Our Left Side Today

edited December 2009 in General Charlton
Was on of the main reasons why we didn't win the match today. Wagstaff was anonymous the whole time he was on the pitch, He should have been subbed at half time rather than after they took the lead. In the 2nd half Basey was constantly getting beaten for pace and if it wasn't for them failing to take advantage and Semedo covering we would have been punished. He's final ball was terrible today as well, He ruined most of our moves in the 2nd half When Shelvey came on he seemed to play more near the right than the left. I for one can't wait for when Kelly Youga is back so we can attack on both flanks. I think we also need to sign a left winger!

  • Basey had an off day today with his attacking play and set piece delivery, however I would like to see Basey play left mid when Youga is back. This would give the midfield good balance, extra protection to Youga and with our limited finances stop the need for us to bring someone in. The priority has to be to bring a striker in when the window opens.
  • I agree it's a weak area but both their right back and right winger got booked due to our exploits down the left and Bostock, the apparently was-to-be Barcelona bound and Spurs midfielder was taken off for being very very ineffective.

    Well highlighted, WSS.

Maybe today wasn't one to show our left side at its best .... but if Brentford didn't get much change out of them when they were in tandem, and their Boy Wonder couldn't find room to play - then Basey and Waggy must still have been pretty effective in stopping Brentford playing.

This is one of players' roles in a game that many fans either don't see - or don't give credit for it's vital part in a team performance.
  • Can't understand why Holden hasn't had a chance yet. I'm not expecting he'll be the messiah but everytime I've seen Waggy start a game, particularly as a left winger, he's completely failed to make any real impact on the game. He looks to have a role to play as an impact sub, running at tired legs but he's just not ready to be a regular starter yet. I can't really see how Holden is likley to do any worse so why not give him a crack, especially as he's the only specialist left midfielder/winger in our squad? I can only assume he looks well below standard in training.

That said, as soon as as Youga is fit, I'd have Basey pushed into midfield to work in tandem with Kelly. The diamond formation might work for us in some matches but it will make us narrow although in Richardson and Youga we probably have two of the best attacking fullbacks in the division (when fit).
  • I thought after his appearance in JPT Holden might be on the bench occasionally. Was pointed out before Holden has probably had to work on his fitness, going from part time to full time training, but I thought he'd have been useful even if it was just coming on for 20 minutes or so. Looked much more likely to pick out a good pass or cross than Wagstaff, who is more about adding energy and getting into the box.

His loan has basically ended now, as today was the last game before it expires at the end of the month. I'd imagine Parky has probably already made a decision on him, seems unlikely we'll sign him now. We were surely hoping he'd have made more of an impact than 1 sub appearance and 1 assist in the JPT by the time his loan came to an end.

Wagstaff only ever performs well when hes alowed to drift into the centre. Wallsall game at the start of the season, we were playing really well then so he was allowed to drift inside and did so when he scored the goal for us to go 2-0 up. Since that game i havent seen him play all that well.
  • Just to add a bit of balance waggy is 19, homegrown, playing out of position and knows where the goal is.
  • Playing Waggy and Sam in a 4-4-2 doesn't seem to work. My theory is that neither Wagstaff nor Sam and the defensive muscle required when we need to win the ball back, they are too light weight for a four man midfield. Gratnted they are terrific going forward but Waggy's favoured position is on the right, he plays a similar game to Sam in that regard.
  • Once Jonjo came on for Waggy, Basey was left all on his own on the left - tried to get forward, but it didn't always come off. Looked to me that Jonjo gestured to Bailey to go left when he came on, but Bailey ignored the instruction. It is an issue that makes us unbalanced - hope it can be addressed in the window.
