A little bit of positive news re Grant Basey

Charlton head physiotherapist Steve Allen has revealed that Grant Basey suffered ankle ligament damage - and not a broken leg - during Monday's night's 2-1 defeat at Bristol Rovers.

Left-back Basey was stretchered from the field of play following a horror tackle from Rovers man Dominic Blizzard just 12 seconds into the game, a challenge which only earned the Pirates midfielder a yellow card.

However, despite initial reports that Basey had suffered a broken tibia, Allen was able to give www.cafc.co.uk some positive news.

"It's not as bad as was feared at the time,” Allen told the official website. "Grant has soft tissue contusion [bruising] to the inside of his shin from the direct challenge, and subsequently this resulted in him rolling his ankle, causing ligamentous damage

  • Thats very good news but how far off is Youga ? Solly is not the answer imho. Got pulled all over the shop last night although did improve a bit. Loan LB perhaps ?
  • Ligaments are often worse than a break and with our track record of injured players being out for an age don't expect to see him this side of christmas.

wish him all the best though, desperately need a LB now if Youga is still a few weeks away
  • Damaged my ankle ligaments playing up at Coldharbour one evening a couple of years ago...as said above, physio told me is often worse than an actual break.. Obviously I am not a professional footballer, so my rehab had to be fitted in around work etc, but took me five months to be able to walk 'normally'...now I have no ankle to look at, just a big, round, tennis ball sized lump where the ankle used to be...

    Good look Grant.
  • I felt his pain last night - I snapped my fibula, dislocated the Tibia and mashed all the ligaments up good and proper when I was 17 - I was never the same again.
Glad its not a break but the recovery and rehab is long, slow and tortous.

I'm guessing he will get a better rehab and treatment than I did but it's still not going to be easy.

And he is out of contract in the summer which is a bummer. IMO he's done enough to earn a new one!

Got to endorse what Eltham Addick says here ....... simple bone fractures (as opposed to horrendous multiple breaks) often heal much quicker.

Torn ligaments can come away from the bone, and strained ligaments stretch and never seem to hold the joint in place as effectively as before damage. Very painful and easy to damage again; real "war wound" material that frequently never feels quite right, especially if you play on it again too soon.
  • Tore my ACL at 16 playing ice hockey. Was back playingg football in six months - ankles can often be worse than knees. Feel for the lad - he was starting to come good and benefitting from a long run in the team. He's never going to be quick, but he's a Charlton lad, and lack of pace never stopped Steve Brown becoming an absolute hero. Hope he recovers fully from it and is fit enough for the club to give him a contract extension in the summer.

This is true. At least with a broken leg bone once you've recovered, you are assured it is unlikely to give way on you, but ligament damage can often reoccur and could plague the rest of his career.
  • The one bit of comfort Basey can take from this injury, is that at least he won't have to worry about losing a yard of pace as a result of it.
  • wish we had eleven grants in the team.

Not sure if thats a serious comment or a dig. Either way poor form sir

  • In fairness to Chris, he does have something of a point. If Basey's main contribution to the team was his pace, that'd be a much bigger concern. But he's pretty good at reading the game and is better with the deadball than most of the team, and those things are unlikely to be affected by this injury. As Leroy say, Steve Brown is a good example of a player who more than made up for his lack of pace in other aspects of his game, and if Grant emulates him, he may not become a top pro, but can earn a good living and become a hero here or somewhere else.
