Terraces........especially in the winter months. Easier to keep warm by moving around or getting in the middle of a crowd. Seating tends to subdue the fans which takes away the atmosphere which in turn doesn't get the players pumped up as much. Sometimes i look around and it's as though there's 15,000 sitting there watching Eastenders or something equally depressing. There was much more of a "us" attitude amongst supporters. Also has a lot to do with the lack of songs being sung at games nowadays. "CAFC,CAFC,CAFC,CAFC,CAFC" Gets a bit monotonous very quickly. Can't see it ever coming back though.
The terraces were OK when they were steep enough. I remember standing on the terrace at Highbury and being short couldn't see a thing. The terrace at the Valley was OK and I loved a good surge.
Always preferred seats, but thats no reason why a controlled terracing area should not be available for those that prefer to stand. it would be interesting to know if we made 1500 standing places available at the valley if attendances would be increased or we would simply shift fans from seats to standing and subsequently reduce revenue.
I don't mind seats but i think terraces creates a better atmosphere. I agree with Kap though, i think they should introduce standing areas. It works in Germany, Dortmund for example have a capacity of about 80k, something like 60k seats and a huge 20k terrace.

I suggested that when we got relegated to League 1. The general consensus from those in the know was that it would cost too much at a time when the club was making people redundant, which was fair enough, and that Greenwich Council would be unlikely to agree to it under the terms of our satefy certificate.
Would love it if that did happen, the atmosphere at The Valley, and all seater grounds in general is so sterile these days.
Always a better atmosphere in a stadium with packed terraces methinks.
What was that big lump of terracing called at The Valley? The East Bank? East Terrace?...... That was massive - how many did it hold? Come to think of it, the Covered End looked quite a size too.

no reason why it cant be converted to safe standing. i think it would make a huge difference to The Valleys modern day atmosphere
be happy to pay more for a season ticket for the privilege.
Seats, the Premiership and Sky Tv have killed the game here, or at least the atmosphere
In the unlikely event that we are promoted back to the Premiership one day (!!!) we would have to convert it back if the rules stay as they are now.
I don't believe Sky have killed the atmosphere. Does a game being on TV mean fans sing less?
Combined with seats and the premiership as Choice said, cumulatively yes. Football is over-hyped and too commercial, the crowds watching football are combined of different types of people sitting down leaning back and it just doesn't mean the same anymore. SOOOO many games on the tele the atmosphere of being at and watching a game just isn't as exciting as before. I was on holiday in Amsterdam last week and on the first night out there I got out of a tram and there was a pub within 20 yards showing MK Dons Vs Charlton Athletic in the Johnstones effing paints trophy! I was obviously pleased on the night but it has gone beyond a joke when you can watch such a terrible meaningless game that even I, a die-hard supporter, really cared little about. Overkill overkill overkill. BEING AT A FOOTBALL MATCH DOESN'T MEAN THE SAME ANYMORE. I was in a foreign country and I was actually quite looking forward to the excitement of being texted the goals and score... absence makes the heart grow fonder etc... but no! I just feel too disconnected from footballers now; when I first started going the players sat in the stand next to me when they were out injured etc; they public-transported it to the game!
And even though obviously most would agree it is better that families and women can go to football these days; in reality that does effect the atmosphere - people are not generally as likely to go and shout and swear and be aggressive and passionate in front of their kids or their mrs - to be honest I tone down my aggression when I'm with my Dad...
There's more passion in my Sunday League games than at the Valley these days... I miss the old days! As somebody said in another thread, I feel like football is dying / dead in many ways, I am slowly becoming more and more turned off by it - all that keeps me going is my love of Charlton Athletic...
