Rodney didn't play that much for us did he ? My memory is a bit crap these days

Matt Tees fantastic leader of the line, superb heading ability.

remember the line from the late, great Ray Treacy .. 'I live off Matt Tees' ..

EDIT .. just a thought .. the photo of Matt on page 2 .. he's a dead ringer for the 5th Beatle, George Martin

I had it in my head that Rodney went to Gillingham after us. He did play for Gillingham but that was before he linked up with Matt at Grimsby! Rodney actually left us for Luton and you're right he didn't play much.

He got injured fairly soon after arrival.
  • Covered end used to sing to the John Lennon song - "all we are saying is give peace a chance".
"All we are saying is give Tees a chance".
    Great memories of Matt Tees.

  • Sad to see him tonight on Alan Shearer's programme on the relationship between heading the ball and dementia.
  • Indeed. Watching it now.
  • Gutted to see one of my hero's in the state he is now.

    We also used to sing;

    Aye, aye, aye,aye

    Charlie is better than Yashin,

Matt Tees is better than Eusabio,

and (insert opposition name) are in for a thrashing'

    IIRC

Edit; Matt Tees is of course Charlie Wright's brother in law.

  • Very sad to see him suffering but some nice footage of him in Charlton colours with Keith Peacock and Harry Gregory. Good memories of those times.

With Alan Campbell and a very blonde Bob Curtis too.
  • I saw it,too--was wondering if there would be any support among Lifers for a fund-raising effort to offer as a token of the esteem in which those who saw him play hold him.A gesture of affection for all the games he played, the valuable assists to Ray Treacy among others and the goals he scored, and the memories we have of him.But he,unfortunately, has less and less recollection of those games and goals.I'm not sure what target would be realistic, though.
    Any thoughts,please? Thank you.

Surely it was ‘harry is better than eusabio’ ?
  • I recall it as Matt Tees.

Used to change it for whoever we fancied at the time.

No you may have sung that but I along with the rest of the Covered End sang Matt Tees. You sure you used to venture into that part of the ground with us older big boys?

Well mate no one was going to argue with you so if you chanted another name now and again, I'm sure I'd have followed suit
  • He scored the first ever goal I saw Charlton score at the Valley.

    Not even in jest
  • La la la Barry Endean.
  • La la la Barry Endean.

    Charltonised.

Scored goals for everyone but us.

Slow and fat and never in the right place at the right time.
Did manage to score a goal for us once.

    La la la Barry Endean.

Well, compared to Dickie Plumb he was.

  • I may have got this wrong but I think he played up front on occasion with Bobby Hunt. Almost as bad as the G Force of Grant and Gorman at Bristol City in the early 90s. Anyway back to Hunt and Endean. Always remember an old lag on the East Terrace shouting out after about half an hour "come on numbers 8 and 9, at least pretend you're playing!"

Jessica Lange is better than Eusabio,
    Nargh, doesn’t sound right.
