[cite]Posted By: adamtheaddick[/cite]Big shame if he has gone already and don't get to give him a farewell on Saturday, surely they could have done the deal and waited till after the playoffs, I know he wasn't in parkys plans but say were 1 nil down at wembley 15 to go, shelvey would be a cert to come on, well in my eyes parky would probably bring on lera to sure things up.
[cite]Posted By: adamtheaddick[/cite]surely they could have done the deal and waited till after the playoffs
Simply couldn't risk him getting injured - that's the situation we are in, we can't risk no getting that money.
But how much would it have cost to take out risk insurance for a few weeks to cover 3 million, maybe 50K??
The premium could have been met by Liverpool to protect their investment, and deducted off the final transfer fee.
Had Parky wanted him to stay until the end of the season, ie; he intended to use him, I'm certain we could have found a way to make it happen. Don't underestimate Parky's role in this stupid, short sighted decision.

If it was that simple wouldn't we have done just that? No one knows just how much we might need the money right now.
He's been on the bench recently, came on against MK Dons, Southampton and Norwich. Started against Carisle, and was understandable that he didn't come on against Colchester.
Parky probably wouldn't have started Jonjo, but he surely would have come off the bench at the very least in the playoff semi finals if we were losing. Much like he has recently in games. Seems an easy way to have a go at Parky to me.
Can't believe that parkie is taking flack on this, if anyone is at fault its the board. they would have accepted the offer, they are custodians of the finances and negotiations. parkie is not Curbs, he does not run the club. Blame him for under using Shelvey, but not for the timing of the transfer.

But if you blame Parky for under using Shelvey, then you are blaming Parky for the transfer. The transfer came about because Jonjo was frustrated at not playing. Had he been playing he would have been happy to stay. That has already been confirmed on here by his Uncle.

Wouldn't have changed the fact that we need the money, automatic promotion or staying in this league. I think Shelvey may well have gone anyway.

It was/is a dream move for the lad...of course he'd have taken it.
sell him AFTER the play offs tho .....
he could have made a difference from the bench but to have taken that chance away is criminal and without promotion we are crushed as a club... it just really is a clueless decision no matter what you club apologists put out there ...

hard to argue with that
And it's equally hard to argue when none of us know the facts, well at the moment that is.
Effectively, we have sold him after the play off's. But if we need the money now, which we obviously do & Liverpool said no deal unless we know he's 100% fit, then our hands were tied.
If Jonjo only wanted to go to Liverpool or West Ham (which has been said & definitely not say Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal ) ,effectively if West Ham didn't come in for him (and they are skint) ,then there is only one offer. Take it or leave it and we had to take it.
There's no blame attached that I can see. We need the money desperately, we had the opportunity and took it.
If any of us were desperate for money and were given a chance, surely we would take it.
We wouldn't risk ourselves going bankrupt (admin in Charlton's case) just by waiting a few more weeks, on the chance that we may use an asset, that we haven't been using much recently (whether that was right or wrong ).

Sure, but we can only judge on what is in front of us ... and whether it is speculation based on not knowing the facts, for the average fan it seems a very strange thing to do. I am a big supporter of our board, but remaining silent when something does not seem right makes no sense ... it is often only through asking or challenging that we get to hear the facts.
How can fans not realise that this sale is a matter of economics and if it means keeping our club afloat, then so be it. If as an individual you are in financial trouble and you've already put your life savings in the pot and it's not enough, then you sell any assets you have left.
It was only a matter of two or three months ago that this board was awash with fans moaning that Jojo wasn't playing well and should be dropped. Now he's a hero that should have been in the team every week and Parky is a crap manager for not playing him. In this current climate 1.7 million is an incredible sum for the club to achieve for a unproven teenager albeit with great potential.
Good luck to Jonjo, I sincerely wish him well and will be following his career proud that he started life at Charlton. But as for all the moaners, we are in the third division with a financial problem, he's gone, get over it!

Well the argument against playing him in the play offs is "what if he got injured". Which is why I suggested that they could have insured against it. You can insure against almost anything in this world so quite why it would be so difficult in this situation I have no idea.

But if Liverpool want & have guaranteed apparently that Shelvey will play next season, he can't do that with a broken leg or a ruptured cruciate ligament ! It won't help them if he's insured or not.
It ain't that hard to understand surely !

I don't really care about Liverpool, I care about Charlton gaining promotion and staying in business. The idea of taking out insurance would be that if he got injured, and the transfer couldn't proceed, we would still get our 3-4-5 million.

Yes, but if Liverpool refused to do the deal on that basis, ie we sign him now & you don't play him or no deal, then we had no option. Take the money now or lose the opportunity and possibly go into administartion. I'd rather have Charlton without Shelvey, rather than go into administration.
Also, a minor point, but Shelvey wanted to go to Liverpool and as he did the decent thing signing a contract with us, then it's also reasonable that we shouldn't block his dream move, if we desperately need the cash.
Do you really think that if we're so skint that we're having to sell him now rather than wait a month, that we've got the money to spend on the kind of insurance premium required? It's too big a risk. That's assuming you can actually find an insurance company willing to insure against hypothetical transfer value rather than just loss of earnings, and who would pay up promptly if it all went pearshaped.
Imagine if he got injured in training rather than during a match if that arrangement was in place - I'd be thinking "insurance job" and so would the insurers I imagine.

I find that hard to believe.
