World Cup 2010: England climb Fifa world rankings


England have risen one place in Fifa's official world rankings from eighth to seventh, despite their poor showing at the recent World Cup in South Africa.

Fabio Capello's side were knocked out of the tournament in the last 16 after a 4-1 defeat by Germany, who have gone up two positions to fourth.

World Cup winners Spain have replaced Brazil as the top-ranked side.

Meanwhile, World Cup finalists the Netherlands have risen two places to second, Brazil are down to third place.

    They normally get the 1st place right then anything below that is just nonsense.

    Where are Italy and France who both failed to get out of the group stages?

    At least we made the KO stages and have had a decent last year - it was only at the WC itself that it went pards shaped.

    The rankings are based on the last four years, so now that the last world cup, 2006, is ignored Italy and France, who were shocking this time around, have lost the benefit they had of making the final four years ago.

    We did qualify for the World Cup with a lot of wins, and as we are in Europe, which has a better weighting, those qualifying games are going to hold us up there for a year or two, then we will start replacing the Maclaren years with, hopefully, wins.

    Thus I would expect us to be in the top 8 for a while to come - despite being totally unable to perform thus summer.
