10 Own Goals

edited February 2010 in General Charlton
During the commentry on the Villa Utd match last night it was mentioned that Man Utd had benefitted from 10 own goals this season. They also get a lot of pens and frequently seem to grab late winners and equalisers when sometimes they dont deserve it. Although they are an excellent side generally anyway, how many points have they picked up courtesy of these stats? I would imagine enough to make the difference between finishing 6th and winning the league!

This is not luck or by fluke, what you notice with Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal is that they fire an awful lot shots, crosses across the face of goal, not the bog standard looping cross that is easily dealt with. This seems to create all sorts of havoc and confusion in the area and results in own goals, stab ins from 6 yards, handballs and god knows what.

I wonder if other managers take note of this, there must be something in it. If we were drawing 1-1 in the final stages of a game I would like to see this tactic adopted, even if it only came off once or twice until the end of the season it could be the difference between play offs or automatic promotion.

    Good point.

Had never noticed that teams that have more attacks and take more shots get more goals : - )

It probably also helps that they have the best players so are inevitably going to be attacking more.

Agree about the 'standard looping crosses'.

When the likes of Hales and Flanagan were knocking goals in for fun the tactics was with a '4-4-2 formation, got out wide and put low balls into an area between the middle of teh goal and the near post. We never hung a ball up to the far post'. (No substitutue page 76). This was in teh 3rd division too, all we need are a couple of players of teh quality of Killer and Flash and were sorted. Simple.

But at this level we are attracking more, we just seem to create very few goalscoring chances, theres just not enough pressure on the oppo. Its irrelevent that Utd have the best players in the prem. the point is IMO we have the best players in league 1 and rather than not creating chances why not fire in a few more cross shots and see what the result is. That is of course unless your happy to see us fail to beat the likes of Walsall, Tranmere, Orient, Oldham at home. Thats 9 points dropped to start with.

You make your own luck, if you dont try things you get nowehere

Both Youga and Richardson get forward and are both more than capable of doing this and cut out the looping cross.

That's not what the stats say ......... Tranmere at home we had 21 attempts on goal and scored ..... erm, once.
Even away at Walsall, 14 attempts on goal ......and scored only with a penalty.

Am with you on this Choice, low hard early balls into the box can cause a lot of problems at any level and let's face it, we're not playing against the most mobile centre halves in the world these days.

I don't think that's true, we usually create a lot, we just don't have a 'fox in the box' to convert them. If we had Holt or Lambert or Beckford we'd be top.

Franny Jeffers could be available on loan from Sheff Weds ......

Very true but that is hardly a great revelation.

Low hard shoot/cross across the keeper is what we were taught at school and also something defenders are taught to try and cut up by closing down/forcing the winger out wide leaving little option than a floated cross.

Own Goals are a clear output from having the ball in the opposing goal mouth on a regular basis - how many have we had this season ?

I personally think shots from thirty yards shouldnt count as 'goalscoring chances'. Neither should any of Mooney shots from any distance.

I brought up the subject of our pathetic looping floating corners in particular V Hartlepool. Someone said they were good because most of them hit a Charlton head........ Hit a Charlton head, looped back up in the air and the 2nd ball cleared!
Some people really have no idea.

Personally I'm a big fan of the "low & hard". By which I mean it's tried and tested on pro evo.
