Post Match Views and Reaction vs. Swindon

So, an underserved point by all accounts, but a good one all the same it would seem. Leeds got done 3-0 there a couple of weeks ago and Swindon have won their last 6 on the trot at home.

Seeing both Leeds' and Norwich's result it seems another opportunity missed though.

This league could get a lot tighter than we all thought....

  • What you say is right, but we have no conviction about us.

If the supporters don't believe, which most of us dont , then the rest of the season is realistally going to be an uphill battle with us looking over our shoulders rather than ahead.
  • Thought we battled and scrapped really hard against a decent team. Burton made all the differrence when he came on for the last 20 minutes. For the first time we had someone who could hold the ball up and bring other players into the game. We do struggle without him. Excellent goal in the 93rd minute, made with a couple of quick passes and leaving Bailey to knock it in from close range. I thought we thoroughly deserved the point but Swindon will be kicking themselves. They sat far too deep for the last 15 minutes and just invited us on. They obviously didn't learn from their Boxing Day experience!!

You are right. It's got to the stage where t I don't even get angry anymore. They have finally worn me down! So many chances to be well top of this League thrown away. Especially as we have only lost 3 games all season :-)

Not knocking the players by the way. They just seem to have lost their way/belief.
  • Swindon have now dropped 4 points against us in a couple of months, they must be kickingthemselves
  • a fantastic result really.swindon are no mugs in a very tough league and with norwich slipping up we've managed to close the gap on them and leeds are the same as before.

still only 3 defeats all season,we should be celebrating.

you don't do the sarcastic sh1t as well as your bessie mate, so why don't you leave it to him, eh ? or have you agreed to do it in shifts ?
  • We were poor, I could go in a lot more detail but I can't be bothered. Met some lifers and played some good spoof, great day basically

Seriously, please change the record. It is becoming like finger nails down a blackboard.
  • the team selction says it all,the players must be wondering whether they will be in or out next week.Jonjo gets dropped to the stand for 2 games then starts the next, lloyd sam (not that im moaning) goes from start to bench to left out of 16.Chris Solly goes from very good league debut to bench.Burton gets benched, feck me i haven't a clue whats going on and neither do the players. This smacks of pardew 2 years ago.We will miss out on the play offs and ger our arse spanked at Millwall.

  • other than Youga, PP has his complete squad. No one went in the transfer window and he brought in a striker. So we/he cant blame injuries/suspentions or transfers its down to the selection ,the tactics and the manager.

The thought of the Bermondsey pikys or Pardew in the play offs is a horror that only CAFC would put us through.
  • I try to avoid coming on here post match as there are usually too many people on here that ain't been to the match and very rarely go away but think they can post comments as if they have

That performance today was garbage apart from the last five minutes of each half , Swindon were very very strong physically and we struggled to cope with that . Akpo hardly won a header all match and Burton should've been brought on earlier though I guess the enforced withdrawal of Racon meant we had to hang on in case of more injuries .

Need to have a vast improvement to get the three points at Rovers
  • AFKA is that you? Seems a bit out of character 'sall.

Whether I'm Semedo's biggest fan or not, if you play a variation of five in the middle with our personnel it's ludicrous to play without Semedo. Every single central midfielder we have are erratic in their defensive positions or just plain unimposing. I can understand leaving out Semedo for some home matches, though this may prove a false economy the risk of draws instead of wins are something we need to address. 4-5-1 is a cracking away formation with our personnel used correctly.

Its not a cheap snipe, i'm just saying the 'oh how well we are doing, lets be grateful' line laced with triple strength sarcasm is getting boring. Its just about tolerable if one person is doing it, but when its three or four it loses any form of empathy and is just plain boring to read.

I am as frustrated and disappointed as you, and every other fan, but what you are posting of late is not your true feelings, or something that adds to a debate, but a 'stance' that can be expected before it is even posted. Its character posting, which knowing you personally, i know you and oohaah do for a laugh and reaction, but at the end of the day, doesn't help anyone or lead to a decent debate any more.

  • They've just won how many home games on the spin, then draw one to an injury time leveller and their fans boo?

    Not just us then!
  • I love the bit about us dragging them down to our level hahaha f**king liberty
  • awful again lol but stopped Swindon getting three points so an okayish result
  • My take on todyay game ............

We were lucky to go in at half time 0-0 and just weren't at the races - had our first effort at goal after 40 mins which by which time Swindon had creatd a host of chances and were unlucky not to be 2 or 3 up.

Parky changed it at half time bringing on Semedo for Wagstaff (injured or tactical ?) and although made the midfield a bit stronger didn't help us with any attacking play, which again was non-existant.

We only started playing once we had gone 1-0 down (now where have i read THAT statement before !) and Sndon made the big mistake of sitting back for the last 10 mins and inviting us on.........which we did & scored without about our only shot on target.

On another day we would have lost by 3 or 4 and if we cant keep on coming back from going 1-0 down. - I understand today may not have been the game to go 4-4-2 and Swindon are a good team on a good run - but how Parky can say he sent out a team to win is beyond me. This had all the hallmarks of a game plan of keeping it tight and hope to get a draw.

Got to now get 10 points from the next 4 games, anything less and we will be looking over our shoulders as the chasing pack have games in hand and in a month we have Millwall away and I''d hate to go there, lose and they leapfrog over us !

