Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere... Turner was sold for only 4 million quid?
Hull City's problems worsen as Premier League investigates Michael Turner transfer
The crisis engulfing Hull City deepened on Saturday night as Phil Brown's side slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Burnley and the Premier League confirmed that they were investigating the sale of former captain Michael Turner to Sunderland.
Their investigation has been prompted by two of the centre-back's previous clubs, Brentford and Charlton, alleging they had lost almost £1 million in sell-on fees.
While the fee was undisclosed at the time of the transfer in August, Paul Duffen, Hull's outgoing chairman, told the clubs that the deal was valued at only £4 million.
But Hull are reported to have turned down offers of £6 million for the 25 year-old, and estimates on the size of the deal are as high as £12m.
Adam Pearson, Hull's new chairman, would not speak to journalists last night after the game at Turf Moor that had been billed as manager Phil Brown's last chance to save his job.
The Premier League are examining the discrepancy over Turner's move, which also has implications in terms of VAT and transfer levies. It is a further blow for Hull after the club was exposed as having serious financial problems.
Auditors have warned that they would be around £23 million in debt if they were relegated, a growing prospect after the Burnley result.

Think the guy is a real prospect, in these days of mega million pound players, this guy stands out, with a great attitude and talk about the one that got away!.....
Another bad management decision there I am afraid.
haha luv it. Yea hes good but dont really feel sorry for Hull never liked brown.
yawn
I expect you knew at the time he'd come good. Maybe you should be manager!
Let's not forget whats 'is name - a real star in the making he was
We reduced the wage bill on a guy who was hardly on a fortune. To rush out and spend the money on preciously who!......another lot of loanees, another chancer, another JFH.
Appreciate when you have to trim the wage bill, it is not easy and yes Turner was a prospect.
Obviously Charlton seem to think they have a case, hence the investigation.... or do you know about his contract..... thanks for the endorsement, next time we need a manager I will use you as a reference maybe!
He wanted to leave and wouldn't sign a new contract. Would have left on a free if we hadn't of sold him, was good management to put sell-on clause and then carry it over when he went to Hull.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
ken...hindsight is a wonderful thing...no one apart from Mr and Mrs Turner and maybe Michael himself thought he was going to go on and do so well.
Remember at that time we had some very decent players around and it's often the case with Prem clubs that they let youngsters go that go on to do well elsewhere.....did you kick up a hue and cry when he left us.........Mmmmm, I thought not.
In August 2004, Turner joined Brentford on an initial one-month loan, which was later extended to two, then three, months. At the end of his loan spell, in November 2004, Brentford signed Turner permanently, on a two-and-a-half year contract, for an undisclosed fee.[2] He was highly rated at Griffin Park, being voted Players' Player of the Year in the 2004–05 season and Supporters' Player of the Year in the 2005–06 season.[3]
[edit]
First signing Parky made when at Hull.... you guessed it so someone thought he had a future.
If his record at Charlton was so poor, and unrecognised seems bizzare ..... where is the man management in that!
He wouldn't have got a look in...he knew that and so did we....hence he wanted away...logical if you ask me.
He wasn't the only one who was allowed to leave but I can't think of any others that went on to make a significant name for themselves elsewhere....sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.
Yeah....like the rest of us I'm pissed off that he went elsewhere and came good but I don't blame the mangerial staff for letting him go....if you see what I mean.
.........
So we sent him from a Premiership team to a team in tier three when we were a decent mid-table Prem team. Who would you have dropped to play Turner? In hindsight we should have topped his wages up, sent him on a couple of season length loans and then recalled him or sold him, but we can't do that with every player. At least we had a sell-on clause in his contract.
What is the point in having an academy then! to train and bring on players for other teams......... I thought that was West Hams job!
Of course he wanted away, in the same way that a few lads in the side today will if they do not get a crack, you only have to look at Chris D to see that happening.( no I do not think he is as good as he thinks he is)
Totally agree with the rest of the post Sound, BUT the guy was the club captain of the reserves, and I understand rated highly, not the least by our present manager! Time will tell about Turner...... just admire his football that's all.......
That is the trouble with getting on sound .... 'hindsight' is the only sight some of us have..... when you have a closed mind!
Isn't it about time the FAand the Football league made 'undisclosed' transfer fees illegal? More transparacy would help prevent this kind of problem.
1. He wasn't good enough to play for us at the time, he wasn't up to the Premier League at 20/21 years of age.
2. We had better and much more experienced centre backs.
3. He was 20/21, by then players need to leave and play regularly, they can't sit around in the reserves/go out on loan forever. Sam and Sankofa hung on for a bit longer, but they're both now in League One.
4. He's only as good as he is now because he was able to leave, build up experience, play over 100 games in League One and then the Championship. Something he'd have never got with us.
5. We were comfortable as a mid table Prem club at the time, often trying to push for Europe. We couldn't risk that by throwing in young players. Turner wasn't a 'wonderkid' who was ready for Prem football at a young age, he needed time to become the player he is now and the Premier League wasn't the place he was ever going to do that.
Same reason letting Danny Shittu go wasn't a mistake. Perhaps Jon Fortune would have become a better player than he is now if he was one we let go and he played regular football in League One and the Championship?
They are only un-disclosed to other clubs & fans, the two clubs involved & FA Premier Leage/Football league know the exact price. There are sometimes very good reasons why the fee is not disclosed to all & sundry.
I don't know for sure but I think that 'undisclosed' fees come about when the money goes straight to the player and not the selling club. It's confidential because it's related to their salary, and employees salaries are supposed to be confidential. I wonder if Hull owed Turner some kind of performance bonus for keeping them in the Prem, and that was included in the amount? - Or the accountants have made it seem that way, so it could still be a fiddle. Makes a mockery of having a 'sell-on' clause if clubs can just agree a nominal figure, hide the real amount and then split the difference from what they'd owe the nursery club.
A Club that is struggling financially may not want all & sundry to know they sold their best player for well under the odds.
Also a buying club may not want everyone knowing they are flush & paid over the odds for a player, as then whenever they try to buy anyone else other clubs are aware of what they overspent on that previous player.
I am surprised it does not happen more often, the only real benefit of revealing a fee by the buying club is to show its own fans their ambition as a club by showing how much they have spent on a single player.
Beyond that, it's none of anybody's business other than the clubs involved.
If the figures that Hull and Sunderland gave to the FA don't tally with the figures that were given to Charlton then the FA need to deal with it. Let's face it the transfer fees that appear in the media are often guesswork: do they include agents fees, signing on fees, salary? Who knows. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends what outlet you're looking at.
Curiouser and curiouser.
is it the case that Brentford get paid the sell-on fee and then pay our portion onto us. If so maybe we have queried with them the amount we received, and hence the fee too, and they in turn have raised the issue with the authorities.
Not sure but that sounds likely. It's on the Sky website but doesn't really tell us much more.
Good question to ask Peter Varney at Bromley Addicks on Tuesday 10th.
