Been in the Jimmy Seed stand for a home game.

edited February 2010 in General Charlton
When going away and being with our lot, it is always a strange experience when the other team score, there is a strange kind of unmoving silence from us, and a kind of distant 'noise' from the home crowd. When we score a home goal the sound is usually really loud and instant, but I never get that feeling it happens like that for them away when the opposition score (if you get my drift). Anyway has anybody been in a full Jimmy Seed amongst away fans for a home game....if so what does it sound like when/if we score, and are our fans as quiet as opposition fans say?

  • I've been in a few times when Charlton's played Sunderland, they always take a load of fans so it's a real good atmosphere in the JSS...

You can hear the 'Covered End' quite well but the repetoire is usually limited somewhat.....
  • Yeah - went v QPR the year we went up (first time round, I think, though could be wrong) - drew 1-1, with Robbo getting a moody penalty. Very strange atmosphere to say the least - the hoops fans made a lot of noise, it did seem very quiet when we scored - but I think that was to do with the acoustics - the North only had one level back then - and everyone knows the East and West stands are a fookin morgue at the best of times.
  • Last did it last season for Norwich in the cup. About the same experience (as you'd expect) as when we are away.
  • Yes although I had absolutely no intention of doing so. It was when I lived in Germany and I came over to visit for a weekend, we had Bolton at home and I went to the ticket office on the off chance that they had tickets for sale. Low and behold I got a ticket for the JSS, strange thing was it was blue instead of red. Being slightly naive I thought nothing of it and off I toddled around to east stand only to told that my ticket was for away fans. So I spent an uncomfortable two hours, keeping my coat zipped up (I had my Charlton shirt on) and standing up everytime they scored.

Bolton won 1-2 courtesy of two goals from Diouf if memory serves. The Bolton fans we in good voice and excellent humour. The thing I remember is thinking how impressive our stadium looked from the away section. I've been in the JSS with the home fans a few times but for some reason it looks better from that Western corner. It's also one of the few games I've left the ground early from.
  • Jimmy Seed Stand....oh you mean the South Stand..:o)

    No, never sat in there.
  • My first home game v Middlesboro in 82. Didn't know where to go so just sat in the nearest seat...which happened to be with the Boro. Not many of them but they made plenty of noise as they went 3-0 by half-time! It was so bad, I became hooked!
  • South Stand for a Charlton v Sunderland match in 95 I think. Sat there with my mate Tony a die hard Sunderland fan. I think it was 1-0 to Charlton, possibly a David Whyte goal. But it was a bloody awful match, with very little to cheer for anyone. The Sunderland fans were boisterous but the sheer awfulness of the performance led to an ever decreasing atmosphere.

I think I sat in the Jimmy Seed stand when it was used as a mixed home and away end, in the early years of being back at the Valley, against Burnley. Remember Burnley fans going mental, as they always seemed to in those days, because they couldn't get enough pies at half time. The atmosphere was excellent and electric for that match.
  • Earrly/mid nineties against Luton, around New Years day, drew 1-1. Was only about 10, sitting with my brother and his mate. Was a few fights between ours and their fans. Absolutely pooping myself.
  • Southampton a few years ago when we drew 1-1 with a Randolph own goal it was the year they smashed up one of the pubs there was a really negative nasty atmosphere just felt like it was going to go off at anytime.

Would agree that the stadium looks very impressive from the away end. Atmosphere was pretty good, but the acoustics with the low roof of the JSS just makes it sound like the away fans are much noiser.
  • I sat in the Jimmy Seed for the Ipswich play off semi final.

now that was the best atmosphere produced from charlton fans that i've known at a home game

Indeed. There was a tremendous atmosphere that night...
  • Last time I sat in the Jimmy Seed was with my boy back in 2001 I think it was, the classic 3-3 with Man Utd - when Utd had no answer to JJ in the first half hour, Bartlett scored twice on his debut and Johnny Robbo equalised at the death.

United fans the other side of the segregation? .....They were all from Surrey, anyway.

Our chant was, "you only live around the corner".

    Atmosphere was good though.
  • sat in jimmy seed for the 1st game back

I was with the home fans too although only separated from the Ipswich fans by a thin line of stewards and a few empty seats!

I read the question as have you sat in the Jimmy Seed for a game rather than have you sat with the away fans in the Jimmy Seed.
  • I suppose I was looking for the away fans experience of us, and if it is similar to being a Charlton fan away.
  • I was in the Jimmy Seed Stand when we hrashed Southampton 5-0 and were top pf the League

Ah, gotcha. I was on the right hand side of the home fans, practically at the end of the stand. Definitely was a great atmosphere that night.
  • I've sat in there for Charlton V Man City a few seasons back when City didn't take the full allocation. As season tickets weren't sold there the atmosphere was poor. I used to sit in the East stand towards the Jimmy Seed end and the atmosphere in the Jimmy could be quite decent back when 1/3 of it was always home fans.
