Sodje to Greece? Parky trying to get Dailly to sign?

CHRISTIAN Dailly is due to return to Charlton next week and could yet agree a deal to stay with the club.

The 36-year-old centre-back is out of contract but has been told he is welcome back at the Addicks’ New Eltham training base and he is expected to report for talks with manager Phil Parkinson following the first pre-season friendly against AFC Wimbledon this weekend.

“I would like Christian to stay and we’re working hard to make that happen,” said Parkinson.

Dailly won the club’s Player of the Year award last season and formed a solid partnership with Sam Sodje.

However, it looks unlikely that the duo will play together again in SE7 - the South London Press understands that Sodje could be set for a move to Greece.

  • Strange Sodje is chasing the dollar (is there any other reason to go play in Greece?)
I thought he'd stay and play with his brother

Good news about Christian - but why was he granted an extra week off?
  • He doesn't work for us at the moment - he can have as long off as he likes!

    beat me to it
  • Interestingly, i heard last week that Gary Doherty was set to sign for a Greek side this week (something Thessaloniki), but the deal collapsed (with a rumour attached that he had failed a medical).

Don't know how much weight of truth can be attached to it, but will be interesting if Sodje ends up there.
  • Tell me more, tell me more.....
  • Sodje needs the dollar as he's knees wont last much longer
  • Not bothered about Sodje, Dailly is definitely the priority. Am pretty sure we can get someone cheaper than Sodje who may not be quite as good in the air, but will be better in other ways. Like standing in the right place. And not being red carded twice a season.
  • Sodje's main problem along with his temper is his knee

Beat me to it, Old Bloke.

And I don't blame him. With dodgy knees, he's going to try and get another contract wherever he can, while he can.
  • What exactly is wrong with Sodje's knee? Is it both knees? Were some of the games he missed last season due to problems with his knee(s)?

We did sign Doherty ....... and we've still got Mad Miguel.

His knees are where he keeps his judgement, Scoh.

No, due to red cards. See above.
  • Doherty, being a Ginger, wouldn't wanna go to Greece to play. He'd roast in an hour
  • Chilvers hasn't signed for anyone else yet.

Actually a defender that can play right back or centre back might be more likely than an out and out right back. Solly could still get a chance, but we'd have that experienced player to give him proper competition.
  • Still better to sign specialist players and play them in their natural positions though, Scoh.

Getting Dailly back would be major - and Chilvers, dependable CB with solid Championship experience behind him, could be a major plus.
  • Not sure what sort of deal Sam will be able to negotiate in Greece given the financial state of the place.

I wonder whether we were reluctant to offer him a deal if his knees are shot. I've not read he turned us down anywhere.

I wish him luck where ever he ends up. He's the kind of player you can't help but like.

How could I forget Mr Llera? Sorry Miguel.

We definitely need 3 senior centre backs minimum + Mambo though.

I like Big Mig gives his all and he does a job at this level.
  • last year Parky said he wanted three senior cb's and a utility player .

How i interpreted that was we were one short last season. With only Sodje and Llera as cb's and Dailly as a utility player.

So Sodje out Doherty in leaves space for Chilvers / Fortune at least , if Llera went we could have both or Chilvers as a Richardson replacement.

I'd love to see both sign.

  • Isn't Mambo going off on a season long loan somewhere? Miguel, Dailly, Doc and Chilvers would be nice!

AFC Wimbledon are interested, but then like us they've got several trialists playing on Saturday. They might not need him. Or he might impress against them and they try and get it sorted quickly.

They also want Stavrinou, but Parky wants to see how they do for us in pre-season.
  • Has it been confirmed that Fortune is training with us? Might be a very useful addition to us.
  • i would like to see both Dailly and Sodje stay, but i cant see it happening. Id prefer Sodje over Dailley because Sodje brings pace and power to an aging back line.
  • In al honesty and I dont mean this as a wind up but how hard can it be to get a League 1 player to sign another year who is out of contract at 36 byears old?

Surely it should be 'this is what we can afford, take it or leave it' and his response is 'Yes ok' or 'no thanks I'm afraid'

Its not like the premiership days were there are add ons, boot deals, sponsorship tie inns, clauses in contracts

Get on with it or move on?????? You've had 2 months to sort it out.

Apart from a couple of the young pros no doubt signed on small contracts, notice how the club hadn't signed ANYONE until players had been sold and the money safely in the bank?

It was also reported on the OS, that playing budget wasn't finalised by the Board until this week.
So how are new deals to be offered and players signed until Parky gets the nod from the Board?

And now that's happened finally. This week.

It appears to be human nature to indulge in brinkmanship when it comes to contracts.

The b****** who lower their offer on the day you are meant to exchange contracts on a house for instance.

They gamble that your need to move outweighs the annoyance factor of their mucking you about and that you will cut your nose off to spite your face re the new place if you turn them down.

Dailly was fans player of the year. He might think he is worth a little more than he has been offered. Equally the Club might be trying it on.

    Who knows?

He might just be busy decorating this week or taking the kids to the park. Perhaps this week, 'Er indoors is the boss, not Parky.

I'm sure there must have already been some preliminary chat - but maybe Parky has had his hands tied until players sold, money in the bank and playing budget agreed by the Board?

That's since been done - and now the time has come to sort out new contracts both for new and existing players. Hence the signing of 3 new players in as many days.
  • Really hope we keep Dailly, was fantastic last year and certainly has another year left in him if not more at League 1 level. Deserved his Player of the Year.

As for Sodje, although I do like the guy, he can be a liability and 14 career red cards is far too many. He massively let us down against Swindon on boxing day and had quite a few stinkers. One Sodje is probably enough anyway.

one Sodje is definately more than enough, especially the one we have been left with.
