Will We Forever Rue The Day That We Forced Curbishley Out?

Although there wasn't a strong influence for him to leave, many fans wanted Curbishley gone after years of boring football and constant mid-table finishes and wanted more excitement. Well I believe we certainly got what we wished for but rather than the excitement we wanted of challenging for Europe we now find ourselves battling for promotion from the third tier of English football. At the same time Curbishley's career hasn't exactly improved and he has been in a mangerial exile for nearly two years, although I think the past few years have been to some extent enjoyable at times it doesn't beat having Premiership football at The Valley week-in, week-out and I wonder when are we going to get it back?

  • there was a special set of circumstances that lead to curbs and charlton together having a good run...exile, the valley party, the fans, murray and his fellow board members, building a team, not a bunch of players, the riding of the crest of the wave of emotion...by the time curbs left we'd used it up and were running on empty...time's ripe for a new set of circumstances to come together and setting off from the position we are now is just about perfect for it...let the good times roll...
  • Whoever that minority of "fans" were that wanted him out probably deserted long ago.
  • His last season was pretty poor, an amazing start but if we didn't pick up the points we did for those 1st 7 games, we could easily have gone down. I wouldn't say his heart wasn't in it, but it seemed evident he wanted to move on and even if he stayed another season it seemed likely we could have gone down. Was always a regret when you hear of fans who wanted him to go, I always wanted him to stay even though I was having doubts over his last season in charge, but I have to admit I was curious as to what Charlton would be like post Curbs (when he was in charge).
  • Not another thread about Curbs leaving...

He didn't want to sign a new contract and clearly needed a new challenge, however Curbs going wasn't the problem, it was the guy who replaced him who was.
  • jesus, he went years ago, it's over and done with...........been done to death more times on here than I care to remember.

bout time we all got over it I think and moved on...
  • change the record .................................
  • Done to death. Now beyond boring. F**k the torpedo, nuke please.
  • BOR-ING!

  • Funny how you are all fed up with reading about it but all bothered to look at the thread and then post on it.
  • I know talking about Curbishley is a bit old but I got given this article to write I think mainly to link with that fact that he is reportedly on the Fulham shortlist but doesn't believe he will get it because he has been out of work for so long since the West Ham fiasco. Anyway despite it being a bit old I would appreciate any feedback on the acutal article itself cheers.
  • Your article suggests that the money Dowie was given was for a push for Europe. In actual fact Dowie given the next season's money just to keep us in the Premier League.

This was exactly how Richard Murray described it at the time, and has done so many tines since.

The article comes across as though it was the gamble for Europe that caused the problems, where as it was because the board knew that exactly what has happened was a possibility, even though they thought not very likely, that tempted them to spending the following season's money in advance. Something that they have now done four years on the trot.

I would also go as far as to say that Curbishley was never forced out of Charlton. There was never a feeling of that at the time, and both sides have confirmed many times since that he went because he was 'bored' of it all. He was teased by the England job and within a of months of his interview(s) he decided that he no longer wanted to be our Manager.

So if you really want some feedback for your article I, personally, think it's rubbish. Sorry, but it looks like it was written with a 'killer headline' that puts forward a scenario that just didn't exist.

The truth is that no one knows what would have happened if Curbishley had stayed, but, typically, when any established Premier League team gets relegated it either comes back quickly, or it implodes, we weren't the first and I doubt we will be the last.
  • no wasn't forced out - he wouldn't commit to us long term - ENd Of . I was a big fan but but if he wouldn;t commit Murray did the right thing

Curbs had his time with us and left at the right time. Before you start to think I was one of those fans that wanted him out you are wrong because I started going to see Charlton 93/94 season so I only ever got used to Curbs and he made me spoilt as a Charlton fan in a brilliant way. I was sad when Curbs left but at the same time I was looking forward to a new era.

The last 2 years under Curbs did start to go downhill slightly as we spent more than what we did on players like Rommadual and Jeffers and they were complete flops. It was also getting frustrating the last 8 games as before we was 8th and pushing for Europe then we messed it up as the 40 point target was reached so ambition was leaking slightly I thought.

I think the board's biggest mistake was to appoint Dowie because I felt they wanted to get one over Simon Jordon as well as thinking he was the right man for the job, which has messed us up completly. I don't think Curbs leaving was the downhill.

  • Probably yes.
  • We didn't force Curbishely out. End of story.
  • If you keep picking at a wound it never heals - and eventually you will die.
  • How boring is this, it's done, dusted and part of our history! How about we forget all this stuff that we can't change Nd focus our energy on supporting the team/management that and here and apart of our club NOW!!

well said that man but i would rather slate parky ;-)

Now why would you want to go and do something like that ;-)
  • In a word, yes.

But there's not a lot we can do about it now, is there?

    Time to move on.

As has also been said - the tossers that called for his head have probably stopped 'supporting' Charlton by now....

    Anyway..............SINK!

Fair enough I'll take that on the chin, for your information though however I didn't pick the article or the headline but it's what I was given. I know it's a bit of a dated story but I think I was given it more to tie in with Curbs recent Fulham link. If you notice in the article there's no real mention of fans forcing Curbishley out, just that they were starting to become a bit disillusioned.

    NO
  • Please care to elaborate....
  • A very fair assessment of what happened and where we are now.

Sadly some people like to rewrite history / enter a state of denial.

The FACTS are that, as you say, whilst most fans appreciated and acknowledged Curb's achievements a vocal minority wanted him out because of boring, mid table football, can't manage big players, taken us as far as he can, blah, blah.

The archives of Netaddicks, 606 website and radio programme, Talksport 505 phone in etc, etc bear that out.
  • He never won the Premiership so he had to go.
