Saw The Hobbit and Les Mis recently. I enjoyed both immensely.
The Hobbit wasn't over long to me. I enjoyed the beefed up Dwarfs roles and although there were changes from the book, all in all I though for the cinema they worked well.
Les Mis was fantastic. Very powerful and moved me to tears on occasions. My main criticism was the quality of the sound in the Cineworld cinema I watched it in in Northampton - it just wasn't loud enough.
Went to see 'Identity Theif' on Saturday (wasn't my choice). Crushingly average. Not sure if it's in Cinemas in the UK yet, but if it is save your money.
Even the reporter at the Baftas last night said she had to say Lincoln was 'slow for long periods'. Tend to believe that. Cannot forgive Daniel Day Lewis for 'There will be blood'; immensely over hyped film and actor. Maybe he chooses the dullest films he is offered just to draw atention to himself.

I thought his acting in gangs of New York was proper over the top hammy. His accent was like the new yoik ones that reeves and Mortimer do
Just to add my ten pennies worth I agree that "There will be blood" was finely acted but bloody boring to watch. Whilst I admire great performances the main purpose of a movie for me is to entertain me in some way. They needn't be all blood and thunder it can be thought provoking but if it has to entertain. Haven't yet seen Lincoln and am not avid to go but I bet Day Lewis is nailed on for an Oscar. Funnily enough the movie of his I enjoyed the most was "The Last of the Mohicans" which was great.
I don't 'get' There Will Be Blood, and I don't hugely enjoy Gangs Of New York (Diaz and DiCaprio screw it up for me) but both films are hugely impressive pieces, and DDL is absolutely fantastic in both. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find a performance he doesn't deserve huge credit for. His acceptance speech was very funny too.
Flight had the potential to be a great film. Superb first half an hour, followed by a bit of a mess to the end. Denzel was quality but good enough for an oscar nomination? I didn't think so.
The problem for me with Daniel Day Lewis is that his style is "Ooh, look at me acting". It's a style of showy acting that gets good reviews and prizes because it's so obviously 'acting' but it never convinces me. I prefer actors where you can't see the performance, they just ARE the characters.

From that description I think it's safe to say you haven't seen a Daniel day Lewis film. Or at least haven't seen/heard him as himself?
The guy literally does become the character. Didn't he get pneumonia whilst making gangs of New York and actually became an alcoholic for there will be blood. He is THE method actor in film.
Saw a film the other day called '9' - animated film. Fantastic movie, well worth a watch.
great movie. The characters are really well characterised and the personalities are believable.
Yeah, definitely good voice acting - although I thought Jennifer Connelly was actually pretty crap. The other actors gave great performances that were in tune with the (pretty sombre) overall nature of the film. SHe just read it like it was a bloody Pixar feature.

No need to be supercilious. I've seen most of DDL's films. I just don't like his style of acting - that's a question of taste, not a crime. And "method" acting always draws attention to itself and away from the character - in my opinion.
Watched paranormal activity last night. Good up to the last 20mins,then tailed right off. A good horror needs to stay subtle right the way through. This did at the beginning ,but lost its way by the end.
I would recommend Silver Linings Playbook. It can be a delicate subject but the comedy breaks up any heavy moments. A feel good kind of a movie. De Nero, as always, is great.
Just watched Silver Linings Playbook. It starts as a film about mental illness then turns onto a smultzy American feel good movie. Bradley Cooper is totally wrong for the lead role . It's good to see Robert De Niro not stink up the screen as he has done in recent years. 7 out of 10
Killing them softly. Apparently it was a tale of the state of capitalism in America? It disappeared up its own arse at the end. Pretentious codswallop from start to finish.
Cheers for the heads up, wasn't even aware Killing them Softly had been filmed. Based on a novel by George V Higgns, who wrote one of my fave novels of all time that is also an absolutely superb late Mitchum film - The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Poncey or not I'm looking forward to this one.
Saw Cloud Atlas at the Glasgow Film Festival last night. Six intertwined plot lines, characters playing multi-roles across gender and ethnicity (somewhat controversial...) and lots of "life philosophy". I'd recommend it, though - just sit back and enjoy it and it will become clearer towards the end. Seems to split the critics between "brave and brilliant" and "over-elaborate hogwash"!

Yeah I hate it when actors want people to look at them. I want my actors to hide, so I literally cannot see nor hear them.
Just out of interest, do you have any examples of someone you do like to watch? My bet is that they're typecast...
