Skysports.com understands Charlton are closing in on the signing of former Norwich defender Gary Doherty.
Doherty is available on a free transfer after being released by Norwich at the end of last season.
Doherty made 227 appearances during his six years at Carrow Road, but he was informed he did not figure in Paul Lambert's plans for the new season.
A number of clubs, including Walsall are believed to have expressed an interest in the 30-year-old, but Charlton are at the head of the queue for his signature.
Doherty is understood to have held talks with Charlton boss Phil Parkinson about a move to the Valley and Parkinson is hopeful of tying up a deal for the Republic of Ireland international.
Charlton are ready to offer Doherty a two-year deal as they look to rebuild their squad after missing out on promotion last season.

I can't believe we are now competing with Walsall for players!
That's the way I see it.
But you know what I'm going to say.
