Your feelings post-Saturday's win

edited January 2010 in General Charlton
Be interested to know the over-riding feelings of those who were at the game on Saturday.

Delighted with an important away win that keeps us on track ?

Or

Fear that we are going to go close but ultimately lack that bit extra that Norwich and Leeds might have ?

I'm split between the two at the moment. I think we have a real chance, there is loads of football left, and it is going to ebb and flow all the way to the end. The fact we are proving so hard to beat is a real bonus and gives us a platform, but i worry we are simply just going to be lacking that bit of attacking quality that the other two seem to have.

Being consistent and winning our home games is the key for me, would guarantee we'd be in the mid-to-high 80 points and allow us to play away from home with a bit less pressure.

  • I agree with all of that.

Any League 1 season before this i think we would be sitting pretty at the top, but it's going to take that bit extra to be in that top 2 come the end.

The top 3 sides have found their place now and i can't see that changing. Just the order, hopefully.

Norwich have to drop points eventually surely, our next run of fixtures are so important in setting up the business end of the season. Can't afford to be drawing games we should be winning now, if we're serious we must do what Norwich have been doing and steam rolling the 'lesser' sides.

Saturday was a very important win against a side who showed they weren't pushovers against our Promo rivals. With Leeds, Norwich & Colchester all to come to the Valley i remain more confident than hopeful still.
  • Happy. Will not really worry about automatic and playoffs until we hit April as there is so much football left to play
  • We've scored more goals than Leeds, and we are getting our first choice back to fitness for the first time in who knows how long.

Richardson/Youga over more to us going forward and defensively so will be big bonuses if they can get fit.

    I'm quietly confident.
  • Having looked at the table Im quite happy with the lay of the land at the moment.But....I also do fear we lack that out and out goalscorer that could see us not only over the line but win this league outright....was hoping the boy Dixon would come good, but somehow I think its not going to happen for the lad.

I'd go along with all that, think we have to win the 3 home games coming up...win all 3 (injury free) and I think we'll have a real chance
  • Agree with afka.

R.e dicko you need the team to play around him. We can't do that as we have too many stronger players
  • we played two slightly different formations on sat and with players coming back have more options.

Remember this is the side that would be out of the play offs by Xmas

Yes, it would be great to have an out and out goal scorer but that can also be a double edged sword. If that person stops scoring what then?

    Bring back 451
  • Wycombe were poor at the valley and I expect them to get relegated but they got a point at Leeds and were let down by poor finishing on Saturday. Norwich also only beat them by one goal. We weren't great on Saturday but it's only January and there's plenty to play for, our draws at Elland Road and Carrow Road may help us.
  • Leeds and Norwich will both have wobbles, we have to make sure we are picking up points.

We need to be more ruthless, sometimes we sit back when we go a goal up and encourage teams on to us.

Agree that the top three at the the end of the season will be the three teams in the current top three.

It will come down to our home games against Norwich and Leeds. Win those we will go up automatically.
  • Its worth remembering that the reason why most of the players are in this league is because they are inconsistent

I personally expect every team to have a wobble at some stage.

  • Considering we have had a makeshift defence for a couple of months now I am happy with where we are.

Admittedly we do conceded a few too many for my liking but I just feel we have the spirit to hold this together.

I think it is a 3 horse race and I do think Leeds might just start to get a little nervy now.

We need 9 points from the next 12 days and I would love us to get a few goals tomorrow to show the other clubs that we are in it for the long haul. Sadly I think Hartlepool will "park the bus" given their tonking on Saturday.

I think Colchester will bounce back but are having a crisis of confidence right now - we need to capitalise on this

I had a "wobble" in my pants looking at that ginger bird in the White Horse on Saturday!!!
  • Colchester have conceded 12 in their two games albeit against a CCC team and an inform Norwich.

Yet they were seen as a real threat only a few weeks ago and still sit only just behind us.

    Long way to go yet.
  • I'd agree with what AFKA has written. On saturday i was happy with the win but at the same time disappointed Norwich hadn't dropped points.
As others have said we simply HAVE to win the next 3 games, and whilst 9 points are vital i'd also say that a lot of goals are crucial too so we can claw back the gap in goal difference on the top 2. Although we'd probably all settle for three 1-0s.

