New faces on saturday

edited August 2010 in General Charlton
The new faces who played on saturday, all did reasonable well. McCormack seemed to step up from his pre-season performances and looked stronger. Abbot was the only one who looked a bit lost. Saw Ross Worner in the warm up - he looks very small and about 15! Posibility he will start tomorrow night, so will be a test for him.

  • personally i thought abbott done ok worked hard just didnt get the chances, think all of them looked good
  • Mccormack was excelent there was one tackle where he chased hard then slid in ala bobby more and came out with the ball reminded me a tad of kinsella which is good. Abbot looked ok but hard to judge when you've got 2 target men up front, think he will play better with a quicker partner. Francis brief introduction just didn't know how bloody tall he is very herminator!!! Reid was electric and is gona be a star. Doherty was solid as a rock and jackson looked very natural at lb although would like to see him play forward in midfield at some occasions. All in all from the new boys 8.5 out 10.
  • Once the new boys settle in I don't think we'll miss any of the players we let go, with the possible exception of Randolph or Bailey's goals, though I reckon Wagstaff and Reid may well chip in with a few to make up the defecit. Very good work by Parky, the squad is certainly no weaker than last season (IMO) and he must have trimmed a fair amount of money off the bill.

The best thing about having a new squad is the balance. No more fitting Bailey or Shelvey on the left, or leaving certain players out to fit others in. The versatile players we have can play comfortably in other positions, rather than central midfielders playing on the left who can't offer us any real width or pace.

One more striker in and we're much better off with Akpo, Abbott, new striker and Martin as another option than a year ago when we had Burton, McLeod and Dickson.

Listened to Charlton Live for a bit last night and they were talking about that. A year ago we had Semedo, Racon, Shelvey and Bailey and had to fit them in because they were among our best players as well as us having poor options up front.
  • Very impressed with them all.

I thought his first touch was absolutely appalling.

Maybe appalling is a bit harsh as he was definitely nowhere near as bad as McLeod at controlling the ball, but he certainly wasn't good. He did win a few headers though and i think it's fair to say his game is more about his aerial presence than ability on the floor.
  • are we slagging off abbott already after just ONE game!! beleave me he will come good he got the skill and goals in him just give him time to settle lads :)
  • Probs just nerves. He was eager to impress & i think he will score us alot of goals. What i liked about him was his work rate for such a big bloke. He chased down & wanted to win the ball back. Been a while since we had a striker like that

Maybe he will come good, i hope he does as well. But saying he's got a poor first touch is hardly laying into him is it?
  • I dont think Mccormack and semedo should play in the middle together both are too similar from what ive seen, you need racon in there for creativity and semedo allday long so no room for mccormack.

I agree with first couple of touches but after that seemed to hold up the ball well and didn't look bad on the ball, give him a few games and well see but i personally think he is a decent signing just need someone quick who also scores up with him(no offence to akpo as he done alright on saturday just think he should be back up)

I'm with you on this. First touch was not that good, as my brother pointed out he just did not look like a footballer. Just seemed a bit well clumsy looking, does that make sense?
  • I liked the look of McCormack, could possibly get sent off a few times as he seemed a little rash. But showed great determination and spirit which for me most of our team lacked last season.

    Good bit of business that!

Only one clip, but a few people were also talking about a flick or two in the Watford game. He seems to be a bit more than just a big lump to win headers. At least I don't think we can assume he is just a big target man based on one competitive game.
