Charltons worst league position

edited August 2010 in General Charlton
when we have discussions about Parky I keep reading that as he did not get us back up last season he has kept us in this 3rd tier longer than any one else and that makes him our worst ever manager . Surely this is wrong. Long ago In my drunken mispent youth I seem to remember us being relegated to Div 3 in 1972 and not going back up until 1975. Can any one confirm this

Sent down by Blackpool in 1972 and once again in 2009 to division 3.Not the worst league position that was back in
73-74 when we finished 14th in div 3.So parky has a little way to go yet,if we finish below 14th this year he will hold this record.Staying that we did bounce back from our all time low the following season when we got promoted in 74-75.

And relegated in 79-80, bouncing straight back.
Worst ever position was pre-war, 1925-26, 21st in Division 3 (South)

Did we have to apply for re-election that year ....?

But remember, we were a very young club, with only 4 years League experience back then.

Yes, the only time we've ever had to apply for re-election according to Mr Cameron.

Ask Oggy Red or myself this was Charltons worst season with current set up of league that we can remember.Had you come along to Charlton one season before you did i think you would agree also.
Good you know your history about Charlton and with a name like that you have seen many agame thats for sure. Was at Fulham when dear old Lawrie played his first game for Charlton 1-1 draw.first game of season and he scored.

When did we finish 2nd in the first division? I'm guessing it was less than 20 years after our lowest ever finish.

1936-1937. We finished just one point behind Champions Manchester City.

What made it all the more remarkable was that it was our first season ever in the top flight, having just been promoted twice in consecutive seasons from the Third Division South.

Jimmy Seed was the legend that created those stunningly successful seasons.

Charlton were the very first team to climb from Third Division to the First, in successive seasons - a record in itself that stood for more than 30 years.

Even when QPR emulated that in 1966-67, 67-68, 68-69 they were relegated out of sight in their top flight season, including an 8-0 drubbing by Matt Busby's Man Utd.

So for Charlton to actually finish 2nd in their first top flight season was a magnificent achievement, never bettered.

    EDIT: I should add that in 1937-38, Charlton finished 4th;
and in 1938-39, Charlton finished 3rd.

And remember, Jimmy Seed achieved all that with basically the same side he built in the Third Division South!
If it hadn't been stopped by outbreak of World War II, that team may truly have established Charlton amongst the elite.

11 years, not bad! Shame about the Germans ruining the momentum.

Actually, when Ipswich got promoted to the First Division for first time in 1961 they won the First Division title at the first attempt...

Strange thing was, they were relegated two years later...

I think it's Charlton's record of going from Div 3 to 2nd in league in consecutive that hasn't been bettered.

    Cheers, Lawrie ....... exactly!

Ipswich were not promoted in consecutive seasons from the Third Division to the top flight,
although not knocking their magnificent achievement of winning the title in their first top flight season.

Incidentally, Sir Alf Ramsay was manager of that Ipswich title winning side, and his skipper was Andy Nelson ......later to become Charlton manager for nearly 6 years in the 70s.

Didn't Brian Clough also win the League title by 7 points clear in Nottingham Forest's first season after promotion, then the very next season won the European Cup? Plus 2 consecutive League Cup victories at the same time.

And won the European Cup the next season also!
    Fantastic achievement.

Interesting link you posted there , Oohaah ...... all the League tables foer season 1977-78.

See Bristol City were a top flight club, Millwall finished above Charlton on goal difference, Portsmouth relegated to the 4th Division, and Swansea City having finished in the 4th Division promotion places were en route for the top flight Division 1 in just 4 seasons! Later emulated by Watford, Fulham and Hull, at least.

the early seventies and 79/80, when we finished bottom of division 2, were just as bad if not worse than the last couple of seasons.

The difference is that back then we knew no better and had not had the fortune of Premiership football.

last season was our 3rd lowest finish in the last 75 years (before that it was regionalised division 3 south).

in the two worse seasons 72-3 and 73-4 palace got relegated from top tier to the third tier while millwall were mid table second tier ... unlike last season

You are spot on, Len. Maybe, we need to go down one more division, so that we can appreciate "the high life" when we get back to League 1.

An update to this. Is our 2-0 loss to Reading on 11 Feb 2024 our club’s new all time nadir? And in terms of lowest position at any point in the second half of a season.

This assuming Nathan Jones now has us on the up.

I know it was only two points for a win in those days, but I hadn't appreciated what a tight division it was. Three wins and we would have been well up the table.

It wasn't too difficult to get re-elected because no other clubs applied to join the Football League in 1926
