Geordies - Great support or not?

edited October 2010 in General Charlton
What's the opinion of the Charlton faithfull? Are Newcastle as well supported as ppeople make out? And what are Sunderland and Middlesborough like? From my own personal experiences as a Barnsley fan Newcastle have always brought a decent following to Oakwell. The worst being somewhere around the 2,500 mark for a re-arranged evening fixture towards the end of he 82/83 season. Middlesbrough, by comparison, are very poor.

I seem to recall somewhere that they took thousands to The Valley when keegan was in their team?

  • Yep, Geordies always turn-up at the Valley in numbers, Sunderland come second with a decent following and Boro a poor third. The Smog Monsters have always caused the most trouble!
  • I've seen them only barely half fill the Jimmy Seed.
It's a myth that they always sell out the away ends.
  • I remember a few seasons back when it was Charlton vs Newcastle it was live on Sky with a 12:45 kick off and it was Mothering Sunday and they filled the South Stand. Its prob a 700 plus mile round trip from Newcastle to London. Based on that they are prob the best away support in the country!
  • boro have dreadful away support
  • I think they are superb fans. I always felt ,going back to the 80s, that a Newcastle game at the Valley summed up what English football terraces are all about. Even a comfortable middle class Geordie lives and breathes football.
  • There numbers are made better in London by xpats,Sundeland 1st class going by Wembley experience
  • Sunderland always bought thousands to the Valley back in the 70's along with Portsmouth
  • Newcastle have good support and always seem to travel in numbers, no doubt about that. But all of this "greatest supporters in the land" pony is wide of the mark.

I remember being up there in the 80's and they only got something like 14,000 through the door. People tend to conveniently forget that.
  • all those whinging geordies moaning after ben arfa's broken leg, are probably the same ones that threw coins and other stuff at colin walsh as he was stretchered off at st james.

    for that reason, i'm out.
  • Remember Graham Tutt at Sunderland too

in the 80s man utd were only getting in the 30 thousands and we were getting 3-5000 so people tend to forget that crowds were poor mainly all round in the 80's before football became trendy again due to sky premiership hype and euro 96 ...
keegans last game in london the toon brought bundles and that was before footy got trendy
  • Not for me either. let em have 6 prem tems on their door step and see what crowds they would get. When they almost went down to the third level there wasnt to many about then,
  • Sporting wise there's not a lot going on in Newcastle, other than football. A one club city with a big catchment area and a sizeable working class community to boot. Plus there's a big ex-pat community.
  • What a bizarre thread to find on a third division club's fan site. The answer's yes, but there's bigger (football) things to worry about.