Finally, for those fretting we get Pardews men in the lay-offs............have a look at the table & get real ! They are 12 points off 6th and only 5 points off relegation !!!!!!!!!
  • The pleasing thing about today was that we didn't submit to the stereotypical Charlton defeat. That means losing to a team in good form and with the obvious goalscorers, ie. Paynter and Austin.

However, there is still not a chance we will overtake Norwich or Leeds. That isn't being particularly negative, it's just we aren't good enough. To get automatic promotion we will need 87 points or more. This means winning 10 out of our last 16. No chance.

We will make the playoffs though.

  • play offs would do for me,but i dont think we have enough up front.
  • What I said on Twitter post match

"999! Call the police, day light robbery at Swindon, suspect described as red headed with a load of peoples wives in tow"
  • I went today and have to say for the most part i agree with buckshee

Sometimes dont comment just because i get the impression people listen on radio etc then comment as if they were there and we all know how different the game is when your there. Also like all forums there are lots more people ready to comment after a bad result than a good one.

Anyway, thought we were poor today, Swindon deserved all 3 points, we only seemed to have any real desire to get forward in the last 5 minutes of each half and it takes us to go behind before we start playing. Still a point away to swindon is a good point (sign of the times). Having used two subs early in the second half limited our options and as was mentioned above i think this was the reason burton was not brought on earlier as another injury would have caused problems.

Still, another new ground under my belt and its still all to play for....and its in our hands.

    COYR!!!
  • Just got back home from the match.

Swindon were physical, in your face and fired up pushing us right back in that first 30 mins - sure
they had chances, but apart from the header that clipped the bar and one Robbie turned safely away, it was all pressure and bluster; frenetic scrambled stuff but no cutting edge.

We had to wait far too long though before seeing a thrusting Charlton move. Jonjo interchanged with Reid - which ended with Jonjo crashing the ball against the bar from outside the box. If that had gone in, it would have been talked about for years to come.

The way Swindon played didn't allow us time on the ball, and we were just not bringing the ball down and retaining posession. Players like Bailey, Racon and Jonjo ended up playing ping-pong passing at 90mph, so we often surrendered possession cheaply.

Dare I say it - IMO opinion we missed Sam, somebody to put their foot on the ball or as an outlet when we're under pressure. We really are so much more a better side when we get the ball down and play a passing game rather than trying to match up-and-under teams like Swindon.

The turning point of the game was bringing on Burton - now we had intelligent movement and quality 1st touches that linked up play. He really was the difference and now we were able to retain posession so much better.
And take the game to Swindon.

Don't knock Akpo's sheer graft and willingness to chase lost causes though, he challenged for every high ball isolated from team mates and surrounded by defenders. Great selfless contribution.

Our equaliser was possibly the best move of the match, Akpo chasing and bringing down a high ball, finding Burton who lost his man with a neat turn on the corner of the box - and rolled the most perfect square ball into the path of Bailey, who rammed home with relish.

Great atmosphere amongst the away fans ........ for the last 5 minutes.
    Special mention to the drummer.
  • only Oggy could put a positive spin on that shite !!
  • Maybe you need to take off your "sh*t-tinted specs" once in a while then. Oggy is only saying it how he sees it - which is what you do and what this board is for, surely?

I seriously wonder why you bother going if it makes you that unhappy.

well at least Oggy was there I suppose and qualified to comment. You wouldn't know whether it was shite or not with only a naff commentator to go by.
  • Agree on Burton Oggy, his intelligence and link-up play is fundamental to operating a lone centre forward formation - as we discussed on the way back to Bristol!

Swindon were a lot of huff and puff and not a great deal else, as shown by their three attempts on target during the game (we had more, unbelievably!)

No, that's right - oh wise and insightful one!
    ;o)
  • If anybody thinks our current results are not cause for concern, then obviously they're not seeing what I saw yesterday. We moved to 4-5-1 and didn't play our best centre forward for that role until the last 15 minutes and we spent the majority of the game hoofing it forward to a guy who can't play that role as he's got no touch, awareness of real footballing vision.

Shelvey had what I thought was his worst game for us this season - partly his fault and partly that of the manager - he looked like he'd been dropped into the hole between midfield and attack yet we didn't try and play through him - however, players can have an off day and it was not like the players around him were on fire either. Bailey was poor but he has the knack of being the right man in the right place at the right time. Racon flattered to deceive, Wagstaff didn't get involved, Semedo started well when he came on but then got dragged into the general malaise and Reid got better as the game went on. His shooting is awful but his sheer pace and willingness to beat a man and get the ball in the box is refreshing. Sam deserved a kick up the arse, so I'll give Parky some credit for that.

Shame for Solly who by all accounts had a good game last time out, so he'd have been wondering how Basey was put back in front of him and then watch him be part of a back four who were taken to the cleaners by Paynter in the first 40 minutes. Swindon failed to capitalise but they were by far the better side - organised, playing to their strengths and broke with numbers at pace at will from the start.

It's a point won, rather than lost, but we look like we won't hit the play offs wih form and therefore are going to be the rank outsiders in comparison most likely to the other sides who will be challeging us.

If we're going to play 4-5-1, Burton HAS to be the man to play it - he was head and shoulders better than Apko - who with every game I see him play, appears to be less and less like the solution as a centre forward, so I'd like to see McKenzie given a game from the start - why not - everyboy else has had a good and at least McKenzie HAS scored over 100 league goals in his career ...
