Cars cont...WORST car you ever owned

edited August 2010 in General Charlton
Without doubt mine was a MG Metro Turbo. It was the third car i owned and i bought it at auction. It overheated every time it was in traffic . The Turbo never worked and it rusted on both wings. Coming home from Great Yarmouth i got caught in traffic and blew the top end on it. Head gasket cooked - Good riddance. Surely the worst car ever made in this country ???.

This thread could cause some controversy - one man's banger is another man's classic car! When I say "man", I do mean "man or woman" of course!

The worst car I owned, just because of the state of it was a Ford Classic - not many people will know what that looks like. I did like overhearing people arguing about what it was at petrol stations though. To give you an idea of the condition, most of one of the back wings was fiberglass, the boot floor had a kink in it, I would think caused by the accident that did for the back wing, and it had rust and filler everywhere.

Had a dog of an N reg Escort a few years ago, head gasket went, tires were bald, engine temperature sensor didn't work (so no radiator fan and hence the head gasket problems). Got shot as soon as I could afford to

This was the Ford Consul Classic - following the big old things (last model the 375?).
There was also the catchily named Ford Consul Classic Capri - visually the same from the front but instead of the inverted rear window (à la Anglia) it had a slopey out one and was (maybe) a two-door.

Bought a used Audi 80 once. It died on the way home from the garage. Some b... had filled cracks in a cylinder (or something -- I know nothing about cars) using soap!

Otherwise, an Austin Allegro, bought new, which was always having electrical blackouts. I should have known better.

    Triumph Dolomite 1850 (VRT 279 M)

riddled with rust and had a warped cylinder head. Even after skimming it, head gaskets would last about a fortnight. Got that job down to less than two hours so many times did I have to do it.

My Seat Ibiza Cupra. Was ridiculously fast in that unless it was a straight, dry road it was horrible. Only got rid of it a couple of months ago.

Montego 2.0 Si. Never bonded with the car (the way a mother bonds with a child not in the P38 sense)

The car never let me down but always regarded it as a bit of a dog.

I've only owned 4 cars and they've all been alright. My Mum had a Volvo 340GT (2.0 litre twin carb sports trim version) for a bit which had the hardest ride I've ever experienced in a car, well excluding in that lay-by in Scotland but that's another story! She used to give me a lift to school in it (about 1 mile) and I'd have a bad back by the time I got there.

Wife had a T-reg 316 BMW. The diff gave up but she wouldnt get rid of it for some unbeknown reason. Scrapped it in the end. 4 months later got a visit from CID - the car had been used as a getaway vehicle in an armed robbery! Amazed they got away!

Had a E reg Fiat Croma on loan for a month between cars - what a pile of shite! Must have moved on as Schumacher has one he uses as a road car nowadays.

A 1977 Triumph Spitfire with ´70s BL electrics and all the rest.

The windscreen wipers would stop working when it rained, the exhaust gasket had to be replaced every 3 months and I won´t go into details about the rust problems.

Ah an MG Maestro NLA... I too had one in white. As you suggest a right old rattlebox but it would thrash the pants off a Peugeot 206 gti Ford XR2/XR3 at lights a perversely old man's boy racer though I had mine in my 20s. Traded it in for a new shape Rover 214si when I was loyal to British cars

Never had a really bad car, but the worst was a Mitsubishi Gallant which had been exported after three years in Japan, had the steering changed in Asia somehwere then changed back again in Thailand when I bought it.
Left it at a mates house for a run around when I visited Thailand for holidays and it was washed away in the Tsunami
Had huge red SE7 on front trunk and sides
    sigh

Oh this is an easy one lol

First car in 1994 exactly as seen in photo below, Austin Allegro (aka old aggro) was very old even in 94, automatic and had a bit of an oil problem.

There was no doubt that at the first opportunity it was going on a Charlton away day.

This turned out to be The FA Cup Replay @ Blackburn. I asked a few to come in the car but they opted for the coach instead!

I left home at 0730 for some strange reason, remember stopping at Coventry on route and got to Blackburn pretty early, around 1300. Took some photos of the countryside and generally enjoyed myself as you do when you have just passed your test and are out on your own for the first time properly, it was an adventure!!

The pub that was run by the Charlton fan outside the ground was shut, in fact the whole town seemed shut except a desolate Ladbrokes i found in Darwen.

The afternoon passed by without anything to report except that i lost some money in the bookies and eventually met up with some mates who turned up on the coach. Pre match gathering in the pub, won the match against the odds FANTASTIC. Nothing could go wrong.

Obviously no sat navs back then and it was 10pm and once again mates refused to travel in car. I decided to follow the supporters coach back to the motorway, it was dark there were some country lanes and before you could say "Super Darren Pitcher" I was absolutely lost 100% with no coach in sight. Lost it at some lights..

    Times Approx

0000 - Allegro arrives in Bolton (im sure this is further away but manage to find motorway somehow
0200 - Smoke from Engine on Motorway (M6 I believe)
0205 - Engine now on fire on Motorway
0210 - Services (no idea where)
0215 - Open bonnet douse with water, smoke everywhere, walk into service station
0220 - Arrive back at car with a cup of tea
0400 - Finally have spoken to AA
0405 - Kip on back seat
    0700 - AA arrive
0705 - Towed to garage in Telford
0900 - Work carried out on car commences
0905 - Call work with the story that i had eaten a dodgy kebab the night before and wouldn't be in.
1300 - Cost over £200, no money, ring dad for help
1330 - Back on the road, new radiator etc
    1900 - Arrive home

    Next Day

Supervisor (who was a close friend of mine) convinced im lying and is aware of football previous evening. I never told him the truth for about 5 years after.

    Next Week

    Renault 4

I bought it from a very nice man on a car lot near The Standard (many years ago). It didn't start very well but did have that lovely extra of a starting handle ( for younger Lifers this is a handle you inserted in the front of the engine and by turning it you could start the engine). Well on a very snowy day in deepest Dorset it wouldn't start and in my annoyance I managed to put the starting handle through the radiator - the snow turned a lovely flouresent green - very pretty but the car was knackered!
