  • (ahem) - 'fazed'
  • lol, Leroy ...... but you are right!

    ;o)
  • A stunning mistake, Captain
  • But let's be positive .... an interesting article about Benson, hearing things from his point of view.
  • Parky wants him to do more game wise than he did at Dagenham. Genuine question, what was wrong with just playing him the way Still's did? CL Pundits explanations please.
  • Agreed Oggy
Both NS articles today give hope about the players attitudes and our future.
I am enjoying this season more since I decided we are on a three year rebuilding exercise, thus not getting too bothered by defeats or short term deficiencies
I have decided not to pass judgement on the club until next season, or until relegation becomes a real threat

Not sure if you were at the 'nam game, but they play their football very direct. I suspect what Parkinson meant was that he wanted Benson to do more than just keep up with play and hang around in the box - i.e. drop into midfield and drift out wide to fetch the ball rather than just wait for it to be lumped into him.

That and for example in the Dagenham league game he started with Anyinsah who had the pace to get in behind, so Benson was the one who dropped deep at times.
  • Basically agree, Leroy and Scoham - but with one slight reservation.
A player's game can always be improved - and sure it's a team game and a side can't afford to carry passengers.

But if you get your oppportunist goal scorer chasing all round the pitch you can find he's not always in the box at the right time, to put away those loose balls.

So, like always, a balance between graft and craft is required. We know what Benson's game is .... to nick those opportunist goals, convert the simple/loose ball chances that otherwise always seem to go begging.

That's what he does best. So play to his strengths.

That's what puzzled me. Presumably we'd bought the player because he would fit in with our game plan, but we then set about trying to change/improve him. If he's best as a poacher, surely we'd have known that before we bought him? I know we've got scoring options elsewhere, but RM paid up handsomely for a striker, so it's all a bit baffling to me.

  • I suppose it would be that Benson's primary job is indeed to be the man of the moment in the right place to score but if the ball isn't forthcoming he'll have to do some work to get it, i.e. not be just a poacher. That's his strength but I guess Parky hopes he can add to his game as well.
  • “I’m playing for Charlton and Phil Parkinson now so I’ll do anything he asks me to do and try to do it to the best of my ability.”

    Interesting..

Yep, I'm not doubting that. I think he was a poor buy, tbh - have thought it since we signed him. Not because I'm down on the bloke, but because I don't think he's the sort of striker we need. We need someone who is quick and able to create something for himself - not someone who feeds off scraps. Its OK buying a striker and not playing to his strengths... IF he has ability in other areas. I don't think Benson does - but I'd love to be proved wrong. Hopefully the goal he made for himself at Plymouth shows that he's capable of creating chances as well as just hanging around in the six yard box.

I think Parky knows he's best as a poacher, but like Leroy said, Dag & Red play very direct. I don't think Parky is asking him to do anything drastically different. Just hold up and link the play where possible. He's 30/nearly 31, I'm sure when they talk about him adapting and changing, it's just a few small things Parky wants him to do slightly differently than he would with Dagenham.

"quick and able to create something for himself" - that's surely what we've signed Anyinsah to do.

I agree Benson doesn't have any real quality in other areas, but I don't see why he needs to show he has. He's been brought in as a poacher and that's how we've been trying to use him, we've tried to get the ball to him in the box. They were all poacher's goals weren't they? Getting in the right position and/or anticipating a chance is about to open up.
