micky kelly

edited September 2010 in General Charlton
does anyone remember a player by the name of micky kelly? he had a brief spell with us, i think early seventies, played only a few games, i think he was a millwall supporter and may even have played for them? i remember him scoring a goal for us, though i think it was a couldn't miss, rather than a cracker.

the reason i ask, is that he was part of my social scene in 1969, not particularly as a friend but more a rival gang member, we were skinheads. i wore the clothes but didn't take on the ethos, apart from the music. i heard he got stabbed and then went of the rails, drinking, i would really love to know what happened to him.

any help appreciated, thanks

  • He did play for us and later got banged up (subsequent to a spell at Millwall which seems appropiate) if memory serves me right. I think he got more than one goal for us too and played about 10 games or so.

I could be wrong (we're talking about a longtime ago) but I thought he was the stabber rather than stabbee in the incident you mention.

just looked in valiants 500 and he made 10 appearances in our 74/5 promotion season and scored 3 goals including an 88th minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw at home to port vale
  • We signed him from Millwall in 74-75. He played 10 games, scored 3 goals and then went to Bexley United. I heard it was his girlfriend who stabbed him in the thighs and that was why he finished his career early.

Played for Cray Wanderers from 1979 to 1981 according to this.
  • According to The Valiant 500 he played 10 games and scored 3 goals (well done Len) all in the 74/5 promotion season. He played 28 games and scored 5 goals in his league career.

Nothing about stabbing but he was at Millwall before us and then had his contract terminated on 25 April 75 which is odd as we still had two league games to play and still needed a point to go up instead of Palace.

he then went to various non-league sides in the area (Bexley, Dartford, Cray W, Carshalton)

Also in the picture in the book he has long hair and a beard so certainly no skinhead by then.

I remember him, "Ned" Kelly we used to call him.

Sat in CM, strong as an ox .... and had a wicked long range shot.
And as Henry says, long curly 70s style hair.

Sacked by Charlton, following the stabbing incident and police investigation.
  • I remember him. As Henry said quite long scruffy brown hair & a moustache/beard.Remember him scoring the late equaliser against Port Vale.
As said, sacked after the stabbing incident. Praps you would describe him as a Terry Hurlock type.
  • thanks for the info fellas, a right veritable font of knowledge you guys are. i'm amazed so many of you remember him, i didn't think he made much of an impact, maybe it was the stabbing event?

i think it was the port vale equalizer that i remember because of his exuberant goal celebration, which is fair enuf, if scored in the 88th minute.

so the stabbing seems as though it was well known but who did he stab or who stabbed him, is the question, is it not?

no surprise he had long hair and a beard henry, by 74/75 i had long and hair and a beard and was into the hippy thing. the skinhead phase was short lived but exciting, particularly for the clothes and the music, we weren't into violence or anything.

would love to know where he is now?
  • Contact the Former Players Association. They may know.

I think there is a contact email on the OS but some of the committee post on here occasionally.
  • So pro player stabs someone. Just shows that in the 70s players thought they were above the law, too much money, all brainless and violent, blah, blah, blah. And that Peter Shilton was caught in a car with a woman who wasn't his wife.

Glad that players don't do things like that now. Think of the moral outrage if they did.

  • I don't think he stabbed anyone. I used to know him slightly at the time and my memory of the affair was that his wife/partner stabbed him.

He certainly could put it away, mind, and was often to be found in the Red Barn irrespective of whether there was a match coming up. Perhaps that is what cost him his career? He was a decent enough player.

As I said above it was all a long time ago so I stand to be corrected.

However why would Charlton sack him and why would he be banged up if he was the victim rather than the perpetrator?

    Were there other incidents?
  • I do remember him playing and I also seem to recall playing against him many years later. Not sure who he was playing for but the name Canada Dry springs to mind.
  • I remember being very impressed with our new signing at the time, he looked good and scored a couple of goals. Then he just seemed to disappear.
  • Scored in the draw at The Goldstone Ground the day it rained cats and dogs maybe late 70s.Was behind the goal that day when he scored late on ,made the journey home go a lot faster.
  • Mick now lives on the Isle of Wight and comes back to the Bexley area frequently to see his mum and also work .
