  • Could this not have been added to the original Benson thread?.

Looks like a rehash of the quotes from the original refused bids.

I doubt Dagenham are playing hardball. More likely we are offering a pittence and hoping Benson will kick up a stink and demand a move.
  • Well, John Still their manager has said he can go.

But they want their valuation of the player met ...... or he stays.
  • Can see their point. He could be the biggest sale in their history and probably should be.

Yes, but we all know how that ends up working.

Benson wants to come to Charlton who, for all our recent turmoil, are probably still in top 30 clubs in the country in terms of recent history, fan base and....well, let's not talk about the money.

If D&R don't let him come then they end up with a stroppy and unhappy 30 year-old player on their hands (ring any bells Mr. Parker) who no longer wants to be at the club and could be a very disruptive influence.

That, I am afraid to say, is the way of the world, it worked against us with Parker and Reid but will probably work in our favor on this occasion.

Benson won't do that though. He says he owes the manager for plucking him out of non-league obscurity a couple of years ago and won't go down the road of transfer requests etc. We must be close to their valuation. You don't make an offer if you are miles apart unless you are stupid. If not let's amke a silly offer for Torres, he may be a Charlton fan for all we know.

The man is 30 years of age, this is his last chance to "make it" with a serious football club.

He would have to be Mahatma Ghandi, Desmond Tutu, Paul Kigale and St. Thomas the Apostle to stay at Dagenham over Charlton.

Nice sentiments but we all know that this game does not work that way any more, if it ever did at all.
  • Good points.

I'm thinking that althought their chairman says we are worlds apart, surely he wouldn't be suggesting that he would let him go if that was actually true.
  • Can't we just get him on loan, pay them a loan fee as usual, with an option to purchase and price agreed?

We can then see if he comes up to expectations and fits in.

I agree, we are still percieved as a big club (not top 10 big but big) and we are attractive to potential players on this basis.

unlikely. he's one of their best players, so i doubt they would go for such a deal. they're going to want as much money as they can in order to get in a suitable replacment.

  • I REALLY think we should drop the interest. Once you go back more thance once in a negotaitation, you've played your hand IMO.

Fair play to them for rejecting the offer, they're well within their rights and I really hope they survive in the league this year.
  • No comment from the man himself

Looks like he is coming i reckon from that

Worked for Man Utd when they signed Cantona from Leeds

Watford have just signed Troy Deeney from Walsall after having the first 4 bids rejected.
  • It seems like Parky really wants this fella...so we could end up with him. If he's going to be the only player that we seriously splash the cash on, then I hope the gamble pays off, as there are some less than flattering reports of him on here....
  • Was chatting to an ex-Daggers player who has played alongside Benson and watched him many times.

He felt that Benson would score goals for us. He's not super quick but fast enough, drifts away from defenders to find space and has that knack of getting on the end of knock downs and deflections in the box. Can create his own chances but if you get the ball to him in the box he will score according to this guy.
  • How long will he be prolific for though? He's 31 this year.

Sounds like both our current 1st choice strikers
  • Personally think this is now a non-runner.

Parky said in his last interview that we were looking at freebies and possibly a nominal fee. Daggers wont let him go for a nominal fee. Think we should move on.
