Never even realised..Seen plenty of games v Forest, never remember hearing it nor on TV footage. Ok, iv learnt something there, we are cockerrrney thieves then lol
Forest have sung their limited version of it for a good few years, but it seems to be growing in popularity there. Ours was definitely NOT nicked from Forest or anywhere else (oh alright McCartney might've just got in first).
I played no part whatsoever in its creation as a Charlton song but was there when it took shape. Like many chants it started as something of a joke in small circles before fading into obscurity, only to return years later as a new sense of pride swept the club upon our return to The Valley, Floyd Road. For what it's worth, a few of us tried to keep it afloat during the exile years, but not really with much intention of it being sung as an anthem at games - more as a lament while the ground lay in ruins. With tears in our drunken eyes, we sincerely longed to be there.
One well-known former pitch-side announcer will be able to verify this, and two of the co-writers (who claim no royalties!) are still season-ticket holders and seldom miss a home game. They don't post on here but absolutely did not nick it from Forest.

Interested to hear that, Paddy. My recollection is that it first surfaced away at Highbury in March 1989 just after it had been announced that the directors intended us to return to The Valley. It was already a Forest song by then. But I bow to your superior insider knowledge that we had it on the go long before then.
Cheers Weegie - I wouldn't lead people astray on this one; it's 100% genuine. I couldn't have stated where it resurfaced, but that certainly makes sense. As I mentioned, it was never really sung in any numbers prior to coming home. I'll ask this evening if the "writers" have any further info and report back.
Can't say that Nolly because, like most, I don't know when they first sang it, though I'm sure you have all the dates reliably recorded. What's definitely true is that the guys I mentioned weren't aware of any other club's version. Surely it's not unreasonable to arrive at the conclusion that it might have occurred to supporters of two or more clubs. Won't be losing any sleep over it myself, but thought people might be interested.
Very few chants are original, most come from 70's such as "son of my father" by hicory chick or some other is a very popular tune. Goes for petshop boys "go west" if they could claim rights everytime that tune was used they would be multi multi billionares.

Apart from "Goodbye Horse" that is...I think!

Didn't realise it was Wycombe's got talent.
at what?
I think it was a Forest Song, mist etc coming in from the Trent.
Charlton used it because of the Valley thing and it stuck.
"The writers" penned the second/ third verses.
Deep.
The Forest fans were also singing 'Love Me Do' in the 1950s.
