts County in a matter of days ( ? ) I think
Walking past the cementry. The 161a from Chislehurst.
Some bloke called Peter who always got on at Dunkery Road..............
Knitted scarves, rossettes and having to beat Bolton to stay up.
Blimey, I'm rattling on a bit, got carried away.
Lewis coaches, Charlies cafe, 5 a sides at Wembley.
Lastly, wearing a velvet jacket to an away game at Oldham and thinking that without me scarf I didn't stand out.
Cheering like mad a late Millwall equaliser against Charlton. ( if anyone can guess why I will put a tenner for them behind the bar at the Oak )
