Matt Fry

The most pointless loan player ever to come to Charlton last season...how long was he with us...2 months? never even made the bench...

Was looking forward to seeing him this year as rave reviews....two games in, I am still looking forward to it but starting to wonder (no doubt very prematurely) if he isn't just Cory Gibbs in disguise...

Comments

  • Bit harsh as last year the loan rule hindered him. Unsure why he did not play tonight (assuming he was not there?) but there is still plenty of time for him to make a mark.

Unsure how Llera played but I am guessing not too well so Fry may jump ahead of him in the pecking order.
  • He was injured..was on OS before game.
  • Did whu have some sort agreement incase he gets recalled for a possible carling cup game in january?
  • OS said he was injured.
  • OK, hopefully we'll see him soon
  • Got to be ahead of Llera, judging by the comments elsewhere he was as bad as ever.
  • He is still able to play for West Ham reserves, but I think the implications were that if fit he would play. Re last season he was only brought in as cover and as previously said suffered from the 5 loan players in squad rule. Against Swindon home leg he was only able to have a bench place because Akpoe signed permanently
  • What an utterly ridiculous thread, last season he fell foul of the no more than 5 loanees in a squad rule, tonight he was injured. Unbelievable.
  • I am hoping that he will get a chance at LB, only so we can see Jackson move into midfield. Imho Jackson is wasted at LB and would thrive in the centre alongside Semedo (when back from suspension)

    Agree.

None of us are perfect, but it wouldn't have done any harm for the first poster to check his facts first, before jumping to conclusions.

Parky said the agreement last year was that we would only pay wages if he played. When his name did not appear on the team sheet I did wonder about him Cup tied even though it said on the OS Wham had given their permission.

This year Fry is on a 'Youth loan' , according to the interview on iplayer he said that if he is not in our team he can go back and play in their Reserves.Without having our own Reserves now I think this is actually good for us as it would ensure he is still playing competitively.Clearly if he got injured playing for them it would be unfair for Charlton to pick up his wages and his loan would end.

Another theory I wonder with Semedo's injury whether Parky may start Fry at Orient and move Jacko up to Mid field and left him out last night as a precaution?
  • ok os says fry is injured but we didnt play this guy last time he was on loan with us! surey whu want us to play him in games! i mean he could sit doing nothing back at whu its pointless really ,so hopefully when fit we will see this big talent whu speak of! i think we still need three more players after last nites defending!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Imo, that would weaken the team because Racon/Mccormack are better players in midfield than Fry would be at left back.
  • His uncle is Stephen Fry the comedic intellectual and champion of Twitter, not a lot of people know that!

Not yet played for us so no one can judge him yet. Fry might be a better left back than Jackson.

I heard his cousin is Stir Fry (part Chinese).

Not sure which facts you mean Oggy - All i said is he didn't play for us last year which made him a pretty pointless loan signing (his fault or not) and so far hasn't played for us this season either...I actually hope he turns out to be as good as his reviews and plays a lot for us this season, Doc & Dailly can't play every game and I am hoping he is good enough to step up or play LB so Jackson can push into midfield.

Well that's what you said, Valleyman, "the most pointless loan player ever to come to Charlton last year".

Okay, he didn't play as it turned out - he came to us not match fit after recuperating from a bad injury.
And when he was deemed fit, he was the 6th loanee in the squad and could only be named in the matchday squad for the Swindon game once Akpo had signed permanently.

The reason Fry was signed on the last day of the loan window, was to cover at CB and LB in an emergency.
With nearly 2 months of the season remaining (including playoff games), and no further playersable to be brough into the club - Fry was our defensive insurance policy.

At LB Youga was injured, Basey was injured, Jacko had returned to Notts, and Borrowdale had no cover should he be injured or suspended.

With the games coming thick and fast from Easter to the end of the season, we were very thinly covered at CB, with Dailly, Llera and the semi-crippled Sam Sodje available (their cover was of course, Youga and Basey!).

With Llera being sent off against Swindon, if we had gone through to Wembley it was very likely that Fry would have made his Charlton debut at Wembley!

Okay, we got away without having to use him - but Parky said he would not have hesitated to use him if necessary.
And he didn't cost us a penny, as West Ham continued to pay his wages.

So pointless? I couldn't really agree with you mate - and said why.
Anyway, he's on board as cover once more, so Parky must have liked the look of him.

Do however agree with your point, "Doc & Dailly can't play every game and I am hoping he is good enough to step up or play LB so Jackson can push into midfield". I'd also like to see the positive and creative Jacko play CM if needed.

Phew! didn't mean to write this much (don't larf peeps!).
I think I'll make myself a nice cup of tea, dearie.
