Fair play to the journo in question for doing his job, just winds me up the only official outlet we now have as fans for enhanced information / speculation is a publication we historically, and always will, be third fiddle on.
[cite]Posted By: mart77[/cite]Never really liked it, as it's a millwall rag but even more annoyed that they have an advert selling millwall tickets with every one of our stories!
May be something small but it really grated me!
I utterly hate this crap paper. I once sent them a letter slating them for their totally biased 'coverage', to be fair they did print it but predictably the editor emphatically denied it. I sent a response saying that he was talking nonsense but that was the last I heard of it. Once again and with gusto I will state- THE SOUTH LONDON PRESS IS UTTERLY BIASED TOWARDS MILLWALL IT IS FRANKLY RIDICULOUS. They can deny all they like but we all know it's true!!
The South London Press is the local paper for Lambeth and Southwark, and to a lesser extent Lewisham and Wandsworth. If you glance through it news pages you will see that. It is not a local paper for Greenwich borough and does not carry stories about Greenwich or the outer boroughs, even though it is sold there.
Given that we have few supporters in Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth and few of its core readership are Charlton fans, it's hardly surprising it is focused on Millwall to the exclusion of Charlton.

I think it goes, Millwall, Palace, AFC Wimbledon and then us.
You've already got the News Shopper in Greenwich, the SLP-run Mercury and then there is the council propaganda sheet Greenwich Time so it isn't as if there are no local papers covering the borough.
Given that The South London Press covers only set areas of South London then perhaps it's time for the paper to change its name from it's present moniker to something that is a bit more descriptive of the area it is aimed at The Lambeth and Southwark Times perhaps?? Have never read any of the local 'stories' in the 'paper'- never interested enough despite having lived in the area it is fixated with for many years but have given the sport coverage over the years the odd glance and it's not great. Even in the pre web era it was never essential reading.
we are South East London and I doubt much of our support comes from South London.
Having said that I did a couple of exams recently in the designated "South East London" exam centre and one was in Brixton and the other in Balham (it wasnt a geography exam obviously)

If it wasn't called "South London," and was called something more local to its real subscription base, it wouldn't go up so many people's noses that it doesn't really cover Charlton Athletic or Greenwich borough other than at a cursory level.
But from a marketing/advertising view, it is a smart name for the paper to have.

Same as when the now defunct London Lite and London Papers spent more focus on the sky 4. Man utd and Liverpool would get a 2 page spread if Ferguson was caught blowing his nose or Rafa claimed he preferred M&S to waitrose yet Charlton, Palace or Millwall could win 4-0 (poetic licence) and wouldnt get a mention.
The SLP has never really covered much beyond Deptford - Greenwich and beyond used to be covered by others.
Historically, the paid-for papers in Greenwich were the Mercury (Lewisham/Greenwich) and the Kentish Independent (Greenwich/Bexley). The KI went nearly 30 years ago, the Mercury went free in the 80s and has suffered a death by a thousand cuts and is now just a weedy, poorly distributed arm of the SLP. Shame, because its news reporters are pretty damn good, but they now have to share a newsdesk with a free title for Streatham and Wimbledon.
The News Shopper only extended into Greenwich (and Lewisham) in the late 80s/early 90s, and IMHO have never really quite got to grips with the area - for example, it moans now (rightly) about Greenwich Council having a weekly propaganda paper, but doesn't up its game in news coverage to compete.
Unfortunately, because all the big newspaper groups milked local papers dry when the going was good, they're now in a pickle because the arse has fallen out of the classified ad market (and councils don't advertise with them any more). It's a sorry state of affairs all round.
(Greenwich borough is also covered by the Bexley Times, which is slightly odd as nobody buys it or has even heard of it here.)
As a rant.... very good assessment Inspector..... You of course could have added that the bbc has not helped . you may as well everyone in local papers does......
As you say, they are also with the odd exception rather tired, and need both a redesign and a new editorial tenplate.
The Mercury and KI in my youth were great examples of local papers, campaigning, and delivering relevent local news, and topical events, , and Kevin Nolan was always worth a read even if you disagreed with him!
The Newshopper, was a great free sheet, (not even delived in Bexley Village the past two years,) the classified has become very weak.
I never really read the SLP, as I regarded it as covering Bermondsey/Peckham and Millwall football coverage. Frankly no interesst in the places, and even less in the team!
Bexley Times, only good for arse wiping I am afraid, as it is so full of shit!. Terrible excuse for a newspaper!
Having worked on national newspapers and magazines for a number of years it is a great shame that they have fallen on bad times........ The age of instant news, internet and specialist publications have given them a real kicking. Bit like local radio, I welcome a strong and viable newspaper and radio station, important for community and cultural reasons, part of which is coverage of football!
Hope that one returns some day, but doubt it........
Unfortunately the day local radio returns to South East London is going to be a long way away.
Ofcom invited applications for the 106.8 and 107.3 licences but neither were filled. Echo Radio went for the 106.8 licence (Old Millennium/TimeFM) but were knocked back. So no chance of anything on our airwaves soon.
That is why you should cherish what you have, and new and bigger is not always the best solution, something that is true of the Charlton coverage on 'local radio' as of late, but then I am talking to the 'converted'
There is no agreement between rival papers SE10, written or otherwise. I go by priorities in terms of the area covered and Charlton Athletic is the biggest one as far as News Shopper is concerned.

Not sure that is true about the late 80s thing as I grew up in Lewisham in that decade and always seemed to remember the Shopper being delivered.
Never liked the SLP and always thought it's name nowhere near accurately described it's coverage.
....But then again more accurately than the Mercury i suppose!
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]When I was a lad, the News Shopper was the first freebie newspaper - and only delivered back then around the Orpington area, where it was based.
The Kentish Independent was king!
When you was a Lad they still had Town Criers shouting out the News.....

SLP - Millwall
News Shopper & Mercury - CAFC
Croydon Advertiser & The Beano - Palarse.

Used to love that paper as a lad.
Is Peter Burrowes still alive?

A common complaint ie the lack of deliveries. Not many people want to be paperboys these days is probably the answer.
Scoop is still alive and kickin', living on the South Coast and still turns up at The Valley, last I heard.
Airman Brown could provide a more concise update of one Charlton's more, errrrrrr, legendary characters.
....But then again more accurately than the Mercury i suppose!
However, the SLP website does have a Charlton page which is usually ahead of the OS and is usually fairly accurate.

Of course, Moggy.
You'll remember those days well!
;o)
Ha ha.......Which says it all!
Hmm.
Do please spill the beans
