Just watched Norwich highlights, handball question

edited January 2010 in General Charlton
Nice goal to win it for Norwich, unimpressed with BBC commentator though, starting his spiel with second placed Norwich chasing Leeds, they were only second placed after they had won the game.

Grant Holts deliberate handball to try and score didnt even get a booking, made me query what the rule was nowadays, Burton got booked for deliberate handball the other week. Both players tried to score with their hands, Is this one of those that is up to the referees judgement still, and the player should at most be booked for unsporting behaviour? (i.e. and attempt at scoring a goal with the hand)

It's a mandatory caution if a player deliberately hits the ball towards goal with his hand, that's why Burton was cautioned and that's why I've cautioned for it on more than one occasion. Not seen the Holt incident but if you describe it then he should have been shown a yellow card.

See below, text lifted from the Laws of Association Football....

    Disciplinary sanctions
There are circumstances when a caution for unsporting behaviour is required
when a player deliberately handles the ball, e.g. when a player:
    • deliberately and blatantly handles the ball to prevent an opponent gaining
    possession
    • attempts to score a goal by deliberately handling the ball
  • I said at the time I felt Deon's second booking was a little harsh - seen a few this season, esp in the Prem, that have resulted in just a talking to. I felt the ref could have had a word with Burton , esp as we were already down to 10 men, and said something along the lines of "last chance, son"

If only Golf, if there's been plenty in the Prem then the refs have not been applying the law probably. Deliberate handball is a caution in the circumstances outlined above and Burton's was a clear caution, second yellow or not, 10 men or not. Just wish the law was consistently applied.

I think the referee applied the rule correctly, to interpret Buton's handball as anything other than deliberate would have been wrong. If Burton had been an opponent and was let off a second yellow under such circumstances I doubt that many here would be sympathetic.

I'm not sure why Holt got let off a caution, that looked a deliberate handball.

    That's the real question.

As Spankie quoted, referees are instructed to caution a player for deliberate handball to prevent an opponent being able to play the ball. So Burton was correctly cautioned for that offence.

The question is simply - why did the referee not caution Holt, as instructed?

Because he didn't play for a Charlton side already down to 10 players!
