Now we face the edge of darkness.

edited May 2010 in General Charlton
I don't really know where to start, we got the goals we needed looked in control, looked comfortable. They lose a man I start to think what a great night this could be. The turning point was obviously llera again making a big match mistake, the real problem with the guy is he is solid but always seems to make big mistakes that costs us. Extra time and we looked again comfortable and I thought we could still win this but that was not to be.

My main question thats flying around in my head is what now? Players that we will loose? Will we go into administration? I can't even contemplate another season in this league......

  • Well the sooner you accept it the better because its happening.

Regardless of how much money we have, who pulls on the shirt, who sits on the board, who is the manager one thing remains.

We are all still Charlton and we want the best for our club so let's pull together and do everything WE can to make it great again.

    CTID.
  • I think we'll lose...

    Racon, Bailey, Sam.

Hell, most of our players, admin a big possibility.. and a worrying season beckons. Ah well...
  • People dont't seem to realise how imperitive it was for us to go up... this is the end of Charlton Athletic as we no it.

behave, we've been through worse than this, and hold on tight as its gonna get alot worse, we'll be down here for a while now, but so be it atleast we're back at our own ground have our own academy which has started to produce league player after league player, you have to take the rough with the smooth, by my reckoning we've got another 2 yrs before we've balanced out the 7 yrs in the prem!

I'm sorry, league player after league player? You mean two goalkeepers and a couple of teenage midfielders (one of whom has gone)? The only reason our acadamy is going to be producung first team players next year is because most of our players will have left and we have no money to replace them.
  • so last 2 yrs - Elliot, Randolph, Wagstaff, Shelvy, Basey, Wright, Stav, Tuna, Solly, Mambo (ok only tried at welling this yr but still good reviews), Jenkinson (again non league but will be league quality) Clark (again first season non league will make grade pro though)

Yes good reviews playing for who, WELLING! not charlton first team standard now are they think about things logically man.
  • charlton first team standard next season will be lower than this seasons ....out of the players named above only shelvey, wright (maybe) and randy(maybe) are decent enough for a promotion push, the rest are not good enough and will be the reason we're swanning around in the lower reaches of football ...

i dont know how much longer we can afford the academy not in this league
  • We can say bye to Racon, Bailey, Somedo, Sam, Richardson and possibly Youga

  • Isn't Randolph out of contract as well? His performances over the last few weeks would have alerted some clubs to his talent
  • [cite]Posted By: CrayAddick[/cite]the real problem with the guy is he is solid but always seems to make big mistakes that costs us

I thought Llera was one of our best players on the night and the difference between the game at Swindon and at The Valley. Austin ran us ragged at Swindon whereas he was bottled up mostly at The Valley.
  • We may well need now to go into administration, and hope to sell the club cheaply to any interested parties. We may need to take the 10 point hit, and to cut our cloth accordingly....because I am fed up with viewing every defeat as a disaster, and there being no joy in victory, simply relief. I expect very tough times ahead, and resent deeply anybody along for the ride, and the pay, who contributes nothing to the cause.
Bought two season tickets for next year weeks ago....am I a mug or what?
  • Out of the youngsters we've only really seen Solly who looks like he will be a decent right back and Waggstaff who judging on last night and most times he's started, he can't take the ball past a man as he doesn't have the skill so he runs around a bit. I hope if Sam goes we have a better right winger than him for next year.
  • [cite]Posted By: UP...THE...ADDICKS[/cite]We can say bye to Racon, Bailey, Somedo, Sam, Richardson and possibly Youga

I heard last night that the club don't know where Youga is, disappeared back to France 5 weeks ago for treatment and nothing heard since, dunno how true that is.

If we can keep just one then please please let it be Semedo - the guy is awesome.
  • I've also heard that Youga doesnt want to play for us again.

Stop paying his wages then, he'll soon appear after that.
  • I'm sure we will get clarification on whats going to happen in the next few days. I guess it comes down to whether the existing board have the money or will to subsidise the club for another season.
  • Bailey will go as we need the cash and Sam. Burton will go his wages are to high.

Edge of darkness ???? i laugh in your face , been there seen it and still here. As all older CAFc fans have. Football aint about glory --its about mates, laughs, disapointment and still coming back year after year.
  • What Goonerhater said. Spot on.

