The night is always darkest before dawn - thread for those looking forward to the coming season

edited July 2010 in General Charlton
Pre season training starts today and with limited numbers I am hoping there are quite a few trialists involved too. We've never been one for making it known who we are are looking at and I'd like to think that there are a number of deals in motion that may be contingent on other things like the Bailey deal being rubber stamped.

It's been a pretty crap summer with the disappointment of the play off's and, personally, I can't say I was too fussed with the World Cup as the outcome was inevitable but it's still annoying nonetheless

The has been a summer riddled with daft transfer rumours, yet more administration speculation and surprisingly little talk of a potential takeover. In fact the only constant this summer has been negativity. And to cap it all off Gritt's departed - a genuine CAFC legend.

Maybe I am alone in this thinking but I am excited about the new season rapidly approaching - whilst we are short on numbers I predict this will change soon and from looking at the fixtures I can't really see many teams to fear. Presumably Huddersfield, Sheff Weds, Brighton & Southampton are going to be the bigger hitters but we need to maintain the momentum from the end of the season where our form and togetherness shone through despite the end result.

I think we just need a little bit more bite and we could be one of the teams that the others fear and if we can acquire a couple of strikers that are capable of hitting the target regularly and working in unison then who knows.......

either way - the season starts today. Now. And it's going to be a rollercoaster

  • I'm going to hold fire with any prediction for trhe coming season until at least the start of August.........giving Parky etc a month to bring some bodies in.

If , by then, we haven't secured the services of at least 2 decent strikers , plus a central midfield playmaker and a couple of wingers who can at least cross a ball, then........
  • Wow, that's an impressively positive post, nice work!
I'm normally Mr Optimistic but even I've been feeling a bit depressed about the start of the season looming.

This is the key for me though...

"if we can acquire a couple of strikers that are capable of hitting the target regularly and working in unison then who knows.."

    Fingers crossed!

    Great post, Swizzo!
  • I am looking forward to it, but also worried. I know it could be different in a few weeks if players sign new deals and we bring in some new players. I had thought by 1st July we'd have heard news on more than 2 out of contract players.

I'm sure we'll sort out the squad, the main worry is where will the goals come from.

I'd take mid table right now, but it could be a different league next year. Last year we always had the chance of automatic promotion. This time we might see a top 2 or 3 run away with it, and the play off positions might not be so close.

I expect the teams that line up against AFC Wimbledon and Welling to be quite different the the one against Bournemouth.
  • I personally hoped all the 'bad news' would have been got out the way in bulk soon after the previous season finished, and that hasn't been the case.

I'm hoping that the end of June, which i understood is where a lot of football contracts are based on, would signal the end of the bad news, but i'm not too sure now.

None of us know how much needed to be raised in player sales this summer to plug the potential shortfall, nor do we know how the currently salaries of who are left with us fit into what will be the budget for this season. Further 'bad news' may come from the fact we still need to move one or two on to get our wagebill where it needs to be.

I'm not too concerned the fact we appear short of bodies at present. With a huge reduction in wage bill needed, i fully expected us to do the bulk of our business a bit later in the summer than others. I remember Leeds having something ridiculous like 6 senior pros a fortnight before the season started just a few years ago, and they went on to have a play-off season.

I'm appreciative enough to understand that nothing is clearly being done out of choice, but out of necessity. The club were wrong with its budgeting towards the end of the Premiership time, and have continued to be unrealistic since in the hope of climbing again. Gambles of continued to be taken, and have continued to fail.

It couldn't continue no more, so if it is properly being gripped now to the extent that we will now be living within our means, then although it naturally leads to some supporter upset, i'm pleased in a way its being done.
  • I normally try and be optimistic about any season, this one is looking the hardest for me.
  • What BigRed said.

I totally agree with this, I feel the same, a financial move in the right direction.
  • Looking forward to the away games as a good piss up. However, a half empty Valley will be a stark reminder of how far the club has fallen recently.

Football wise, i think the standard will be worse than ever but I will get behind whoevers wearing the shirt.
  • I think a lot of it depends on the spirit of the team in the coming season.

If we've got a bunch of lads, whatever their limitations, give everything they've got and even if a goal down, can raise their game ......... then all it needs is for the crowd to do the same.

We just need to pull together as club, team and supporters.

strangely i am optimistic for the forth coming mainly because my expectation levels are so low.

i want to see a passion fight and youth the key for me is Randolph, Dailey, Richardson, Semedo and then rebuilding the wings and upfront, those four give us experience and strength that should allow some youthful play from either within our youth team or some promising youngsters from higher league clubs on loan,

those of you who reckon parky is so good or that their is nothing better out there this is his biggest season, very little funds a team that needs rebuilding not just for this season but for many to come..

prediction 12th and a new manager by the newyear
  • Great post by swisdom, I am looking forward to the season and expect many ups and downs but thats the lot of charlton, as long as they show heart on the field then I'll be happy.

I agree - that's all I want. Show me passion and I don't care if we get beaten by a better team.
  • I'm really positive now, I still feel if parky is allowed to get the 4 or 5 first teamers we need either freebies or season long loans I think we could be a real dark horse this season. Everyone now at the club knows they are playing to keep the club alive so I expect to see some pasion and pride this term. Looking forward to seing a few youngsters get more games mambo, tuna, stavinou ect.. we havnt done this since the days of rufus, newton, bowyer. As I've said before the lack of a real derby millwall, gillingham will help the club I reckon. I really think we will be there or there abouts next season, top six will be us, saints, sheff weds, peterbrough, plymouth, brighton and huddersfield I reckon all teams we have taken points off in the past. Swindon won't be around nor colchester. Plus I've got my first season ticket since 2006 so am totally fired up and counting down the days till were all in the lib beer garden catching up again.

COME ON YOU RIP ROARING GOAL SCORING ADDICKS!!!!!
  • Great post Swisdom.
As an early 1970's addick, this situation is nothing. I am very upbeat about the new season, dunno why just am.
I know we will not be playing 'the beautiful game' but if we play the 'in a certain light, worth a do game' with bags of passion thrown in then I will be happy.

    Good luck to us!!
  • Looking forward to a season with no expectations of being favourite for promotion for first time in years. Hopefully players will benefit from lack of that pressure. Agree that all I want is to see the commitment that teams like millwall displayed last year and anything else is a bonus. Paint trophy run would be good too.
  • What NLA said though I feel we'll keep parky unless battling relegation
  • Once we get near to August 7, I might be able to a little more enthusiastic. Until then I'm going back to bed and putting the duvet over my head
