  • He got done out on the wing by Vassell for the only goal. Pretty much the same as Llera getting done in similar positions...CB's will get done when left totally exposed. He also had a bit of a mare against Walsall in the cup (when his Portuguese mate scored) but all in all, Costa did really well for us. He was a sort of Paul Miller type, pretty weak in the air, slow but a great blocker, good on the ball, positionally astute and had total self-belief which rubbed off on others.
  • My dad is an AC Milan supporter and he was telling me about this brilliant Swedish centreforward Hasse Jeppson who played 11 matches for Charlton in 1951 incredibly scoring
9 goals. That same year Jeppson left Charlton for Atalanta in Italy.A year later Jeppson was transferred to Napoli for a then new world record transfer fee. Also scored two goals for Sweden in the 1950 world cup.I wonder if anyone has more info on this phenomenon and also how we ever let him go?

According to Jimmy Seed's book he was only ever going to be a short term signing as he was in the UK on business. Apparently the main difficulty was getting him to The Valley before Arsenal got hold of him!

His goals saved us from relegation though that season apparently.
  • Thanks for the info Len.I wonder if there are any lifers or their aquaintances that watched any of his games for Charlton?
  • Hans Jeppson...my dad was at Highbury when Jeppson scored his hat-trick for us.
  • Didn't Paul Kitson score a winner v Millwall (or was it Palace?) whilst here on loan?

Then he came back and scored a hat trick against us for West Ham in a crazy 4-4 draw!
  • Talk of the hatrick reminds me of Jim Melrose (I know he played about 50 games for us and doesnt meet the thread criteria), but his fastest goal made an impact!

It was at Palace in our record run. They had Ashley Cole at left back. Weird.

That must have been an incredible footballing day to savour forever.
