Wimbledon didn't bring many to The Valley in 1985. Crowd was only 4,500!!
We got some very poor crowds v Crystal Palace too. 1982/83 = 7,800, 83/84 = 10,200 (Boxing Day!) 84/85 = 6,100. The away followings (like the home ones) for those games were pretty low.
By contrast during that period, Chelsea would bring about 6,000 (despite only having regular home crowds of 14-15,000) and both Watford and Spurs brought about 8,000 for FA Cup Ties.
I guess Donny Rovers did have the excuse that they were only getting crowds of 1,500 back then!
For the record 1984/85....Barnsley v Charlton 6,300 and at The Valley.....wait for it.....3,832. Mind you, the football that season from a Charlton point of view was mainly woeful...apart from the Barnsley match which we won 5-3 after being 3-0 down. You did beat us 1-0 at Oakwell though...and I threw the ball back to Tony Towner to take a corner in the last minute. I might as well have booted it out of the ground for all the good it did!
I can well recall the 5-3 defeat. Ron Futcher scored a hat trick and then got sent off. I seem to remember that he kicked down the referees' dressing room door and the club had to appear in front of the FA (?).
First time I visited The Valley was in 80/81 for a 1-1 draw. Both teams were pushing for promotion.