  • I do not know about the edge of Darkness!..... But quite a few of us are looking for a light at the end of a tunnel, and not the one coming onto the pitch at the Valley!.....
A radical restructure may well be needed, off the pitch as well as on it, a bit like the UK economy reallly!

People cite this player and that player going, the fact is we do not know, and will have to wait and see.

I imagine that the chairman and CEO have a statergy, if not several business plans/ possibilities/options..... or lack of them!

As fans we are focussed on the squad, who is going, coming etc...... I bet the agents are busy this morning!

absolutely spot on and as the saying goes, footballers come and go but the fans are there forever

No surprise to me that we have looked more solid in the last five weeks. He cant defend
  • The worrying thing is that it's our whole midfield we'll lose. Reid goes back to Sheff Utd, Shelvey has already gone, Bailey Semedo and Racon are our 3 most saleable assets, and Sam is out of contract. That leaves us Spring and Wagstaff.
  • Feck me you lot should have been around in the eighties, minutes from going out of business, couldn't to pay players wages, getting beat every week, crowds of 6k, that was bad.
Yes we all feel bad at this moment in time but I thinK we need a reality check here.

Would you really have want to go to Wembley and dare I say it lose to millwall and face that humiliation?

I couldn't give a toss what league we are in I support the club not chase the glory, its part and parcel of football ask any luton or oxford fan, where were they twenty years ago, we have no devine right to go up or be in that league because we charlton

Enjoy who we are because when our time comes around again you can remember seasons such as these and appreciate what you have
  • Spot on
  • If there is no credible buyer for the club currently in the offing, the directors should sell whichever players they intend to sell as soon as possible (preferable that they conduct the sales than leave it to an administrator).

If, after those sales, next year’s budget for the club shows that a meaningful amount of cash will still need to be raised and they are at all doubtful as to their willingness/ability collectively to provide that cash, the directors should wave the white flag and call in the administrator as soon as possible.

Why should they do so now when they are themselves major creditors?

Firstly, on timing, the evidence of other clubs seems to show that it’s better to take the points deduction before the start of the season than have the threat of administration hanging over a club during a season and the administrator would at least have the rest of the summer to seek a new owner.

Secondly, as I’ve said elsewhere, they already know that no buyer would pay anything for the shares and would demand that the directors agree to be repaid less than 100% of their existing loans. So they are already staring at a loss on those loans in or out of administration - of course more of a loss in administration but that has to be weighed against the perennial need to inject more cash if outside the Prem (now a given for the foreseeable future, without a change of ownership).

It has to be doubtful that (post-Shelvey) our stock of saleable players will be of sufficient value to get us through another full season, even on further reduced wages, without the directors writing more cheques. After last night (and the likelihood of a weaker squad next year), their willingness to do that as a collective group may well be near its limit. They could figure that to do so would simply be to throw good money after bad - and who could blame them for concluding that? In any case, there may or may not be much unpledged security to back new loans and the security backing the existing loans is only likely to have practical relevance to the lenders if the club goes through administration, where the unsecured creditors would (unfortunately for them) get wasted first.

As has been said, administration doesn’t mean the end of a football club. There would be great uncertainty of course but it could eventually bring about a change of ownership and a badly needed re-capitalisation of the club. Unlike others, at least we own our own ground, even if it is mortgaged.

It may sound crazy but it’s not inconceivable that one or two members of the current board that continue to have meaningful financial clout might bid for the club out of administration, at that stage being prepared to inject more capital in the context of gaining sole ownership and all creditors taking haircuts of varying degrees than they would be now. Obviously, an “internal” change of ownership would be better effected without administration but that would depend upon the current relationships between the “main” directors (thought not to have been entirely harmonious in recent years). In any event, in everyone’s interests, after last night they had better get on with it if that were a possibility.
  • I strongly suspect Administration is on the cards right now, the only thing that being promoted might have done is find us a buyer to stave this off.

Time to hold on tight and see what happens.

(Have to say I thought this was an ironic thread title..)

I do remember those years and totally agree with your sentiments. Unfortunately if things don't change sooner rather than later we are heading to that situation again, and i would prefer that not to happen.
  • WIWLB is right, I've been around Charlton since my first match in 73/74 season, this is not great but it is no where near as bad as some of the dark days in our history.
So we've got another season in League 1, lets see what the close season holds, lets wait and see who stays and goes and take it from there, roll on August!!!

Oh yeh and if England can win the World Cup in the summer it won't make up for last night but it will cheer me up...a bit!
