When The Robin Stopped Bobbing: New Charlton Book

edited November 2009 in General Charlton
Over the last few months, I have completed a book, about the demise of Charlton Athletic from the Premiership to League 1. It is written from a fans perspective and I believe gives an honest opinion on how and why we have fallen so dramatically, starting with the departure of Curbs through to June of this year.
The book entitled: When The Robin Stopped Bobbing should be in the shops for early December, including possibly the Charlton Athletic club shop. Anyone interested then there is a facebook group (with further info and a picture) or feel free to message me direct. The book is available to order through authorhouse.co.uk but will soon be available through Amazon and Waterstones. There is also the possibilty that it will begin to be publicised through local media in the near future.
Any feedback/questions/queries or indeed sales would be greatly appreciated!

I am glad someone has written a book about the events we have all witnessed since 2006, handled correctly I am sure it will be essential reading and an antidote to most of the anodine shite that passes for football literature. Something that can get to the heart of what is a very real and interesting story and hopefully a comment on our game in the 21st century, good luck with it.
  • Well done, maybe you could also sell it through the charlton life shop?
  • Thanks for the responses, that is a great idea to sell it through the life shop, does anyone know who to contact about this?

I wonder which section it will be filed under in bookshops, Dan - horror fiction or Greek tragedy ? If the CAFC club shop sells it, they will probably keep it under the counter and smuggle it out in a brown paper wrapping...

Look forward to buying it and well done for writing it. It is a hell of a story and all human life is there - heroism, villainy, ambition, greed, hubris and plenty else besides. It will be fascinating to see who you conclude are the heroes and who are the villains...

Did you get to interview people like Curbs, Dowie, Les Reed and Richard Murray? Or is it simply your take from the terraces?
  • Well done Dan, great achievement.
  • Well done. Is there a surprise ending?
  • Well done Dan, I am sure you will get the critics who will complain about who are you etc..... but providing it has balance, and does not have an 'agenda' I think it should be a good read, I hope you got some people to talk you both on and off the record that know what fans/directors and management think, although I get the feeling you may well get some brickbats..... At least you had the guts to commit yourself to print. Look forward to reading it.....

  • Thanks for the responses, generally so far people have been positive about it and there has not been too much cynism. I would like to say though that there is no agenda with this book, I am a student who would love to write professionally. I am a real fan and have written this purely as an interest. The book is simply written from the terraces and is balanced (even about Dowie). I'm sure it won't be to everyones taste and not everyone will agree with my views but I feel as though our story is as interesting and as dramatic as any (there are book on Leeds demise and I'm sure there will be on Newcastle if they don't go back up). I have some Charlton fan friends who I have consulted throughout writing so I hope it is as representative as possible of our views.
Also I know I am not the oldest of fans (20) and may be met with "who is he" comments but I genuinely believe my views are valid, interesting and representative.
  • In the light of that info, Dan, I am even more impressed and intrigued to read the book.

Absolutely brimful of admiration for your youthful enterprise !

More power to you and I hope it's the start of a long and succesful writing career...cracking title, too, btw...
  • Also I will enquire about selling it in the Charlton Life shop, I know the price on the authorhouse website is steep so I am trying to get this reduced. Also if it is sold in either the life or club shop, it will be available for less!
  • Why not sell it online, so then you don't have the costs of printing and posting etc?
Best of luck and i look forward to reading it.

Will it have an 'Introduction by Jonathan Acworth' to attract would be buyers? : )
  • Just because you are 20 doesn't make your opinion any less valid than someone who is 80. By the time I was 20 I was an incurable Charlton Addick(t) and up to that point I had devoured anything and everything that had any connection with Charlton (still do) and considered myself more than able to converse on the subject with my elders! Best of luck with the book and I look forward to reading it.
  • Look forward to reading it - well done you for doing it. Perhaps "From Liverpool to Hartlepool" would have been a catchier sub title?
  • According to the picture, underneath the main title its says Charltons Journey from Old Trafford to Oldham.

    that didnt work.
  • "Yeah I know..." That's why I suggested it as a catchier sub title B.

You don't sit in the East Stand opposite the players tunnel by any chance do you? Or maybe you just look a bit like him.
  • No i sit in the east block b, so nearer to the Jimmy Seed than players tunnel! Liverpool to Hartlepool is a good sub title aswell, had a lot of ideas for it! I read some ideas on here i think a very long time ago, think one was from Tony Adams to Adams Park!
  • 'sportsdirect.com@StJames'Park' to St James' Park doesn't quite have the right flow does it?
  • ' Top flight to bombsite' and a picture of the priestfield would have been good.

    here here...nice one
  • Just occurred to me - the Liverpool to Hartlepool guarantees a mention from Mr. Stelling on Soccer Saturday...
  • I would not want to offend him, especially after his Middlesbrough rant and the fact I have read his book and I really enjoyed reading it!
  • could have called it "from big dosh to total tosh"
