Simon Francis - Southend

edited July 2010 in General Charlton
someone mentioned him in another thread, can't find it, as being a decent right back and was their player of the year last season. Well he's just been released from his contract by Southend. Can see a pattern emerging here, McCormack, Jackson, Francis ? ......

  • He's not bad but is a right back.

Im told when he's good he's very very good but when he's bad he's shocking

Tall fella I believe - takes a nice dead ball too

don't we need a right back then ?
  • I remember him being roasted time and time again in the second half by Reid and Jackson at Roots Hall.
  • But he had Scannell or nothing infront of him they were down to 10 men....
  • as far as I can see at the end of May Brentford had a 150k offer for him accepted by Southend but he couldn't agree personal terms with Brentford. So this now either gives Brentford leeway in offering him more or the chance for him to move to another Club.
  • I'm sure I read recently on the Southend OS that on 24th June, Mc Cormack and Adam Barrett had been released from their contracts (maybe 'breach of contract' because of delays/non-payment of wages...?).

There was also some reference to a "League 2 wage cap". Could that also imply that their existing contract paid them in excess of this 'League 2 wage cap' ....thus invalidating their existing contract by compulsorily reducing their wages?

And if so, does this also apply to Simon Francis being released from his contract?

Perhaps someone more knowledgable than me on this subject could comment.
  • bit of a kick in the balls to Solly if we signed him - not a bad player though
  • Good idea that, let's buy all the players from a team that just got relegated...
  • Southend website says he wants to go and because his wages represent a large percentage of their budget they have released him. Elsewhere rumoured to be joining Palace.

Or all those who have just been promoted?

    Norwich and Notts County.

  • He was one of the many players discussed on Football Rumours , but discounted because we Richardson. It was linked with Mccormack though if I remember .

A definatly maybe I would say
  • [cite]Posted By: CafcAndy[/cite]The only pattern i see emerging is signing 2 bob players on a downer after being relegated.

Look at decent non league players, or bench players from a higher league on loan.

According to patterns, we should be relegated this year..

absolute pony talk. we've signed two players from promoted sides!

Not really it will be case of neither of you are gonna go for a full season there will be opportunites for both and the man performing will hold the shirt.

I assume you do not mean in a Carlton Cole sort of way?
  • Done the same as McCormack, been released from his contract so a free agent.

Southend ST holder said he wouldn't be suprised if he ended up with us. A very attacking full back, premiership quality going forward and whips in a beautiful cross, but the reason he is still in the lower leagues is because he can't defend that well, is how he described him.
  • Doesn't mean much, but in FM he's rated as Southend's best player, Barrett 2nd (now at Palace), McCormack 4th...

Now he's without a club I could see us going for him. As McCormack said on the OS today, the players didn't get paid, that can't help morale and team spirit. Nothing wrong with picking the best players up from a relegated club. It's happened to us when we've gone down and the better players have done well since leaving us.

Southend finished 8th in 08/09 and 6th 07/08 with Francis there. I'd imagine it's more like when we had Young and Bent in a poor Premier League side, rather than every player not being good enough.

    fits in perfectly
  • Basically the 3rd division version of Glen Johnson.

    Sign him up
  • Having mentioned the name I've got to say I think Parky could actually do a job with him and he's young enough to shore up the defensive side of his game. I want him at Charlton, definitely.

Parky might look at getting a right back in now, though there's no specific quote from Parky himself saying he'll sign a direct replacement.
PHIL Parkinson says he will waste no time in searching for a new right-back after losing Frazer Richardson to Southampton this week.

The defender signed for the Saints in a £450,000 deal on Tuesday, leaving Chris Solly as the only recognised right-back at the club.

“It was a disappointment to lose Frazer because we didn’t expect that to happen,” said Charlton boss Parkinson.

“It happened very quickly and the board decided it was a deal they wanted to take.

“I’ve got a bit of work to do with the back four now but I’m pleased with the players we’ve brought in this week.”

    or Moo2
  • Francis is apparently very settled in the area so probably won't want to move far. We're seen as a possibility and have been mentioned on Southend message boards as a possible club he might sign for.

From what I've been told, as others have said he's meant to be a good attacking right back, great crosser of the ball, but needs to work on his defending.

Be interesting to see if Parky would go for that type of full back. Moutaouakil never played under Parky, but then again Richardson and Youga like to attack.

Richardson was very solid defensively, a few wingers had good games against him but generally he was a safe bet. Youga worked very hard on his defending after being out of favour when Parky took over and seemingly a liability in The Championship. I think Parky will not favour a full back who is better going forward than defending and may pass on Francis.

More likely to go with another Richardson type character or a RB version of Borrowdale.
  • Another text to my Southend season ticket holding uncle.

"Bombs forward, doesn't defend very well but would probably shine in a better side" was the response
  • I think we desperately need a rock solid full back, so I'd rather not get him unless our left back becomes Borrowdale.
  • He certainly sounds good and very similar to richardson
  • On trial at Huddersfield according to Southend forum

That's a long old commute from his home in Southend, where he is settled!
