  • [cite]Posted By: JA_66[/cite]Very disappointed with this. First thing we've done is give a contract to another mediocre striker. So we now have McLeod, Fleetwood, Dickson, Tuna and Sodje - none of whom look like a starter (hard to say on Fleetwood as he's been invisible). Forster would have been a better option, even given his age.

Just hoping we aren't now going to waste more money on Sam Sodje, clearly he isn't fit enough to justify signing him.

Rumours of Sheffield Utd wanting Sam - odd, given they have Reid.

Sam Sodje is currently carrying a knock, don't think anyone can doubt his fitness when he is fit (if that makes sense!)

why odd Sheff Utd wanting Sam, Reid is a left winger last time I looked and Sam a right one ?
  • What actually is Sam Sodje's knee problem? Have heard about it before on here, never really been explained. Have some of the games this season that he's missed been because of it?
  • I think i can remember someone stating that they spoke to him at the training ground, think it may have been sideways when he picked up his signed shirt. From what i can remember he said it was bruising?....sideways might correct me.
  • [quote][cite]Posted By: Scoham[/cite]All of those are Pardew signings though. There are doubts about some of their characters as well, even Varney worked hard but struggled with the expectations and pressure. People will say Parky's strikers were no better, but they at least contributed to us finishing 4th, all scored a few goals and worked hard for the team. Can't say that about all of Pardew's signings.[/quote]

They were relatively as bad in my eyes. Scored a few goals wasn't/isn't good enough.

All this nonsense about 'readjusting expectations' makes me laugh.

The only expectations I have is that a striker can do his job ie:control a ball, pass it to a red shirt and score goals. Too many of Parkinsons signings can't do even 1 out of 3.

    I'm not asking for miracles.

"Sometimes goes unnoticed, but he's won headers this season that no other striker here could."

    HE'S 6'2" FFS!!
  • i love the re-adjust quote as we slide down the leagues ... doesn't mean we have to sit back quietly without saying he is pony and he is pony ... he can't kick a ball properly consistantly , he has had a couple of reasonable strikes but there are also the fresh air shots and slices that are aplenty .... still better re-adjust and accept he's all we're going for

and failed to head so many more, the most he's done normally is slightly put the backs under pressure - no comparison to Burton, who if he leaves will be a major loss if not replaced.
  • With a full pre-season to get up to fitness I think it will be a solid signing. He proved he was decent at Champ level with Sheffield Wednesday and if he is used as a squad player here I think it is a good signing.

That's my point, we need a tall striker.
  • He'll score 25 goals before the end of Jan, then be sold.

Well, you can sit there and spend all day moaning about how good things used to be, but the fact of the matter is those days are gone. If we're ever going to get back to them we need to stop banging on about them and concentrate on our current situation because past glories count for nothing in this business.

Our current situation means we don't have a pot to piss in and are shopping around looking at injury prones/rejects/unproven youngsters. It's a fact and we, as a club, need to accept it, meet it head on and deal with it.

In this instance, dealing with it means we've got to try and get the best of those bargain basement 'value' options and get the best out of them. For our part as fans that means backing the players 9as long as they give their best efforts) and not undermining them by constantly pointing out their faults and weaknesses and ignoring what strengths and abilities they have, as all players have some of both, to varying degrees.

It's what your beloved Curbs did, and it's what we fans did when he first took charge.
  • Good post Exiled.

I'll agree with those not happy if Akpo is our "main man" on September 1st. At the moment I think he might start more regularly than last season, but he is not Parky's attempt to sign that 20+ goal striker.
  • Good post Exiled, sums it up for me.
  • Totally agree with Exiled Addick. Moaning about a signing the day it is official amazes me. It's time to wake up to our situation and back the players and manager.
  • ok i'll bury my head in the sand then exiled ....
i'm not harping about the great days i've just pointed out most of the tripe we've signed in the last few years aren't good enough and i've (unfortunately) had the right opinion of where we are going as a club not with hindsight , i know no one likes the bad news but i am usually right and this fellas pony
but if i say simon walton, amdy faye, izale mcleod, robbie elliot akpo etc are good or bad on an internet site will it make them decent of course it wont ...
i know we're in the doo doo i saw it coming a long time ago doesn't mean i have to be happy with our lot ...
  • For those that think Akpoe or Mooney are the worst strikers we have ever had I gived you

    Kenny Achampong

he only played 10 games for us but it felt like a 100, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Achampong

I would say that it is the opposite of burying your head in the sand, it is facing up to facts.

