Frustration with loan signings

That we haven't dined at the top table with these. We should be looking to pick up the best youngsters from Man U,Liverpool,Arsenal,Spurs,Etc.

I was impressed with Ward for Swindon who is a 18 year old from Bolton.Surely we should be a club the top teams would look as a good opportunity to nuture their youngsters. I met Martin Ling the then manager of orient a few years ago on holiday. We had a long chat and he said that the players Charlton had loaned him, we had done so without expecting Orient to pay any of their wages and the benefit for us was experience for the players.Instead of akpo and for you Mooney haters him as well, we should be looking at youngsters from the top teams.I would imagine, correct me if im wrong but they would probably pay the wages.

  • Why the hell would a top club send one of their youngsters to us, when we don't even play our own young promising players.
  • Reid? Borrowdale? Jackson before he got injured, i think mooney has done ok ans so has sodje in phases

I agree with that philosphy but i think our loan signings have all done well this season
  • i like mooney but many dont akpo for me is pony borrowdale for me is pony reid does it in flashes.I would have liked us to go for Bostock, arsenal have loads to choose from, if they pay their wages why not go for it.
  • My take is - when we need a loan player we need solid cover, and shouldn't be gambling on someone else's youngster. Depends on the individual of course.
  • Our left sided loans have been good, Reid, Borrowdale & Jackson.

Our forward loans are terrible. Find better than Mooney & Sodje in the Kent League.
  • i liked Jackson, reid is ok in patches, borrowdale im not impressed with.

its easy to say this in hindsight though Steve do you not think? bostock probably was on our radar but we either got someone else or maybe he didnt wanna go who knows? i think they have all done at least ok, borrowdale has been very solid up until friday where he was a bit suspect.

VG its easier to say that but didnt dickson come from similar standard and fleetwood? and neither of those would get in ahead of Mooney & sodje, i do feel them two have been in-consistent but they have played their part
  • i said this to richard murray 2 years ago at the bromley meeting when hull got frazer campbell. So it isn't hindsight. When Birmingham were in the championship they got Bendtner and Larsson we never took that route we signed shite like Varney Gray and McCleod. So Johnny boy it aint hindsight son
  • Its was more tongue in cheek johnny, however i still think mooney is shocking and brings nothing to the table. Akpo isnt much better.
  • mooney is 10 times the player akpo will ever be,akpo jumps half an hour before the ball gets to him.

Have a look at the wiki page for Bendtner before it gets changed.
    Made me laugh.

  • It's about finding the right loans, the more defensive ones we're probably better going for players with experience. Strikers we probably all hoped we'd find a goalscorer, even if they were only on loan. I've mentioned this before, did wonder if we looked at young strikers rather than Championship reserve strikers.

Has a young striker gone on loan and scored regularly for anyone though? Swindon also have Frank Nouble on loan from West Ham, don't think he's done much for them. Leeds have Sanchez Watt on loan from Arsenal, don't think he's done loads either.

I don't rate Mooney or Akpo highly like most don't, but they have played their part. If we go up we definitely need better. Akpo when he's having a decent game is at least effective at this level, defenders do seem to worry about him.

Bostock? Where would we have played him? His best position is central midfield isn't it?

We did Steve, but when Pardew and then Parky tried to plug the gaps in our squad with Loan signings theis and other message boards were awash with protests at our reliance on the loan system. Bostock would have beena wasted signing, at the time he went to brentford we were all confident that Bailey, racon and Shlevey would tear this league apart and, in fairness, they did for a while.

The only loan striker who's scored lots in this division this season is Jordan Rhodes at Hudds from Ipswich, good strikers from the top clubs go to the Championship.

*Edit* Rhodes is a permanent Huddds player according to Soccerbase, although I'm sure I heard he was on loan earlier in the season.
  • played on the wing for Brentford

i aint so sure, granted akpo is jank but mooney can hardly hold himself up. sessions on the weights please.
  • scoham you cannot afford in this league to play 2 centre midfielders who dont score goals, racon & semedo how many have they scored this year ?

please tell me exiled when pardew or parky whilst in the championship dined at the top table with loan signings ?
  • Without Semedo there would have been plenty of goals alright...........

