Black September - 25th anniversary

This year will be the 25th anniversary of the "last game at The Valley" - against Stoke City, on September 21st, 1985.

I don't think we should let this go by unmarked, but I'm not sure what we should do to "celebrate" it either.

The nearest home game is D&R on September 25th. Whatever it is, perhaps we should give out leaflets announcing it at the Notts County game a fortnight earlier?!

  • Have a floodlight climbing contest?
  • Can we invade the pitch after the game and dig it up?
  • Maybe some get the players and manager back for the game
  • What was the team that day?

You and I could wait behind for an hour, then get the 89 bus back to Welling?
  • be nice to playing stoke again...

Celebrate the return by all means but I'd rather forget that terrible day when we left.

I couldn't even face going to the game, I was in denial.

Hmmm, always fancied Egypt : )
  • I think it should be remembered (but maybe not celebrated) even if it's just an extended article in the programme.

Despite all that's gone on in the last couple of years, we've still got a fantastic ground to be proud of and although times are bad at the moment, they're not that effin bad.

And play them instead of our current 1st team?

  • I think you should all wear mullet wigs. The one Tavern is sporting on the Centenary DVD is a shocker.

I'm on that too (at half time) I bet his mullet wasn't as shocking as mine, I had the back of it permed!! I was also skinny then so I'm the only one who can recognise me!!!
  • We could order a job lot from here.

  • KING MULLET:
  • From what I recall it was packed. Nicky Johns made an unbelievable save from Keith Birtschin to keep the score at 0-0 late on & Amos & the Turnstile bloke scored in a 2-0 win. Remember digging up some turf to take home after the game. Also the protest at the end of the game with a lot of venom directed at the old West Stand although for the life of me not sure if it was directed at any one person or just the board in general.
  • I can remember little about the day other than piling on the pitch at the end. Remember winning 2-0 with a lateish second that sealed it. The half time protest and all that followed seemed very half hearted, even to me who thought it would never be allowed to happen. Remember sitting in the old west stand after our pitch invasion following the game, which was when it hit home and felt like we may never see the ground again. But the elation of playing at selhurst soon after made me forget the sad times, or was it the drink, one or the other.

Still don't believe dave mehmets description of himself back then, I could understand his fashion faux pas of the mullet, but skinny, no way.
