London Away Games and Valley Gold

edited January 2007 in General Charlton
Why do Valley Gold members get slagged off so much when these games come along? Why not just join? It doesn't cost much, you are putting money in youth development and you get a chance to win some money. I know presonally 3 people who have won over the past two years.

  • Not sure if this has ever really been conclusively proven either way, however the support toward the team at out so called Sold out away games is markedly poorer than when we have just a few hundred go away. You'd think it would be better but it is infinately worse, for some reason no-one wants to join in.
  • There is a perception that Valley Golders are in their 80's and buy all the seats for popular away games and it is entirely based on Bolton in the cup a few years ago.

The reality is that a lot of Valley Golders are people like me who go to most away games and just want to make sure we get a ticket in the event of a cup game away to Dartford plus your helping the club financially and have a chance of winning a few quid.

    I joined in 1999 so thats 6 years x £120 = £720.

I won £750 last season and get £15 off my season ticket plus 10% off the club shop so am well up.

Whenever we sell out and there is a rubbish atmos its blamed on the VG's when in reality its because we have rubbish supporters.
  • i know i'm someone regularly involved in this arguement, and perhaps i am a bit quick to suggest that those who filled up norwich away, arsenal away and other 'hard to get to' away games, are vg blanketers.....

however, i can't afford another £120 on top of a season ticket a year. if i did, then i'd be able to go to at least 2 less away games a season, and the only benefit for me is to get a ticket for 1 or 2 games a year that have a high interest, then its not worth it. i feel like i'd be paying £120 for 1 game!

I do agree though that I should stop blaming all of valley gold members for things when southend is right and it is the fact we have rubbish supporters valley gold or not that wanna come out of the woodwork for a 'big game' and sit and look half dead with no passion or enthusiasm for the game. the reason I got bitter was because I couldn't get tickets for gillingham away in the cup a couple of years ago, despite going to half the away games that season, and i had to sit in the "home" end next to the "away" fans. plus, a valley gold member who shall remain nameless, thought it was hilarious to wave his valley gold badge in my face when he found out i didn't get a ticket, so its his fault he's given you all a bad name!!
  • IMHO VG should be fundraising for the club, not for people to get away tickets at the expense of those who go away regularly. I understand the fans' director is supporting a formal scheme to give priority to those do just that. Can you imagine if we were playing Salisbury on Saturday instead of Forest. Our ticket allocation would have been solely VG. Nightmare scenario.
  • nowt wrong with VG members getting tickets IMHO - I used to belong to it but i found our lack of youth players coming through very irritable and opted out
  • Spot on Arf - same here. Was in it fom the start until a couple of years ago. won f all in that time. Now I put the money away for my own youth product - my boy.
  • Perhaps cos its a sell out people can't sit where they like, and hence singers can't sit together, hence poor atmosphere.

Answer: Sell some seats as singing section seats?
