[cite]Posted By: northstandsteve[/cite]you need to remember Mooney is still fairly new to the professional game and i really do think he will progress over the next year or so.I have said all along I like him,so wouldn't be too disappointed if we signed, sorry I can't have akpo at all.
Do you think we can't get in a better player than Mooney, even in this league?
All these responses seem to indicate that we haven't (Judas Defoe aside) had a decent striker come through for quite a few years now . Considering the amount of players in other positions we've had come through it's quite strange
Jamal Campbell-Ryce, James Walker, Osei Sankofa, Barry Fuller, Kem Izzet, Charlie MacDonald, Jason Brown (the goalkeeper at Blackburn), Paul Smith (another keeper), Danny Haynes (well we let him go at 15/16 I think it was), George Boyd (another let go as a school boy).
Josh Wright and Harry Arter are now both at FL clubs, Rashid Yussuff was released by Gillingham recently.
Shelvey obviously another one and McGinty (obviously yet to prove much at his age) at Man Utd.
Danny Shittu and Mark McCammon two we bought from non-league at a young age.
Few more in non-league, Onome Sodje in Slovakia, Simon Ford at Kilmarnock, others possibly without a club like Nathan Ashton that were at FL clubs not too long ago.
So apart from Defoe no decent strikers (Lisbie hardly counts considering how long ago he made his debut), definitely our worst position for producing players that have pro careers.
Mooney was the wrong player for the long ball game we played last season. If he can find a team who play it to feet and a midfield with the energy to get to him and give him passing options then he could be a success. Can't see the point in signing him unless we radically change our game plan.
Good strikers aren't produced by any teams regularly. The way I see it resources should go into youth players that can play across the midfield and defence, with notable exceptions.
Mooney is the type of player that I love to watch. If people can't see his runs, movement and intelligence at knowing when to stop if you're in space they should enjoy watching Mcleod the human disaster pacman wasting space at all opportunity. Having said that we have a team that literally sell it's enthusiasm down the bank. P\rky had us much improved and our defence finally has looked competitive since Borrowdale came on loan. We just can not afford more than two errant attacking players in this team. So he is not worth signing unless Bailey is replaced by someone willing to be disciplined in the middle of the park, and Sam and Racon are replaced by players who are more than 10-15 min players. If we get an all action midfield - most unlikely - then I'd be more than happy to sign him.
All this talk of Mooney's lack of physical presence reminds me of my greatest concern.
Is anyone else worried that the majority of our youth products are in the Lloyd Sam mould? Decent footballers, but unable to fight their way out of a wet paper bag. I put the likes of Solly, Wagstaff, Tuna and Stavrinou firmly in that category ... and Shelvey too, for what it was worth.
From what I've seen of League 1 football, the emphasis has to be on strength and stamina as well as skill, which is why Lloyd Sam, for all his talent, failed to convince many of us this season.
If the core of our team next season is going to feature these prospects from the Academy, I hate to say it, but it scares me to death.
Unfortunately I agree about our youth players. Perkins is tall but not particularly powerful (obviously still young though) and Davisson is small like Solly and Stavrinou.
Mambo is the only young player I've seen in the last 3 years or so with any physical presence (edit: and Basey, but he went pro 3 years ago now). Being a centre back he has to have that though. He's the opposite, he lacks on the technical/footballing side.
Not writing them off, but I'd worry if too many have to start at once.
I suppose it's down to how the club want to develop young players. Get in athletes and develop their technical and mental side, or bring in footballers and hope they develop physically.

as as team we are definitely very, very poor physically (Mooney is probably the worst example but there are others)
there is a gym at Sparrows Lane as far as I'm aware

Paul Williams
Carl Leaburn (perhaps not)
Kim Grant
....struggling a bit now
Didn't we get Willo from non league rather than through our youths or colts as they were back then?

It's not as many as you may think. Since 98 we've bought the vast majority of players. Youth products have been quite low, and success rate average:
Elliot, Randolph
Konchesky, Fortune, Lloyd Samuel, Basey, Turner
Parker, Wagstaff, Sam,
Lisbie, Defoe
Of course, I probably have forgotten someone...