  • No one is saying he'll be brilliant for us and score regularly (well maybe one or two...), but Akpo is much like Llera. A typical fairly average League One player who has something to offer as a squad player.

We need players like that, they're cheap and happy to fight for their place, and can do a job with better players around them. They all have moments where they look non-league, along with the good things they offer, that's why they're only League One players.

The important thing is we keep and find some better players to go with the likes of Akpo, Spring (or whoever takes his place), Llera and the young players so they are only squad players. If they end up having to start 35+ games then we have a problem. At the moment there are months to sign better players and we've only sold Shelvey so far.

Exactly. No-one says you have to or should like it, but we need to make the best of this bad situation and strive to get out of it.

As I said earlier, making the most of the bad situattion that is Akpodje is to strive to keep him fit by managing his training etc carefully and then play to his strengths - i.e. provide him with decent service from wide areas to attack.

Just moaning and writing him off as pony will get us nowhere and isn't fair. He's got his strengths and weaknesses like all players, and as you move down the leagues palyers get gradually less strengths and more weaknesses. We're in tier 3 with no money so Akpo is the kind of player we're going to be signing, but plenty of teams before us have done alright with players like him as long as they get the right mix so the the team unit covers for each individuals weakness and brings out individuala strengths.

Again, it's what Curbs was so masterful at - building teams that were geater than the sum of their parts.

Nice job, but i’m thinking something more like this...

  • I see him as the equivalent of say Matt Spring for example- limitations aplenty but the management knew that when they signed him and never intended to make a star out of him. And lest we forget, during one of our not very good runs last season, more than a few people were championing Spring to come back into the team... as others have said, not a GREAT signing but a decent enough one for this league, and thats what we all have to accept, whoever we lay the blame at the feet of.
  • Anyway, we are not settling for Akpo because we stayed down. As he had played the required amount of games we had to give him a contract, even if we had been promoted.
  • yep but unfortunately we have parky and not curbs
and therefore we are lacking the ability to get the most out of our players , and let's be honest we tend to get our players to under perform
ok well we'll have to accept parky and mediocre signings ...
akpo would be a good signing if we were looking to stau up in the 4th tier .... he will be a good signing as a 4th choice striker for a mid table 3rd tier team

and whatever shit you or i write on a message board wont make a bit of difference on the pitch......

in the ground i cheer on everyone who plays in a charlton shirt no matter how crap i think they are ... but then i'm sure most do on here that's why we're wasting our lives away waffling on about it
  • good news! i think apko will score goals for us in league 1. it takes a while for a striker to get used to a squads style and with him commited for a deal now, i think he will florish! yes apko, go on mate, be a hero !
  • [cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]

In which case oohaah, I'll let you off and agree to disagree - but too much moaning on message boards puts everyone on a downer and that's never a good thing, even if the players don't hear it/care about it.

For what it's worth though, Parky is the closest we've come to replacing Curbs and i can think of far worse people to be in charge at this current time. Not sure I'd trust him with £Ms if we were taken over by a bunch of Arab billionaires, but I do think he's quite well suited to this shoe-string type stuff.

I guess we'll find out next season.
  • Bit of a shame he is being slagged off by several on here. People should really get used to the facts of our situation, as eloquently put, by Exiled_Addick.

With the money we have, or don't have, he could well be a regular, if he can stay fit. Who knows what a good run could do for him? I for one, hope that he makes a lot of people eat humble pie! (As I'm sure most dissenters would, at the end of the day)

Welcome back(?) Akpo! The best of luck to you! You'll have my support when you are in our colours, that's for sure!