People seem to be talking about our lack of a proven goalscorer but i actually feel it's our defence that needs to improve. Hopefully with Richardson back and Youga not far off this can step us up a bit more. Leeds have the FA cup and the JPT to divide their attention and Norwich are surely due an injury to Hoolahan or Holt.

Our run in worries me, we've got some really tough away games in the last 2 months but if we can be there or thereabouts when Norwich and Leeds come to the Valley then we've got a great chance.

Cant emphasise how important the next 3 games are. If we can get the 9 points on offer then we will have huge momentum going into the Walsall & Swindon games. They will be desperate to beat us after Boxing Days drama.
  • I think the top 3 will probably stay as it is, possibly with Norwich overtaking Leeds. It's easy too look at our next 8 fixtures (see "next 8 games" thread) and see 8 wins out of 8, but then you look at who Norwich and Leeds have got, and other than Huddersfield (and Colchester for Leeds), I can't see them dropping any points either. Aside from the the ex-Prem clubs and MK Dons, Huddersfield and possibly Millwall, the standard in this division is woeful. Swindon are 6th in the table and couldn't even beat us playing with 9 men for an hour!

I reckon we'll keep on churning out results and end up with a cracking points total, but the pessimist in me says we'll just miss out on automatic and end up bottling the play-offs against either Saints or Millwall.

We've got Walsall away before Swindon
  • Disagree about the next three games being vital or key.

Go back and you will see that every sequence of games from the first game onward has been described as "vital","crucial" or similar.

A game is a game. You get three points for winning it. We failed to beat Swindon, Millwall or Brentford which has cost us joint top place but we are still in the fight.

We are at home v Hartlepool tomorrow. We have beaten them away, they lost 5 - 0 at the weekend and we are above them in the league. We should be looking to beat them and I will be very "disappointed" if we don't but it is not "vital"

Was there on Saturday and the mentality of the team is what worries me.

Shelvey and Bailey were excellent but as a team we dont look like we have the mental toughness or confidence that we should have considering our position.

Concerned that if we dont make top two that we would really struggle in the play offs where a lot of it is down to psychology and are effectively cup games.

Glad to see the lads graft out a victory but to be fair they (wycombe) were shocking and could have scored 3 or 4 if they had someone who could finish.

Defence in the first 20 mins seemed very shaky. Also wtf llera was wearing gloves....if i was a manager i would put a player in the reserves for wearing such attire.

True Henry, but now the table is starting to divide itself into smaller battles, the next 3 games are important to win as they are against 'lesser' sides. We need to finish in the top two and to do so, i feel its vital that we pick up points against these type of sides at the business end of the season.

Id make an exception for him!

I disagree about you disagreeing. We have 3 very winnable home games coming up and if we're to put pressure on the top 2 then we need to win them all, hence they are vital.
Yes there are a lot of games to come and a lot of twists and turns ahead but with our run in, winning the next 3 games to me is vital.
  • [cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]A game is a game. You get three points for winning it.

And you can only play one game at a time.

I don't understand this "we've got to win these next 3 games or else" mentality - it just makes for huge expectancy, a nervy crowd and that invites unnecessary pressure on our own team.

Maybe it would be different if we could play 3 games all at once and get 9 points ....... but we can't.
So no point getting ahead of oueselves.

    One game at a time.
  • only to the extent that every game is as vital as any other because each is a potential 3 points.

looking back was Wycombe at home or Orient away vital? At the time they were being presented as "season defining" etc etc.

If we need a point for automatic promotion at Oldham on 8th May then that will be "vital : - )
  • Very important we win each and every game now. Pleased with the result Saturday diddnt think we played as well as we could but 3 points is good.
  • Im sorry but if we cant handle the pressure of being expected to win at home against Hartlepool, Leyton Orient and Tranmere then we dont deserve to go up!
  • [cite]Posted By: ValleyGary[/cite]Im sorry but if we cant handle the pressure of being expected to win at home against Hartlepool, Leyton Orient and Tranmere then we dont deserve to go up!

    spot on
  • Could Leeds not handle the pressure of being expected to beat Exeter or was it just that on the day City were the better team and won?

I thought our "mental toughness" was fine on saturday they levelled but kept getting in positions to worry them.
Basey who has come in for a bit of stick was carrying and injury yet i seem to recall him knocking his bo11ocks out closing down wycombe.

We are not perfect and the reason we are in this league is because of players like sam not being consistant but we have given every team in this league a game this year we do it for the rest of the season and we wont be far off
