  • came in late so probably not quite up to it yet, maybe Tuesday. Can only assume that McCormack has kept fitter over the summer. Will be interesting to see who plays the other 45 minutes in goal.
  • Its interesting because McCormack said this:
"I got an insect bite on my ankle last Friday, though. I've never had a reaction before but it went up like a balloon so I hadn't done anything for four days before arriving here.

"I might be a few days behind the lads, but I feel I'm there or thereabouts. A few good hard sessions and I won't be too far away.
  • Good to see Cousins will get a chance, will be interesting to see where he plays.
  • reckon he'll be tried out at right-back to see if he's ready to be back-up for solly
  • I just don't think 16 year olds should be playing adult football. He is a brilliant player - against Chelsea he was the best player on the pitch despite being two years younger and the Chelsea team being a different class to ours.

It just doesn't mke a difference to me, the adult game is about more than skill and I fear for his long term developement if he is put out there too early.
  • it's only half a pre-season friendly and an early one at that.

Jon Jo was playing league games at the same age.

Don't want to rush anyone in until ready but if he's good enough he's old enough.

This is where I disagree, good enough is not old enough.

And its Jonjo not Jon Jo ;-)
  • well parky thinks hes good enough and old enough to play in a friendly at 16.

At the moment that is all it is. if he is first choice CH then you might have a point.
  • Kedwell is a bit of an old school forward. If Cousins comes up against him it could be a baptism of fire.......

Would you have kept Shelvey away from the first team until he was 18/19?

I'd imagine most if not all players will play half a game. Stebo's probably right about him being used at right back.

Exaclty the issue. Jonjo was put in the team early and ended up being dropped most of last season. Who can say if he had started later would he have been a better player last season?

Waggy got put in young and Parky said it took him nearly two years to get over being put in to early.

A lot of famous players who start their careers early end up with shorter careers, is this a result or a coincedence?
  • but this is only half a friendly NOT being a regular first teamer.

You could make a counter arguement that players like Sam didnt start early enough and that held them back.
  • got to agree with henry here.. it's only a pre-season friendly against non-league opposition and i doubt he'll play the whole match anyway. i'm sure he's very excited to be making a senior appearance so why not give the guy a go? :)

it's strange that players only a few weeks older than me are starting to break through into professional football now.. haha
  • Jake, you're lucky.

Wait till the managers are younger that you!!
  • Safer for a 16year old to play in a pro pre season friendly than the thousands of 16 year olds that turn out each week for the sunday morning hackathons in random pub leagues.

Old enough to join the army at that age im sure a half hour kickabout in surrey isnt gonna harm the poor lamb too much.
  • Kedwell is a quality centre forward for the level he is at. Not a dirty player though in a million years

    Swears a lot though
  • It is a fact when you first play against more senior level players as a youngster there is a learning curv. It hits home immediately and you have to go through it sometime. My experience is that you are better doing it at 16 in friendlies, games that don't matter. The quicker you come up against a senior player the better. Cousins like most players will soon realise how naive he might be and think, that guy is not going to get away with that next time and you learn there is more to the senior game than what you are going to do with the ball.
  • IMO it's exactly the right game to get a 16 year old involved. He's only going to play a half, same as everybody else.

As Rodders said, a half an hour kickabout where everyone is playing half paced gently breaks him into a 1st team match - it's really not even that, actually just a squad run out for both teams.

I do agree with Harveys Trainer's point however, that 16 year olds shouldn't generally play regular competitive 1st team games - though no real harm blooding them for an occasional last 10 mins or so. That gives them valuable 1st team experience getting used to the big match pressure, without putting too much responsibility on young shoulders.

Jonjo was a bit of an exception in some ways, because he was more physically mature for his age than most 16 year olds - but the fact that he played a string of games very well then lost his way a little (and his regular place) might just indicate that perhaps a little too much can easily be expected.

The way Curbs held back Scott Parker is possibly a case in point - Parker was given occasional games and cameo sub appearances but he wasn't allowed a regular run in the side until he was 20 - and proved he was ready.

Cousins did fine today, played at centre back alongside Mambo. Oggy was right, was an ideal game to play him in. Half a friendly is very different even starting a cup game (eg Wagstaff home to Yeovil a few years ago when he wasn't ready). I'd trust Parky and everyone else involved to judge whether a 16 year old is ready to play in a few friendlies. He's already captained his country at u16 level last year while playing on TV, and already been offered a pro contract at 17, they rate him highly and think he's ready to handle playing in a few friendlies. I expect the closest he'll get to the first team once the season starts is the bench for the Carling Cup and JPT, unless he really does well in pre-season.

He's a roofless tackler, but I wouldn't slate him for that.
