Jem Karacan

I'm sure someone on here has probably mentioned this but, according to tonight's match commentator, the lad's Father owns a Cafe outside the Valley. Looks a decent prospect and makes you wonder how our Kebab eating back room Staff didn't spot this talent right on our doorstep.

"My dad hasn't taught me much Turkish yet. He and my mum own a cafe next to Charlton's stadium, I had a season ticket for a year until they got relegated! I think Alan Curbishley came in a couple of times when he was there."

Yet another one Curbs missed ;-)
  • Maradona couldve been delivered at The Valley and we'd stillve missed him

Curbs fell out with all of them I do believe. In fact, he followed Konchesky to Upton Park only to do it to him again.
  • I think its the cafe down towards the Thames Barrier and not The Valley Cafe, I could be wrong though :(
  • Thats right TCE

    Cafe's and Pub's, my speciality questions! ;)
  • The valley cafe is run by turks though i think.
  • Jem's parents ran the cafe which is on the industrial estate, near the Thames Barrier. Unfortunately, due to rate/rent increases, they stopped trading on Xmas Eve. He was lined up to join us on loan at one stage last season but it fell through. Reading also agreed a fee in excess of 1m for him with Besiktas, which is still on the table, but he rejected it as he knows no-one in Turkey. I will miss parking up outside on a Saturday lunchtime and enjoying a decent fry-up.

  • That's a real shame as it always looked busy enough whenever I run passed it. You have to wonder how much the rent/rates are for what is basically a shack on an industrial back-street in Charlton?

I'm surprised a professional footballer couldn't help them out with the finances?
  • apparently, Greenwich Coucil don't even collect rubbish from the industrial estate plus they were being undercut by mobile cafes who would pull up outside the factories and thereby nick their trade. As for a pro footballer helping them out, I'd sure he would but the Turks are pretty proud and I don't think they would be happy being offered money and certainly wouldn't accept it, and I doubt Jem is on massive wages at Reading either.
  • He went to Colfes for a couple of years before moving to a footballing academy I think
  • I was at school with Jem, he went to Riverston in Lee before joining Reading. Always looked like making the grade and when we were in years 9 onwards he had a fair few trials with various clubs including Man Utd.
