AFKA's FIVER..........
1. Saturday was the 3rd successive year Charlton have beaten newly-promoted opponents in the season opener at The Valley. While the fixtures computer may be getting somewhat monotonous, it does appear to be offering us favourable starts to the season.
2. Saturday's Statbank average performance rating of 6.87 compares favourably to the 6.79 rating recorded in last season's opener vs Wycombe, though the 10 shots Charlton recorded on Saturday was down on the 17 recorded v Wycombe.
3. Inclusive of last season, Chris Solly has now recorded a top 3 ranked performance in 4 of his 6 scored appearances. Similarly Kyel Reid has now ranked top 3 in 9 of his 17 scored appearances.
4. Southampton may have lost their opener at home to Plymouth, but they registered more attempts on goal than any other League One team this weekend, 16 in total.
5. Jose Semedo was the only player sent off in League One, compared to four dismissals in the Championship.
WHAT THEY SAID.............
PARKY - "It's always good to get those three points on the board. During the game today I was more apprehensive than normal. We had so many new players and you're never quite sure how it is going to go. I thoroughly believe we are a team which will get better as the season goes along, but there were a lot of good signs today. Our first-half performance was good and in the second half we had to roll our sleeves up and show other characteristics.
"We said to the boys afterwards that it would have been nice to win 3-0 or 4-0 but at this early stage of the season it's a reminder of what it takes to win a game of football, how hard you have to work and how committed you have to be. In the dressing room afterwards the lads were out on their feet. The back four and everyone had given everything. Every win is hard earned; there is never an easy win.”
EDDIE HOWE - 'It was a game of two halves. In the first-half, we were slow out of the traps. We weren't brave in terms of getting on the ball, we were waiting for things to happen. We improved vastly in the second-half, our mentality had changed and were on the front foot.
'It's a baptism of fire, but what better way to start the season than against the best sides and to see how far we've come. The Valley is a tough place to go for any team, but can come out of it with some positives. '
WHAT WE SAID.........
It will take this new set of players a half dozen games to get familiar enough to show us what we really have. Therefore 3 points is a great start and there were lots of positives and only a couple of negs. Back five looked solid enough and nothing fancy which I liked. Midfield had a better balance than last season, Reid excellent, middle two dominant, Waggy not at his best and didn't threaten all game, but we have seen better from him. Liked Abbott a lot even though it looked like he could do with another few weeks of hard training. Akpo will be pushing Pawel for his place in the team, but today was a case of the top two picking themselves. Would expect Martin or A.N. Other to be PA's partner as we progress. McCormack's performance along with Solly proving that he is an able right back/midfielder were the highlights for me today, and pleased to see Dailly's reaction at the final whistle (he knew that the win today was well earned). - No.1 in South London
A solid performance with a load of new recruits on the first game of the season will do. Really impressed with Solly today, when we went down to 10 I expected him to be targeted but he was even more comfortable after that. Reid as well was very good and our main outlet - Hudson-son-son
Pleased with the points. Three points with 10 men is always a good achievement - Off It
Always nice to get a win under your belt and it lifts the pressure a bit, but I'm not getting carried away just yet. First half was something of a stroll and thought Bournemouth looked a poor side. Reidy was playing well and doing some damage and there were a few signs that things might gel eventually, as with last season though we didn't really make the dominance tell. Second half though we were sluggish and looked a bit complacent. I actually think Semedo's sending off did us a bit of a favour as it concentated minds and woke a few people up. - Exiled Addick
Just really pleased for Solly. Sometimes I've watched him and I worry about how the more direct players will trouble him. But having said that his attitude is absolutely superb, even when he's struggling he battles like a little bugger and then often shows he has a brain altering his game. - Colin Tat
