Do clubs still hold a "trial day"?

edited June 2010 in General Charlton
I've often wondered if we do one and, if not why not. I guess it's fairly similar to the community scheme we do but i'm thinking more of an emphasis on trial than just a fun day/week.

It could be very informal and old school - open invitation depending on ages and just turn up at a given time with your boots, a shirt will be provided and away you go for a few basic drills/tests to weed out the hopeless from the half decent.

Then - arrange a quick match and stress its not just about individual skills but also about team play.

Even if it took a while to find someone worth a contract - it would be good PR in the community and you never know whats out there do you?

I think we have a great catchment area with plenty of youths who are probably classed as "underprivileged" and this could be a kind of mentoring scheme.

Or is this basically what the Community Sceheme events are all like?

  • I've always thinked we should hold some, they're may be undiscovered talent who has never been able to afford to play for a local sunday league club and it would give a few people some breaks. I know there was this thing where you get trialed and scouts from loads of clubs come for this one day but it costed around £150+ to just fill a position.
  • Id like to have a go at this. I wouldnt pay £150 though lol.

Id defo try out for the team though. Even if Charlton dont sign you, they might reccomend you to another lower team if you have some talent
  • We don't in the traditional term. They are organised centrally by the FA and then teams who are interested in scouting go along. This has pluses and minuses. Plus, lots of boys get to attend, its easier to get involved and there aren't lots and lots arranged by each club.
Minus, if you have an off day you could ruin all chances of ever getting a contract with anyone and "bidding wars" have been known to take place for highly rated youngster. ie a club will show off its facilities, pastoral care to attract a 13 year old.
