James Mulley - trialist

edited July 2010 in General Charlton
All other trialists have a thread and he doesn't
Surprising really because he looked pretty good last night as an attacking midfielder. Looked eager to impress and looked athletic and quick too
I understand he did ok again Afc Dons too

Anyone know much about him?

  • A quick google reveals that he's on the books at Hayes and Yeading, played 36 times last season for them scoring twice.

Second story on google is about another James Mulley who it appears is deceased. Are you sure you saw him running about?

He was living in Newcastle and only 89, when he died.

That's because he is an attacking midfielder - even though he played RB against Wimbledon on Saturday!

He's 21, highly rated at Hayes & Yeading ........and been out of contract with them for a whole year!
Been playing all that time without a contract.
  • Looked decent, it's not ideal for him being moved around so much, has already played right back, right midfield and up front.

Seems he is actually a central midfielder, played without a contract at Hayes and is 21.

Not sure where he'd fit in, but might be something there. Looked better than Sawyer.

Mulley has showed great enthusiasm and hunger to play.
    Love his attitude.

There's one lad desperate to show he can cut it at a much higher level.

As usual couldn't agree more with Oggy. He struck me as a kid wanting to take this opportunity with both hands
  • young, versatile, looks eager to prove himself. definitely worth a contract, if only a one year deal
  • as he is under 24 wouldn't we have to pay a 'development' fee ? Shouldn't we be signing up Basey first ? If not we might as well scrap the youth system.
  • No development fee - he's not contracted to anyone

nor is Grant Basey and nor was Randolph and we only didn't get a fee for him because he went abroad. Although Mulley is out of contract Hayes & Yeading still hold his registration.

  • True - didn't realise that.

Either way it wouldn't be a great deal of money and he certainly looks worth at least another look
  • I thought this kid looked really sharp at the Welling game, should have scored with his chance but fantastic control & turn to get into the position, not sure anyone else on the pitch would have created the chance.

Very impressed, though not sure why he's being moved around the pitch so much.

At a guess we're trying to see if he can be a part of our new TOTAL FOOTBALL policy

or maybe just to gauge if he is actually useful in more than one position - which it seems he is
  • If signed, he'd certainly be a 'wild card' addition to the squad.

As far as I know, he's not come through the youth team of a League club but nevertheless has been showing a very dedicated and professional approach. He's 21, so providing his basic footballing ability is up to scratch (which it seems to be), then with the attitude he's displayed so far he could yet make it in League One.

I wonder how he came to the club's attention? Something to do with Parky's Reading days and he remembered a young schoolboy on trial?

our fabled scouting network of course. Can't you for once give credit to Phil Chapple for spotting talent ? ;-)
  • Can we afford his wages?

Not sure it's always a given. We didn't get anything for Wright because we released him.

I think (well Football Manager says) that clubs get the 'developmental fee' as long as they ofer the out of contract player another deal at equal or greater terms than their expired deal. If you don't do that then I think they're deemed to have been released and free to move clubs without a fee being involved.
  • I can't put my finger on why but I think he has a future in the game. I know its easy to get carried away after a half against Welling but he really impressed me with his eagerness to get on the ball and trying to bring players into the game. All too often a trialist tries too hard to show what they can do rather than play their normal game - for me Mulley seemed to be pretty relaxed about it all and I think that showed.

He wasn't perfect but i reckon there's a player in there that just needs a bit of nurturing.

When I compare him to Sawyer on the wing - he seemed to be out of his depth, trying too hard and when things didn't go his way he lambasted the linesman. Not really what you want to see from a trialist. not me anyway
  • agree Swisdom. Definatley got something. Would be cheap wages wise so might be worth a gamble on a years contract.

Can't be any worse than Dicko, Sinclair or Fleets and would probably welcome a £750 - 1k a week contract in the current climate.

    That's still £35k - £50k a year. Not bad wages for a 21 year old!
  • thats my point Oggy. Good money for him - relatively cheap for Charlton and if he turns out to be worth £50-100k then what have we lost
  • Re-signed for Hayes and Yeading after missing out on a deal after trials at us and Dagenham.
  • Looked decent but doesn't really fit in anywhere. Won't be surprised if he leaves them for a bigger club eventually.
  • I honestly though he'd be worth a punt but in Parky I trust
  • Signed for Chelmsford this week

Really surprised he's now blue square south - thought he looked pretty decent
  • To be honest it probably shows what a waste of time having him around for so long in pre-season was if that's his level