Going past Elliot and Randolph !
  • We signed plenty of players on loan from the Premiership. Cook and Sinclair in particular where two we hoped would be good (Sinclair was great by all accounts for Palace). Anyway, I'm not saying they made good loan signings (although pretty much all of Parky's have been better that Pardew's), but that wasn't people's beef, or at least it's not what they said. The complaint was we were overlooking our existing squad members in favour of loan signings.

As per usual, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.
  • cook is not dining at the top table exiled he had been out injured with fulham for a season. We didn't dine at th etop table, peoples frustrations were we were signing loanees who were no better than we had.I'll give you the 2 boys at Watford Lansbury and Cleverley.Who if you ask the Watford fans their 2 best players by a country mile this season. They were both available over the past 2 years Leicester had cleverley before Watford.

But we have the option of Bailey playing there and we had Shelvey - a goalscoring central midfielder was more like a strength of our squad, not somewhere we needed a new player. Games against the weaker sides Shelvey could have started, and others come on earlier. Bailey played there quite a bit anyway, and we were inconsistent.

Apart from some games, we usually needed Semedo in the middle IMO. If you can't win the ball or defend from the midfield you won't score goals either.
  • i agree you need 1 but not two of them,
  • Sounds lime steve's angling for an invite to Claridges - keeps going on about fine dining at top tables.
  • lol you cant come coz your too argumentative

Cook had been a top player in the Championship previously though so it was reasonable to expect him to be a lot better than the shower he turned out to be. Sinclair was on loan from Chelsea, if that's not the top table I don't know what is

We had Waghorn last season too and he's played a major part this year for Leicester. As for the other two, never seen them play, but if they were at Leicester last year and Watford this then they've played in different divisions to us on both occassions so how can you be so sure they'd be good enough for us last year and not out of our league this? Lets face it, we may have approached them, we have no idea, but if they're given the choice of playing for us in League 1 or Watford in the Champs who are they going to choose?

It's only really fair to criticise for not signing players who've done well at other League 1 clubs because it's fair to assume we'd have been able to get them.
  • im using them as examples we should approach the top 4 clubs and seek to give there youngsters the opportunity of first team football. The one thing out of Jonjo's transfer is I hope we take up this so called option.

You are assuming we didnot approach them, there is also the possibility we got knocked back.
  • The loan signings have done well this season and have provided good, experienced cover in areas of the team where we are weak or have injuries. Whenever we sign a youngster from another club we have people moaning "Why don't we give our own youngsters a chance"....
  • Ours loans this season:

Forster- 2 goals vs Carlisle and MK which gave us 6 points to keep us in the play offs.
Reid- Winning assist and goal when on as a sub vs Southend plus equaliser away to Huddersfield.
Akpo-Winner vs Leeds, been a bit hit and miss
Mooney- Not as bad as some make out but hasn't really been that effective since he's been here
Jackson- Look like a really good player before injury.
Borrowdale- Been pretty solid not done much wrong.

So I think we've done well, compare it to last season....

Not many of the top clubs will loan players down to this level. Spurs have done it with a few players (i think Yeovil have had a few and Townsend went to Orient) but it's rare you see a Chelsea, Man Utd or Arsenal player this low down. Cleverly and Lansbury are in the championship, so is Emmanuel-Thomas, Wilshere is in the premier. Welbeck went to Preston, and who have Chelsea loaned out? Mancienne to Wolves and Stoch to FC Twente.
A player i would've liked though is Jon Obika, scored loads at youth level for Spurs and looked good for Yeovil. I don't know what's happened to him at Millwall but he went back to Spurs last week and scored 4 in a friendly against Chelsea. He'd surely be a better bet for a goal than Akpo or Mooney.
