Charlton Life Book Club - Launch

edited January 2010 in General Charlton
Following on from the thread on the Pete Davies Book about Italia '90 "All Played Out" would there be any interest in a Charlton Life Book Club?

We'd choose a book every 6 weeks or so (perhaps we could start with "All Played Out") and people could then buy a copy if they don't own it already.

We could then score and discuss it on here from a set date.

Could stick to football related books or spread the net wider to fiction depending on what people decide.

And if people bought the books via the CL Amazon link it would help the site at the same time

Deciding which books could be an issue but if we are willing to let one of the moderators (not me) be the final decision maker on that or have a short list to vote on it should be OK.

Over to you all for comments, suggestions, shouts of support or cries of derision.

  • Fine with me. May be difficult to restrict to football as there are not that many good football books released ... but bearing in mind it is only every couple of months it may work.

To be honest if we open the net wider (to fiction, etc) then there would definitely be problems in agreeing book choice ... perhaps it could include other sports if it takes off.

Ordering via CL link makes sense.
  • i think ill pass, i dont read other then newspapers and this forum but nice idea for those who do
  • football books - not interested.
  • I'd be game, but not for football books. Prefer to watch it rather than read about it.
  • Are there any good football books?
  • Why not nominate half a dozen books and we can vote on it...
  • On a related note, Garry Nelsons book is in the pound shop at Eltham, had half a dozen or so left. Even though I read it years ago, i bought a copy for me boy to read.

Read both of them but would love to get my hands on a copy, sadly unlikely to get to Eltham

All Played Out - Italia 1990 book

Garry Nelson's book is good too

As is Roy Keane's actually ....
  • The is seems to have been "Overwhelmed by indifference and the promise of an early bed".

When CL goes under due to lack of funds remember all the money it could have made from this. Then you'll all be sorry. : - )
  • It's because most of the people on here can't read books, just t'internet - their eyesight to normal print has deteriorated due to too much porn ...
  • Henry isnt there a thread re what books people are reading at the mo` ? thats a sort of "book club" type thingy.

  • Really can't remember reading many good football books, the only ones that I remember beeing any good were Gary Nelson's ones, Among the thugs and the Damned United. All the others have been pretty mediocre.

Of the non football ones, I've just finished reading The Power of the Dog by Don Wimslow, woud highly recommend it as a superior crime thriller for anyone who likes that sort of thing.

I am half way through reading - The Beautiful Game?: Searching the Soul of Football.

Has been quite good so far, loads of stuff that I didn't know about and I am sure many others don't now about too
  • Non football wise i HIGHLY recommend Million Little Pieces by James Frey - Best book read so far

This is a very good book as is the follow-up, My Friend Leonard. However, I think there is a rumpus over whether it is a true story or not.

That is fantastic Godstone. Well done mate. It sounds an interesting story and I will look out for it.

As far as a book club is concerned I would be interested, but as GH said perhaps the 'What book I am reading' thread is as good. I know I have had some very good tips from the "What am I listening to' thread.
