Nothing can go wrong now

edited August 2010 in General Charlton
In the spirit of 'new season optimism' and as an attempt to dispel the doom and gloom merchants, I propose a thread (which hopefully will become a 'Sticky' as the season unfolds) where we share reasons why everything will go Charlton's way.

Let me start with a snippet about the problems Bournemouth are facing as they board their ramshackle horse and cart ready to make the long trip up to London:

  • I tell you what... after reading that and we dont win tomorrow - lock the knives away!

why, we have only got one fit striker too. Well one fit striker who is any good that is.
  • They may only have one fit striker but the defence is mustard. This match has 0-0 written all over it :O (
  • very true large. Didnt think of that!
  • [cite]Posted By: LargeAddick[/cite]why, we have only got one fit striker too. Well one fit striker who is any good that is.

Okay, Sodje may not be our most talented player. But he is brave, hardworking and will score more goals than some people think. He has a specific role to play in the side as required, and that's why Parky brought him into the squad.

So why this unthinking diatribe to constantly rubbish the player?
  • Be fair Oggy, Akpoo is poo and he knows it, Parky knows and we know it. He's the weakest link imo but when we get the new forward in, I'll be confident. Abbott looks like he could create a goal out of nothing and he kind of needs to be able to playing for Charlton.

    2-0 win tomorrow :)
  • New season - new start.

I'm prepared to give everyone a fair crack of the whip & a chance to show what they can do.
  • Just want to check that Akpo Sodje is the player from our own team who we are going to slag off this season? Just want to make sure I get it right as I know that once we have actually played a few games there will be a few more and I want to make sure that when they are hammered Akpo isn't missed.

Always nice go be on a players back before the season has started.

A few more Charlton Life views re Akpo:

    I love our consistency!

I have no doubt that that statement is 100% true and accurate. Parky probably thought, I think Akpo is poo but I'll sign him anyway. Even in the warm-up, you can see Akpo repeating to himself "I am poo, I am poo, I am poo".

  • Akpo will do a job at this level - it won't be pretty but, as Ooh Aah would say, not much is in League One!

Point of order, please, lads and lasses.

This thread is not about slagging off Akpo ... it's about sharing reasons why everything will go Charlton's way this season (as I tried to illustrate with the Bournemouth example).

Let me try again with another:

If he'd come through the youth set up would you still be slagging him off Large?.

Give him a break FFS. He scored a few last year - including an absolute belter at Yeovil. If he can stay fit he will get 10-12 goals this season. As a back up striker that is fine by me.
  • And if it all goes pearshaped, we can point to this thread as the one where Dave Rudd put the mockers on us. "Nothing can go wrong now" is one of those phrases that's just tempting fate too much. (Superstitious? Me? Well, maybe a little)

    It won't go pear-shaped.

  • We're likely to have a mystery Dutch striker on the bench tomorrow. Holland just got to the World Cup Final and is the home of total football, so he's bound to be briliant.

Also, as far as I know, we have never lost to a team from the Bournemouth area at home on the first day of the season, so history is on our side.

That the sort of thing you're looking for Dave?

    Perfect.
  • Also, we are nailed-on certainties to win the Carling Cup as Shrewsbury can't take penalties.

You're dreaming Dave Rudd! As you can see above it doesn't take our fans long to start slagging off someone; looks like apko may get the booing this year then, pathetic, before he's even made an error or anything.

I hope our players don't read this shite, then again I suppose they don't have to they'll be hearing it from the hecklers in the crowd tomorrow.
  • First thing thats made me smile all day.....

  • Abbott is a 15+ man in our side
  • Because......According to Paddy the Pitch is the best it has ever been which will suit our passing style this season (Ooi you Stop laughing at the back)

Fans may be divided on Akpo and the number of goals he will score this season but, if we all get our replica shirts emblazoned with his full name - Idoro Akpoeyere Ujoma Sodje - the Club Superstore will rake in a small fortune.

Sufficient funds indeed to buy Paul Benson out of Dagenham & Redbridge, which will then relegate Akpo to the bench. So, it's in our own hands.

Sometimes you just have to think it through.
  • Sodje's gonna score tomorrow.

I just finished my pot of tea and it said so in the bottom: It's in the leaves he will score I tell thee... don't mock my words!
  • Red5 plans to have another pot of tea later today, so Akpo will probably score twice tomorrow.

Good news obviously, but personally I think I'd change my tea.

Possibly a bit left-field this one but if you believe the "Addicks" comes from Haddock theory then we are in for a bumpy ride this season but at least we aren't cod...

    Agreed, Chris.

It sounds like there are a few posters on here who can't wait to trash their own players.
As one of our players and no doubt a decent human being, why doesn't he deserve our support.....?

Akpo is on our side guys, he wears a red shirt with the Charlton badge on it.

    Brilliant!

Cherries on the other hand are in severe decline, with most being imported from Spain, Turkey and the USA.

    http://www.farminguk.com/news/Its-National-Cherry-Day!_18617.html

National Cherry Day was last month ... and girls use them for predicting who they will marry. This explains why you seldom find an unmarried tinker or tailor ... whereas thieves are almost universally sad bachelors who live in untidy, sometimes squalid, flats.
