CHARLTON’S playing squad is very different to the one which finished last season but Tim Breacker is using that as a positive ahead of the new League One campaign.
Only four of the side which started the Addicks’ last competitive game - the play-off semi-final penalty shoot-out defeat to Swindon in May - are still at The Valley.
The summer saw the departures of first-teamers Darren Randolph, Frazer Richardson, Sam Sodje, Lloyd Sam, Nicky Bailey and Deon Burton, while the loans of the likes of Gary Borrowdale and David Mooney came to an end.
But assistant manager Breacker and boss Phil Parkinson have been working overtime to bring in new recruits, with Gary Doherty, Alan McCormack, Johnnie Jackson, Kyel Reid, Simon Francis and Pawel Abbott added to the ranks.
And Breacker insists the turnaround in staff gives everyone at the club the opportunity to start afresh.
“There are a lot of different faces around the place now,” said Breacker. “When I came to the club a year ago there were a few players who didn’t really feature but they’ve moved on now. Sometimes it’s good to clear the decks and start with a blank canvas.
“We don’t have anyone here now who doesn’t want to be here. Those players who were happy to go have gone and hopefully we are bringing in the right people to replace them. We’re pleased with what we’ve done so far with the resources we’ve had available.
“We’ve still got work to do but I’ve been at clubs where there are unhappy players who can’t get into the team and I’ve been at places where there have been spaces in the squad. We’ve got those positions available and I think it’s better that way around, having people who want to be here, as that gives us healthy competition.
“Of course there’s no way we would have wanted to lose someone like Nicky Bailey, who was one of our best players and scored goals from midfield, but part of our job is to see who we can find out there to fill the gaps that we’ve got.
“Sometimes out of the adversity comes strength. All of the fans and players know the situation and they know we’re doing our utmost to give them a team they can be proud of, especially in terms of workrate and attitude."

Agree, i am really looking froward to Saturday this week has dragged.
For this reason, I'll go along with what Breaker is saying.
Let's hope we are gonna get a TEAM to be proud of this year!
I don't really think that's what Breacker meant ........ more, the players who couldn't get in the side, were unhappy here or had bad attitude. Maybe he was referring to Moo2, Dickson, McLeod, etc or any players with stinking thinking?
